Why is there a Super Smash Bros background?

Somebody posted the picture the day before Brawl came out, and for whatever reason it's the first result when googling "dawn of the final day". This exact picture has shown up quite a few times on reddit because people don't notice it on certain monitors.

I didn't notice it at first. Then when I got on my PC check the post I noticed. Meh, it was too late at that point. I'd seen everything.

On a side note, they say chemo screws with your taste buds something fierce. Fielding suggestions for a "last meal" before everything tastes metallic.

Drink water & appreciate how pure & tasteless it is. It's been many years & it still doesn't taste like it used to for me. Best of luck to you with your treatment. Reddit is here for you!

I think everyone reacts to it different. My father never mentioned any sort of change like that, but he just couldn't stomach food he use to eat instead. He had a long list of foods that didn't agree with him. So instead he drank a ton of those Boost meal replacement drinks. We would have a prepare-for-the-apocalypse amount in the cabinet. It helped him regain any weight loss from the chemo and some. Besides the first few months you could hardly tell he was sick.

He did go numb in his hands or feet a lot though. Which I suppose is better than what some other people went through.

I can imagine if my dad had chemo and went numb in his hands.

"Hey son, my hands have gone all numb from the chemo." "Oh really?" "Yeah, watch this." SMACK! "Ow dad goddammit!" "See? I barely felt that."

Your sense of taste does come back, it just takes two or three months after you get off the chemo.

Whatever your favorite food is. And then don't eat it at all while you're going through chemo. I ruined a few of my favorite foods for a long time.

Deep-pan stuffed crust pizza with bbq sauce, tandori chicken, tuna, sweetcorn and onion. This I recommend to all :D Good luck for the chemo.

I didn't notice that things tasted metallic... I just couldn't eat certain things afterwards (onions, bologna) and some stuff just tasted different. And like someone said, water doesn't taste... plain anymore. I had to have all my watered filtered or I just couldn't drink it.

[–]DancesWithDownvotes[S] 0 points1 point ago

Did the tastes just change or could you just not stomach them anymore?

[–]purple_rhino 0 points1 point ago

It was more like I couldn't eat them because of the tastes changing. Just makes me gag.

I've been on chemo and prednisone for about a month now. Bitter taste was there for a few days and now it's pretty rare. Once in a while I'll get some weird taste like eating rancid food that lasts a couple of minutes. Other than that, chemo screws with your shit, literally. And remember to drink lots and lots of water, it'll help.

Two years ago I had 6 months straight chemotherapy. I don't remember everything they gave me, but I do remember Cisplatinum.

The doctor told me my case is a rare one though. The cancer I had (and still have, as it turns out to be incurable with current medical treatments) was identified as a mesothelioma of unknown primary origin. Even though it's not lymphoma, the cancer is only in my lymph nodes, without any indication of there being a primary tumor.

It's comparable to the type of cancer somebody gets at ages of 60+ after a life of working with asbestos, even though I can't remember ever even coming into contact with the stuff, AND I was only 25 years old when the cancer was discovered.

Intensive chemotherapy was the only option for me, as the cancer is too spread out for radiation therapy (or so I was told).

I was on a three week cycle. One full week of chemotherapy, two weeks to recover, and then start over again.

My experience?

The first day of therapy was nothing special. I didn't start feeling sick right away. By the second day I started feeling sick, but I could cope. By the third day, I was feeling completely miserable, and puking my guts out, even with an empty stomach there was the constant feeling of having to vomit. This resulted in a painful stomach on top of things. After the week of therapy, I needed about 3-4 days to regain my appetite, and to be able to actually keep down the food I was eating. In the time leading up to the next treatment, I felt ok, not great, provided that I had a good amount of sleep.

After the six months were over, I was a wreck physically. I had no strength left, and had lost considerable weight, due to hardly eating for an entire week every three weeks. My endurance and stamina were almost completely gone. I also required at least 12 hours of sleep a day the first 1-2 months.

Right now, I've regained some if not most of my strength, and am feeling quite healthy, as the cancer inside of me seems to have stabilized. Somebody who doesn't know about my condition can't tell I'm sick. The only thing I personally still notice is that I still require more and more regular sleep then before.

As of the end of my treatment, I'm getting a PET scan every 6 months to evaluate the evolution of the cancer, and I have to visit the hospital every 6 weeks to check up on my port catheter. These are only very minor inconveniences considering.

Some of the things in this post might not be easy to read if you're about to start therapy yourself, but there's no point in making it look better then it is. That being said, there's a huge number of different types of cancer, and everybody reacts differently to the treatment, so all or some of the above might not even apply to you.

If there's any advice I can give you, it's to stay positive, always. Even when you feel you can't handle it anymore and you think you're about to break, you should always have a positive attitude.

At some point during my treatment there were times when I assumed I wouldn't make it to the next year, but strangely enough, even then I never lost any sleep over it. Even coming the the realization that I might not live for much longer, I never gave up hope. I don't know if my positive attitude had any significance medically speaking (I'll leave that to people who are much smarter then me to figure out, or perhaps even philosophers), but it's an absolute fact that it made things much easier for me and the people around me. For me, it was easier coping with the cancer then it was coping with crying family members all around me.

Looking back at this post, man did I type up a huge wall of text. I hope it doesn't get lost and that my experience can help somebody.

Lastly, good luck to you DancesWithDownvotes, may your treatment be short and effective, and may you live a long and happy, cancer-free life.

Chemo has its ups and downs. You will start with a down. You painfully climb up up afterwards. That will be rewarded by getting the next round which will put you down again, deeper than before. This time you knew and feared where you will get, but you are also ready for climbing upwards again.

And then they will come with a third round, and maybe a fourth round, and maybe even more, driving you down deeper every time. But you will go on and on and climb back uphill, because you're fucking awesome and chemo won't keep you down.

worked in a cancer treatment center for 4 years. The taste thing is a pain in the ass, make sure you get your protein in at least. Double mint gum seemed to help make the smells of the chemo more bearable. Good luck to all of you who's either going through it or has a loved one going through it. My dad survived lung ca. He's gone now, but that didn't kill him.

Please make sure that your drugs are in the proper "containers" (aka the large bags they hang on the poles for you). Etoposide should be contained within a non-dehp containing bag and run using non-dehp containing tubing. This was a small issue at the hospital where I work at and was not observed for at least 3 years (that I have been involved in chemo treatments).

Dude, I'm telling you right now to watch the fuck out for mouth sores. I ended up getting a nasty one during my second cycle that kept me from eating pretty much everything except chicken noodle soup for a few days.
Anyway, a 50/50 mixture of liquid maalox and benadryl worked wonders for me. It is pretty much exactly what magic mouthwash(prescribed medicine for chemo mouthsores) is, but better because you can swallow it, it tastes pretty good, and since the stuff is cheap you can use it a million times a day and not have to worry. I got out of chemotherapy five months ago and mouth sores had to easily be my least favorite part about the entire procedure.

Chemo seems to affect people differently. My 78-year-old father in law actually pepped up during the three or four days of his first few rounds of chemo. Never got sick or even nauseated. The last two rounds, he did get pretty weak, but he also had low sodium. Things didn't so much taste bad to him, but they seemed to lack flavor. He developed a taste for spicy food, because he could taste it. We had heard that most chemo patients don't do well with spicy foods.

Cancer and chemo aren't any fun, but people get through it - you can too! Hopefully, people in your life will recognize that you need to be treated like you - not just the cancer patient - that you don't want to ALWAYS be talking about the cancer or treatment. Good luck to you!

[–]Nalvic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Testicular cancer survivor here. Ending my second cycle tomorrow, then a two week break. Hard candies, saltines, and anything with ginger helps the nausea. The first week is always the worst, so when you make it through that it's all downhill from there. Drink as much fluids as you're comfortable with, it flushes the chemo out. Expect weird side effects, it's different for everybody.

I have to read a lot of cancer research for my job, and this study just came out recently. I found it fascinating, and thought I'd share. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=fasting-might-boost-chemo They are learning new information every day. Good luck.

[–]DancesWithDownvotes[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I spent a lot of time doing low/no carb, and I heard that diets that result in higher levels of glucose can be bad since cancer feeds on glucose. Don't ask me where I heard that, or if I believe it. But if that's the case then it might've spread WAY faster had I not been on that kind of diet. Maybe that's why fasting works against cancer? who knows...or boosts chemo, so maybe not the same thing and I wasted lots of typing. ;)

[–]sparearmadillo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting, my first thought after reading this article was "Someone should now do a study looking at the difference between fasting and no-carb eating". I also follow a low carb diet, not really from any specific study I have read per se that I can remember...just from something I have come up with after reading so much cancer research. How did today go?

I'll add my own good wishes for your recovery.

I know what you are feeling. I did radiation treatment, and 3 years of chemo. It wasn't easy, but I always kept the thought in my mind, that each time I had an injection, that these tiny anti-cancer soldiers were spreading through my body, fighting the good fight. Yes, It got tiresome, and occasionally I felt less than hopeful.

But it worked. That was 37 years ago, and I'm still here, and living a good life. It can happen for you too.

For me chemo fucked with my sense of taste something awful. Would constantly have a metallic taste in my mouth. If you have that problem I would suggest finding a mint or small candy that still tastes good and carry a bunch with you.

Chemo blows hard but you can get through it. Just try to think positive but above all when you have a bad day don't just suppress it. Let it out and move on day by day.
