The story this one tells is "somebody edited me in Photoshop - and not very skillfully"

I don't know why people immediately jump to the conclusion that these pictures have been photoshopped. Pixelmator is a perfectly fine tool for manipulating images and it's way less expensive.

First time I tried the GIMP I ended up seemingly controlling space based telescopes and changing settings on alien spaceships.

Seriously, the number of windows and 'things' completely overwhelmed me. This was about 5 years ago, have any improvements been made to the windows gui?

Just like the term "google" is used as a verb which means to "search for something".

Not to mention the logic of it is terribly flawed too. So he waited until the baby was months (if not a year) old to hit her for it obviously not being his? And whose idea was it to go take a family photo? Her's while she has a black eye? Or his with a baby that everyone knows isn't his? Nothing adds up, even is this was an immaculate Photoshop job.

All that being said, I could look past the flaws if it was at least funny. No luck there either.

I dislike American brand feminism quite severely, but I don't agree with being a misogynist either.

[–]AdrianBrony 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always liked post-feminism better. Basically it's still pushing for equal rights, but it is disagreeing with the implication of it being inherently weak or wrong with being feminine. Essentially, a post feminist is equally okay if a girl genuinely wants to be feminine as it would be if a girl wants to be more masculine, so long as that is what the person actually wants, instead of what they are expected to be. and it holds the belief that neither kind is any weaker than the other.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what I'd call real feminism. It's normal for women to want to be able to act how they want. I've met some awesome hyper tomboys in the middle east who do regular martial arts and love British football. But in their society it is frowned upon.

Here is what I meant by American brand feminism :)

[–]coreyander 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Feminism has a long history in the U.S. and American feminist thought is hardly monolithic. It seems rather unfair to announce that you don't like "American brand" feminism, when you really mean that you don't like how some people "use feminism as an excuse" for unspecified shitty behavior.

Beyond that, I don't understand your distinction between places that "need" feminism and those that don't. Feminism is an ideology stating men and women are equals; I would say that we need that ideology everywhere, even when it isn't actively under attack.

Personally though, I call myself a humanist to avoid any complications.

I called myself a humanist as a teenager because I felt that 'feminist' made it sound like I was a female supremacist or something. This was before I had read any feminist theory or realized that equality for men and women was the underlying premise of feminism. However, I learned that the term "humanist" is already taken; that is, the term already means something else and that using it to mean what I wanted it to mean was just confusing.

Eventually I realized that it was more complicated to call myself a humanist than to use the term that already existed to connote someone who believes that men and women are equals: feminist.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if you noted that I define the term "American Brand Feminism" as power abusing feministic behaviour.

Normal feminism is something entirely different.

As for the rest, I just dislike the term "Feminism", it has major connotations of female bias. That's just a personal thing though.

[–]coreyander 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I saw your definition. It is defining it as you did that I find unfair. To say that you dislike "American brand feminism" when you actually dislike power-abuse in the name of feminism is misleading and unrepresentative of actual American feminism. which has a long and diverse history. If you don't like it when people use feminism as cover for a certain type of behavior, then just say that instead of saying that you don't like American feminism.

As for the rest, I just dislike the term "Feminism", it has major connotations of female bias. That's just a personal thing though.

Yes, and I was just trying to explain that I used to describe myself as a "humanist" for the same reason until I learned that 1) "humanist" actually means something different (so it is confusing to outsiders who know what humanism is) and 2) "feminist" only has a negative connotation to people who don't really understand what the word means within feminist thought or who oppose gender equality.

YMMV, but I would rather educate people about what feminist thought actually entails (that is, not female-supremacy) than attempt to appropriate another term that already has a well-established meaning.

[–]witty_account_name 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would I be correct in assuming that you mean the radical activist feminism of the 60s and 70s that got a lot of news coverage? This is known as the second wave of feminism and there has been a huge backlash against it. It gained a lot for women, but the media was able to spin this activism into a picture where anyone who labels themself as a feminist is immediately assumed to believe that all sex is rape, men are evil, they cannot wear girlie clothes, and hate makeup. As a result, many women today are apprehensive to state that their actions and beliefs are feminist. The mothers of the second wave have been disappointed by the slowdown of feminism, but it still remains strong today. We are in the midst of another wave of feminism (though whether it is the third or fourth is debated) where the word has been rejected, but the actions still occur. Usually through activist organizations as opposed to the guerilla activism of the second wave.

You say that you would call post-feminism "real feminism". The problem with that is that post-feminism is a really broad term that applies to anything happening after the death of the Equal Rights Act (fun fact, it was coined in 1919, a year before women gained the right to vote). I think you have an idea of what you believe feminism should be, but post-feminism is the term that you are looking for because it includes people who still engage in guerilla activism.

[–]AdrianBrony 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the way I see it, I have a problem with people abusing someone weaker than them in general regardless of circumstances. and not just physically weaker. some people are good at manipulating someone stronger than them into a position of weakness or the illusion thereof (most abusive relationships persist because the victim is lead to believe he or she has no other options, usually financially.)

personally I think that it isn't a problem with "american brand feminism" as much as it is just certain people who will look for any excuse. if it wasn't feminism it would be some other reason. From what I have seen there still is a need for feminism here. there's still a pay discrepancy and there is still some fragments of the glass ceiling still.

about the only place I would agree with the whole "mens rights" thing is the occasional instance of bias in custody cases and other legal matters. but that has more to do with the court system than enforced laws and rights.

[–]NoNeedForAName 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Serious question: I'm one of those guys who feels like there are some obvious differences, at least in general (men are stronger, less emotional, etc.; women are more nurturing and open). I also feel like there's no reason to think that one gender is inferior to the other.

What does that make me? A realist? A sexist? Some kind of feminist?

[–]incestprincess 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also feel like there's no reason to think that one gender is inferior to the other.

No seriously. You're a rarity, especially on the interbutts.

[–]TwirlySocrates 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Part of the problem is that people have started fighting about what "feminism" means. Some of them are crazy, some of them are reasonable and are supporting a just cause.

Most reasonable people who stand under the "feminist" banner are striving for equal social status, they recognize that there's physiological differences between sexes, and that it's hard to untangle these differences from culturally constructed differences. They also recognize that (in spite of our laws) our society still harbours unfair attitudes towards both sexes. For example, the vast majority of films that we've been producing fail the bechdel test.

You sound like a feminist to me, but don't let me label you.

[–]IwantYourDollar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The term "less emotional" isn't nearly definitive enough. For example, if we just look at anger, I feel men would be, at the very least, "as emotional."

[–]AdrianBrony 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it depends if you think in trends or definitions. physiologically, there is a trend for a difference in physique, but conscious effort can override that sort of trend and as a result, physiological differences of physique is not enough to disqualify anyone.

IIRC, the emotiveness in men, and the nurturing, open nature of women, is a more cultural thing than physiological. there might be some physiological roots to them, but in this case it is far more nurture than nature, and it serves anyone well to recognize what things are inherent and which things are learned.

if you think in trends that can be overridden, you're just informed. if you think that means it is a blanket statement that cannot or should not be overridden, that is wrong.

Terry met Alice at a church mixer. He wasn't an avid church goer but his Grandmother who took him in after the death of his parents was. She told him to get out there, meet people his own age. Have fun. Stop worrying about her all the time and start worrying about himself.

So he did. And he met Alice. And they fell in love.

A year after their marriage, still without child they went to see a specialist.

"You're barren." the doctor explained. Alice cried and Terry comforted her in his usual restrained fashion.

So they looked into adopting. Unfortunately with his job as night security and her being an out of work flight mechanic they simply didn't fit the bill. So they explored other options.

As Alice pulled the topee stocking over her slender face Terry began to worry this may have been a bad idea. He thought he could see unwavering determination in her eyes but he was probably imagining it because there's no way he could even see her eyes through the sunglasses. Raybans. A "#3" decal on the neon green frames.

His nerves began to waver a tad as they pulled into the driveway of St. Jude's Mercy. They hadn't thought this through. There would be cops in there. Walking in with women's leg garments on their faces would get them arrested before they managed to get through the front door.

Alice realized this as well it seems. She pulled the stocking from her head and exclaimed "Hit me."

"W-What?" Terry stammered.

"Hit me in the face, quick." Alice responded urgently.

"Why..why would...why..."

"We need a reason to be in there hit me in the fucking face you faggot ass pussy, you needle dicked grandma fuc..."

It felt good. For Terry at least. He worried for a moment that maybe they didn't have a healthy relationship, maybe he should have played the field more. He got over it as he helped Alice through the door to the elevator, stopping to check the directory on the way.

"Nursery, 9th floor." Alice said as she pressed the button, gingerly dabbing at her tender right eye.

Terry considered the fact that no one had paid them any mind whatsoever and wondered if he had needed to hit her. If anything it was better than the stockings.

The doors opened and they started down the corridors. After what seemed an eternity but was probably not more than about 3 or 4 minutes they found the nursery. They found Able. They had decided on the name beforehand. Terry was sure it was normally spelled Abel but Alice made him spellcheck it on the MS Word and they found it was actually Able.

They had originally intended to choose carefully but there was only one baby there so they just took that one. They loved Able immediately.

They made their way out of the hospital with their stolen Able, Terry noting that this was almost absurdly easy and decided that he was happy they didn't have to leave their baby in that nursery.

"There are crazy people out there." He muttered under his breath as he googled the number for the Sears Photo Center on his cell phone.

A woman, Stacy (living with her husband Jeff), got in the middle of a violent man and her best ladyfriend LaShonda while the two were out power walking. The man stabbed LaShonda and gave Stacy a rock hard hook. LaShonda lost a lot of blood before the paramedics could get there, but her last wish was for little Tyrone to be taken care of by the newly wed couple. This was a photo taken just days after the encounter was a symbol of the newly formed family.

Tyrone did previously not have a present father for obvious reasons.

There's something extremely shady about guys who wear chain necklaces. I can't help but get the feeling that they're all coke and/or meth head alcoholics who get in monthly bar fights, drive mustangs (or some type of sports car) which they drive in a prickish fashion, have centerfold posters on their bedroom walls (of women or marijuana buds), think that 'the Fast and the Furious' movies are worth watching, own some type of 'fighting' dog, wear Oakleys and are former members of the No Fear/Bad Boy Club, whatever the fuck that was.

Bonus points if they have a goatee or one of those thin, white trashy mustaches.

And it all starts with a tacky chain necklace.

[–]WeakChopper 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You and Stephen King are apparently on the same wavelength. I just finished reading Misery for the first time last week and King uses this so much that he eventually just starts calling it "doing the Donkey" whenever Paul laughs like this.

[–]buckX 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bizarre, considering there's a word that's for describing exactly that, namely braying.

[–]WeakChopper 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

King thinks he's extremely clever. He got the idea for "the Donkey" from the fact that it's called braying, I'm sure, and then was just so thrilled to bits by his own cleverness that he had to repeat it 500 times in ten pages.

King has a lot of good idea, but I have a unique experience reading his books. Usually when I read I get lost in the plot and never even consider the writer, but with King's books there's always a part of me that is constantly imagining him, hunched over his typewriter, just rolling around in his own high opinion of himself.
