Graphic novel version: Chapter VI: The Abyss Gazes Also, page 26 panel 2 "Looked at sky through smoke heavy with human fat and god was not there. The cold, suffocating dark goes on forever, and we are alone. Live our lives, lacking anything better to do. Devise reason later. Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves; go into oblivion. There is nothing else. Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose. This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not god who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It's us. Only us."

Another related quote from Alan Moore:

The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless. - "The Mindscape of Alan Moore" (2003)

This is the version that should've been in the movie. It's my favorite line from the graphic novel and I was disappointed they changed it for the movie. Glad they kept the gist of the quote in the movie.

[–]cyanCrusader 1 point2 points ago

This should really be at the top.

[–]tbrown47 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if I agree with the 'Existence is random' part...

[–]yakushi12345 6 points7 points ago

Take it teleologically, the point is that there is no inherent greater purpose(ie, not everything happens for a moral reason)

[–]glass_canon 2 points3 points ago

Like Manhattan's line about the molecular composition of the human body regardless of being alive or dead. Purpose is subjective to the individual.

[–]STEADy_TOKErX 21 points22 points ago

Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says, “But doctor… I am Pagliacci.” Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

-Rorschach.

Most of the time I feel like I'm Pagliacci.

[–]Hyaku-Shiki 1 point2 points ago

Vesti la giubba, Pagliacci...

[–]FlatTextOnAScreen 0 points1 point ago

For the lazy: that's what the famous crying clown bit from the end of the first act of Pagliacci is called. It means "Put on your costume".

[–]coprolite_hobbyist 32 points33 points ago

It worries me that I identify so much with Rorschach. I am a liberal, democrat atheist.

[–]sincere_spite 19 points20 points ago

No compromise.

[–]AnimusRex 7 points8 points ago

Not even in the face of Armageddon.

[–]rhapso 17 points18 points ago

You see yourself in him, no matter who you are. Is that not the point in a Rorschach pattern?

[–]Blithon 4 points5 points ago

Science damn it, that was deep!

[–]witty_name_here519 4 points5 points ago

Can you tell me what movie Roshrach (hope I spelled it right) is from? Also, what type of movie is he/she in?

[–]coprolite_hobbyist 22 points23 points ago

Really? Rorschach, is first and foremost a character in the graphic novels "Watchmen", movie by the same name. Very right wing and conservative character that is utilized as a plot development point and commentary.

Watchmen is considered revolutionary in terms of graphic novels. Not only does the plot and subject matter delve into previously unplumbed depths of the medium, but in general, it explores themes and topics of the human experience in such a way as to completely revolutionize the way pop culture addresses such things. I don't want to blow it out of proportion, but it really was a big deal.

[–]witty_name_here519 3 points4 points ago

Thanks, man. I'm not a movie person, and I haven't read the Watchmen series, nor have I heard much of it. I tend to stick to Stephen King and Christipher Paolini. I can't read up on Hithens or Richard Dawkins because I have no means of getting books without the Maternal unit flipping (I have no dad, long story) and forcing more religious bigot on me.

[–]coprolite_hobbyist 16 points17 points ago

The adaptation of Watchmen is considered one of the best in the recent slew of comic movies, and it is a really good view. That being said, I would still recommend reading the mini-series before viewing the movie, but even if you don't, there is still a lot to appreciate. Far more than your average fest of violence and super-machismo, it really has something to say about society and philosophy in general.

Sorry if I sound like a photo-typical fanboy, but that is because I am and it is. Also, if you haven't done so already, check out the Sandman series.

[–]Namiriel 1 point2 points ago

I actually prefer the movie to the comic. Dropping the comic book kid, the pirate story and the squid makes for a much better experience. Though I do really enjoy the goofy newspaper clipping stories. Like about Dollar Bill, the superhero who only guards banks, and was killed in a revolving door.

[–]Amunium -1 points0 points ago

Dropping the comic book kid, the pirate story

But those are in the movie... Unless you have some shortened version.

[–]TheEternalNeophyte 1 point2 points ago

There's about three different versions of the movie. A short theatrical cut, the longer directors cut and a third version that cuts the Tales of the Black Freighter into the movie.

Here in NZ the first cut is common, the second is hard to get your hands on and as for the third, my friend has been looking for a copy since the film first came out, so far without success.

[–]odintal 0 points1 point ago

The theatrical version did not feature the shipwrecked pirate story.

[–]witty_name_here519 3 points4 points ago

I'll try. Thanks again, dude. Also, I'm quite alright with fanboys. I'm like that with Nirvana and Foo Fighters. It's like talking, but it's longer and you move your voice up and doen.

[–]coprolite_hobbyist 0 points1 point ago

Fuck. It is like you have peered into my soul and seen me for who I really am. But seriously, I really like Nirvana and have been a consistent fan of the Foo.

[–]witty_name_here519 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah. I hate 99% of music that isn't grunge or dubstep. I'm just glad deadmau5 performed with the REAL musicians tonight.

[–]waggyneer 4 points5 points ago

If you actually played an instrument you would think otherwise.

[–]witty_name_here519 0 points1 point ago

I dabble in the art of guitar. I'm learning jazz theory right now.

[–]jackzander 2 points3 points ago

Christopher Paolini

ಠ_ಠ

We have got to get this bro some goddamn books.

[–]witty_name_here519 0 points1 point ago

You don't like the Inheritence series?

[–]odintal 1 point2 points ago

Can't speak for him but I found it very meh. Doubly so considering how many great books for that age range have come out in the past few years (harry potter series, hunger games, his dark materials).

I recently started reading Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself. Only a few chapters in but I am very entertained with it.

[–]inferno719 0 points1 point ago

I don't know your background, but I'm American and 23 currently and I'd never heard of the Watchmen until i saw a poster for the movie. I've been meaning to take a look at the written work but school is taking up a lot of my time.

[–]ChicagoRunner 0 points1 point ago

Really?

no need for that.

[–]Aldesso 0 points1 point ago

i looked at your comment and could not belive my eyes. 0.0 "Watchmen"BTW

[–]feral_troll 0 points1 point ago

lets just hope you don't explode into a giant bloody ink blot like he did...

[–]MelsEpicWheelTime -4 points-3 points ago

How very unique...

[–]Namiriel 5 points6 points ago

He's not claiming it's unique, just pointing out that he personally is the opposite of a character that he identifies with.

[–]yellownumberfive 11 points12 points ago

"God doesn't make the world this way. We do."

And as bad as the world is, I find that more comforting than believing there is a God and that it is in control, because at least if we're the ones doing it we have the opportunity to make things better - rather than being slaves to the arbitrary whims of a capricious and callous dictator.

Heaven and hell do exist, and we make them for ourselves and our progeny here on earth in the brief time we have before we cease to exist.

[–]inferno719 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. If God is up there, it's pretty apparent he doesn't give much of a fuck about the world below him; or worse, he wants it this way and we can't change it.

[–]lahwran_ -1 points0 points ago

brief time we have

80-ish years is quite a long time, you know.

[–]ihnjury 2 points3 points ago

80 years is a drop in the bucket compared to 13 billion+. I guess it's all relative.

[–]lahwran_ 1 point2 points ago

I suppose that's true. We're extremely small in every way compared to the size of the universe. But it still feels like a long time for us :)

[deleted]

[–]Vinoda 5 points6 points ago

No sir. maybe you could start making things better by not allowing the outside determine the kind of person you want to be.

We must be great ourselves first so that things around us can change for the best, but it starts within.

Is it easier? no, but I enjoy a challenge.

Also we still have centuries, even more time, to continue on, we have not lost or wasted any chance yet.

You're so cursed, in your first world country, on your computer, being too young to buy alcohol. Truly life is a vale of misery.

[–]bac5665 2 points3 points ago

We've improved so insanely much from even 50 years ago. By almost every metric I am aware of, the world is a better place today than any point in history before it, with the possible caveat that this last decade has been a rare regression. But even if this last decade was worse than the one that proceeded it, 2012 is worlds better than 1950, which was better than 1900 which was better than 1703, which was better than 1492, and so on forever.

Humanity is on a seemingly unstoppable positive trend of making the world better. There may be decades or two of regression here and there, but we have always rebounded better than before that regression anyway. Science and medical technology continue to propel our world to unimagined heights. That trend has continued since the start history and there is no reason to suppose that it will not continue.

[–]Notagtipsy -1 points0 points ago

And that's the point when you search the internet for endless cat pictures. Cat pictures always make things better!

[–]Notagtipsy 4 points5 points ago

This is rather relevant to the OP, if not the actual discussion. I'm sure you guys will like it anyway.

[–]tommyfever 0 points1 point ago

Key word is "akin", and key phrase is "come in five different ink blot styles." So they don't move, you probably just randomly get one style.

[–]Girth_of_a_God 1 point2 points ago

Actually there's unmovable black spots around the yes and nose, but around the mouth, chin and cheek area are "gray" (dark when it's cold) spots that morph as you breath.

It seems like quite the fun mask and vision isn't bad.

[–]Notagtipsy 1 point2 points ago*

Yeah, what Girth said. If you click on "Check it out" on the page I linked to, there is a video that displays how the mask works when worn. The inkblots do move around in the areas near your mouth and nose.

Edit: spelling.

[–]tommyfever 0 points1 point ago

Ah, gotcha.

[–]parrotforpresident 4 points5 points ago

Who controls the british crown Who keeps the metric system down... WE DO!

[–]AnimusRex 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could give all my upvotes.

[–]Sik-sik 1 point2 points ago

Rorschach is my favourite character from that movie. Love the guy. Really need to read the comics.

[–]AnimusRex 1 point2 points ago

You really do. He's 10,000 times more awesome in the comics. They took out his best monologue for the movie. I was so disappointed by that, it literally always gives me chills.

[–]kragmoor 1 point2 points ago

as has been said before this quote makes him out to be more of a deist than an atheist

[–]bastardsnow 1 point2 points ago

i think most christians would agree with that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You guys realize Rorshach is supposed to be a sociopath, right? Like, he's not supposed to be a likable character? Anybody?

[–]PullOutBoy 1 point2 points ago

Uhhh this character is a conservative Christian and he's also completely against liberals. Did you people not read the book or watch the movie??

[–]rogueencampment 0 points1 point ago

this makes a great fb cover photo

Saw Watchmen few months ago again. This line really rouse me up so thanks for reminding. One of my favourite quotes from the Watchmen along with line "The media inspires boredom, not waking up one monday morning and butchering your kids. That takes something else, man".

[–]one_of_reddit 0 points1 point ago

The only true conservative hero! he would butcher Today's "Neo-cons" and make short order of the Republican candidates.

[–]ThumpNuts 0 points1 point ago

AMEN.

[–]blackeyblake 0 points1 point ago

What is this from? Sorry for my lack of culture on this one :(

[–]subject69 0 points1 point ago

watchmen was on yesterday xD

Having a positive outlook on things may not do much. But being negative about everything does nothing.

By the way, i didn't want to repost, i've just gotten active in this subreddit recently and haven't seen this before in here

Conservative Christian here - and this is exactly right!

[–]PullOutBoy 1 point2 points ago

What are you doing in our subreddit boy?

[–]Apparatii -1 points0 points ago

I always thought that we were supposed to think Rorschach was insane and unstable in the comics, and the movie elevated him to a stupid action hero badass for no reason in my opinion. Then again what was I expecting from Snyder... all he knows how to do is slow down and speed up action sequences and use too much CGI.
