I was about to rage. SO HARD. Then I remembered: "Oh wait, I'm not surprised by any of this" Then I decided to rant.

Reality is that most black people that I've seen in high schools (not blacks as a whole, just ones I have experienced personally) have little idea about what King did, or even any parts of his speech. They don't know why he died, or what impact it had on the nation. They don't know that he was a peaceful man, who would have never wanted compensation for the past, and wanted equality, not the constant self-degrading manner at which people hold themselves. He wouldn't have wanted the "being racist while still making the other person look racist" routine, he would have wanted everyone to be civil, have a good education, and see each other without skintone.

Instead we have a black culture where people beat each other up and alienate each other based on how light or dark their skin is. True story, my ex had almost no friends in school because of how light her skin was.

I'm white, care nothing about slavery or the history of it, and I know more about Martin Luther King and care more about him than most of these people who pretend to know or care about slavery.

True story, my ex had almost no friends in school because of how light her skin was.

That's funny because usually it's the opposite. Dark skinned women, especially those without "good hair," are shunned. My mom said that her father used to call her "blackola" and received none of the benefits her light-skinned sister got.

Now, if your ex is a guy, then it fits a bit better. Light skinned guys are usually thought to be "soft" and sensitive, which brings a lot of bullying.

So while I agree with your thoughts on how black people perceive color, I don't think your notions about their knowledge of MLK are right. Like mocotazo, I went to a series of nearly completely black public schools (and now I attend an HBCU), and hardly anyone leaves without having to do quite a bit of research on King specifically.

Narrowed it down if you didn't live in the South (my friends go to Southern and Xavier, mostly). Not Spelman, Grambling or FAMU so I figured Howard. I'll concede that there's generally a difference between who the appearance of women that pledge AKA versus Delta or Zeta, though, School Daze was fairly accurate in that respect. But I've never seen it as a huge thing in the community in general.

This isn't strictly true. Some Black communities, families or social circles consider darker skin more attractive, and may look down on light-skinned African Africans (especially those of mixed race) for their ability to "pass" as white. Also, of course, many black communities couldn't care less about the shade of someone's skin.

The irony of this whole submission is that by the end of the school day, the girl knew who MLK was and what he did. It's just easier to poke fun at a grade school student for not knowing history that she hasn't been taught in school yet.

also, on the idea that MLK didn't want compensation for the past, and just wanted equality:

"Whenever the issue of compensatory treatment for the Negro is raised, some of our friends recoil in horror. The Negro should be granted equality, they agree, but he should ask nothing more. On the surface, this appears reasonable, but it is not realistic." -- 1964, Why We Can't Wait.

most people who say things like, "I know more about MLK and care more about him than blah blah blah" really don't know very much about him at all...

I do not believe it fair to apply this to black people as a whole

Then why use the term "black people" at all?

[–]Xervicx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I said "people" that would have no relevance to the topic, now would it?

I mean take this example. I walk into a group of people talking about how bad fast food restaurants can be. I say "a lot of fast food places in my area are just dirty" and you, of course, would assume that I meant ALL fast food places are dirty. When I would deny it, you would mention "Well why use the term 'fast food' at all?" If I were to follow your advice, there would be no point in my talking about restaurants at all, now would there?

You are rather terrible at taking things out of context, because all someone has to do is scan a line or two upwards and they see where you were being an idiot. Either you are trolling, or you are not that intelligent.

[–]wantonballbag -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I said "people" that would have no relevance to the topic

Indeed. It wouldn't have. Your point also has no relevance beyond your own race related bitterness.

I mean take this example...

I'm sure a lot of places in your area are dirty. I doubt it has little to do with the fact that they are fast food restaurants. It's could be because they're setup in a run down area and are run by people that don't care about hygiene, not because they sell fast food. Can you understand that?

I doubt many kids her age have much idea who king was, regardless of the colour of their skin. It's got nothing to do with the fact that she is black.

Here would be the accurate, none racist version of what you said;

Reality is that most people that I've seen in high schools (not people as a whole, just ones I have experienced personally) have little idea about what King did, or even any parts of his speech. They don't know why he died, or what impact it had on the nation. They don't know that he was a peaceful man, who would have never wanted compensation for the past, and wanted equality, not the constant self-degrading manner at which people hold themselves. [–]FappingAsYouReadThis 0 points1 point ago

Your point also has no relevance beyond your own race related bitterness.

His point was that, although you'd imagine a black person in particular to be educated on issues regarding their race, this is not the case. Pointing that out is not "racist", but there are always those who perceive racism in everything...

[–]wantonballbag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you'd imagine a black person in particular to be educated on issues regarding their race

Honestly these days I don't expect your average American to be educated on anything. I also don't expect anyone to be an expert on race related culture due to the colour of their skin.

Assuming you're white, how much do you know about the atrocities of the klu klux klan? And do you know that specifically because you're white? Or just because you had the same education as everybody else?

[–]FappingAsYouReadThis -1 points0 points ago

Honestly these days I don't expect your average American to be educated on anything.

Wow, hatred for "this" generation and a remark calling Americans uneducated, all in one comment? This is /r/circlejerk material for sure.

I also don't expect anyone to be an expert on race related culture due to the colour of their skin.

I don't either. But if widespread racial discrimination happened toward a certain person's race in recent history, it wouldn't be some crazy, far-off thing to assume their parents educated them about it.

Let me put it this way: I'm a musician. My father is a musician. As such, he periodically teaches me things related to music.

So, it wouldn't be far-off to say: That person is black, their parents are black, so perhaps their parents teach about black history.

That person was saying that, in his experience, that's not the case anyway. So quit being so sensitive and saying everything related to race is "racist". People like you throw around that word so much it loses meaning.

[–]Xervicx 0 points1 point ago

First off, again yes that DOES mean that fast food restaurants in MY area specifically are dirty, that was the whole point of my example. And yes, again, that DOES mean that I was not mentioning restaurants as a whole or fast food restaurants as a whole, ONLY mentioning that the specific fast food joints in my area were dirty.

That being said, you clearly missed my point.

If I had said what you just said, that would have been inaccurate. Guess what? I know my area better than you do. In MY AREA, black teenagers that -I- have SEEN are less knowledgeable about slavery or Martin Luther King than most other people of other races that -I- have SEEN.

And, just in case your severe lack of intellect didn't get the point of what I JUST stated yet again... THAT MEANS THAT I DO NOT HAVE THE SAME VIEW FOR BLACK PEOPLE AS A WHOLE, JUST BLACK PEOPLE THAT WERE IN THE AREA THAT I SPECIFICALLY HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO VIEW AND EXPERIENCE FOR MYSELF.

Did you see it that time, you ignorant fool? I'm speaking about personally obtained statistics, not racist ranting or "he said, she said" nonsense. So stop acting like I said anything remotely racist.

I mean geez, if I said "most Hispanic people in my area that I've seen tend to date other Hispanics" that would NOT be racist. It would be me taking note of something that actually exists, not some random racist statements about groups of people.

It seems like a person with your inability to process statements in an intellectual manner would also think that national studies that show different racial groups having different statistics would also be racist. Most presidents have been white. Is that racist towards or against white people or any other race? Of course not, but by your logic, I'm burning the names of every non-white person in America. Unless I hate politics, then I'm destroying respect for every white person in the USA.

TL;DR: You, sir or madam, are an idiot, since you want to attack me for being a racist, when in fact it is you who is seeing racism everywhere in my statements. That, in fact, is more racist than any interpreted racism that could possibly be found in my words.

I'm white

Stop right there, asshole. The whole point of your comment was to point out how much better your privileged white knowledge is than those ignorant black people you know?

Guess what: the educational system in the US is honestly and totally fucked. It gets exponentially worse for minority-rich areas that also magically happen to be lower-income regions. On top of that, high school students are very often hormonal, ADD, miserable, and distracted.

Making some self-important rant, as a white person, about how stupid the black people you know are, who you refer to as "these people," is just gross. Maybe the fact that you're in a privileged position to not care or know about slavery is somehow related to the fact that you've also been given a better education?

Ignorant douchebag.

I went to an 85% black high school. Though I was IB, I sat in on a regular journalism class. The kids in the class cut up the whole time, called the teacher "bitch," and told her to shut the fuck up whenever she tried to restore order. I really don't want to hear how the education system is letting these kids down. Just my experience.

The girl they quoted is 12, and that was before the teacher gave a lesson on MLK. After the class, she might know more about Martin Luther King than you do today. It's not like everyone gets a lesson about MLK from their parents or teachers by the time they're nine, let alone comprehend why he was assassinated.

[–]DookieDemon 1 point2 points ago

I had a pretty good idea of basic history from my early grade school years. I remember watching the "Dream" speech probably in 2nd grade. I also knew that slavery happened a loooong time ago, well before video cameras for one thing.

So I think we have a problem here when someone that's a teenager thinks we had slavery in the last 50 years. This is super basic US history that anyone in that grade level should be able to at least extrapolate based on their experience of simply living in the US.

I think the kicker here is that the person in question is black and one would assume that they would pay more attention to such matters. Or that their parents would try to educate them. I am not suggesting her ignorance is race related, not at all, just that if I were black I would have more of a reason to research and appreciate the man.

I don't see this as being an issue about black kids not being as smart or whatever people are getting riled up about here, but the real issue is that as Americans we really suck at learning/extrapolating. We should not be tolerating this kind of ignorance as normal or we are in deep shit.

If the one fact you know about him is his speech it's best to also know the coolest part. The whole part of the speech we remember "I have a dream", and what followed was improvised on the spot and doesn't match at all what the written speech was. Pretty awesome to be remembered for a kick ass speech you just made up on the spot.

http://www.chronicleonline.com/content/king-sized-enthusiam-mlk-day

Bright and early, Justin Taylor’s sixth-grade class at Crystal River Middle School entered the classroom eager and ready to learn about a man who changed civil rights in America and broke barriers that led to major changes for blacks in this country. Before playing a couple of videos for the children, Taylor attempted to get a feel for what his students already knew about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“He gave a speech about freedom,” one student said. “He started a boycott against the buses,” another one stated. After discussing what they already knew, Taylor asked the class what they wanted to learn.
