So since no one has said anything. The joke is that the mom in the game sends you letters with presents attached from time to time. The bit of dark humor is that the kid playing mistakes them for messages from his late mother. It would be pretty funny if it hadn't already been posted a dozen and a half times.

ok no, I haven't even played animal crossing and this is wrong, as is the original post title. It's not about AC bringing them together, since the mother keeps playing it and the kids stop. It's not dark humour about the kid thinking the messages are from his mom, she really did send him all those letters in game while she was still alive, he just never checked them until a year after she died. It's extremely sad and I'm crying now.

Anyone who's played this game knows that the in-game mom messages match exactly with the supposed messages from his real mom. Exactly.

  1. It's not a joke.
  2. It's not dark humor.
  3. The messages aren't thought of as "holy shit, mail from my dead mother". It's the son jumping onto the game after a long time and finding out that a lot of the time his mother spent, in the past, was probably on getting him gifts/letters/etc.
  4. Again... it's not funny... seriously? It's a reminder that we should spend more time with our loved ones.

No, what he's saying is that the presents sent from "mom" are actually from the in-game mom, not his real one.. So he mistakenly thinks his mother was getting him gifts all that time when she wasn't.

Of course, that might be wrong, and it could just be how you say. Really need the actual creator of it to say, I suppose.

Even if it is fake, it's still a good message and I cried a little, too. My dad died from an accident in the home in December 2008, and there are so many things that I wish I could say to him. I've changed a lot since then, and I just wish that he were here so I'd know if I've changed for the better. I agree that it cheapens the video by not being authentic, but I still like the message.

I'm talking about the part at the end that actually says to cherish your parents while you still have the chance. Everything else I said was just how I felt about that message. It actually does say that at the end and it's right, it's really important to value the people we have while we still have them. My dad was only 46 when he died. You never know when someone might be gone from your life.

I've been on reddit for over a year and come daily and often see image that people complain it's a repost and I have never seen. I'm pretty sure on each repost, there are more new person who see this gem for the first time than person who already saw hit. We just don't hear them complain : HEY FUCK U, I NEVER SAW THIS GET OUT.

This feel so much like youtube. Going on video/link they don't like just to complain about something dumb instead of looking at the real content.

I don't know who pissed in your Cheerios, but way to fly off the handle.

Here's my deal with reposts:
Reddit is an aggregation engine. Theoretically, I can be supplied with new content. It's not a "best-of" mill. It's not a bookmarking service. It's for aggregating new content. That's what it was when I started browsing it and it's still reasonably good at that.

Reposts are completely counter to news aggregation. They kill the system. The worst of it are the cynical attempts to reap karma from re-posting popular material. People on reddit long enough have seen the same few things pop up again and again. It's almost cyclical how periodically some items are reposted. Sometimes, reposts are merely the offspring of a news item being posted many times by many people. In this case, spreading out the votes and views across many posts reduces the actual discussion and may prevent an otherwise noteworthy post from making a front page.

I don't browse reddit so that you can be entertained by the best-of the web. I browse reddit for new content. Just because it's "new to you" doesn't make it "new to reddit." That's why I downvote reposts.

I personnaly like how it is, a mix of original content and original shit you found on the internet. Often I don't really care who made what I'm looking, I just care that it's nice and I can see it.

I don't care if something is repposted 6 months/1 year later from someone different who just stumbled upon it and found it amazing but when i see someone taking the post of someone else and repost it to a different subreddit for karma, I totally lose my shit.

Anyway, I guess we don't see reddit exactly the same way. I'm also more of a lurker and would only post original content of mine so you won't have any problem with me on the repost side.

Don't: Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has.

Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.

If 100 people had seen this before, but it was new to 900 people, than it deserves to be up voted appropriately. In a subreddit as big as /r/gaming we should had a massive amount of people who have yet to see this image.

I disagree with that idea that if a majority of people haven't seen something, then it's worth bringing up again. I see merit in preserving and re-introducing quality content but I believe that anyone who browses /new for any significant length of time becomes cynical in the process. I have tried to not complain about reposts, but have taken providing additional information where appropriate. On this particular item, I pointed out what I considered a much more readable form for those who had not seen it. I provided an opinion on the relative-newness of a post that I believe as sparked the conversation here (as opposed to in any of the numerous other "repost" comments). In as much as that opinion counts as a complaint and the use of the term "unfortunate", I am culpable.

In a very brief search, I found 8 instances of this comic being reposted in various forms. That does not count the few instances where I could not verify that it was the same comic due to link rot. It also wasn't much of an in-depth search. Now seeing those links, I realize that none were posted in /r/gaming. Perhaps there should be allowances for cross-posting in which this may fall. For that, I understand that perhaps this audience would benefit from seeing this if they had not been previously exposed. Still, I find it unecessary to withhold an opinion.

Perhaps when the laws of my country make sense, marriage will not be bound to the arbitrary misappropriation of theology, rehabilitation will be preferred to imprisonment, and serial reposters will have their mothers insulted during the President's weekly radio address.

I've seen this many times, and it always gets to me. Part of it is due to the fact that before she died, my mom was similarly pretty well homebound, and I always felt guilty that I didn't or couldn't share what excited her. This is pretty much the worst day of the year for me to see this, because she died on February 15th.
