When I hit my mid-twenties, it seemed like every time I got sick I would get a sinus infection. If you have never had one, thank your lucky stars. If you have gotten one, then you know why this is important. It has the be the single most painful experience I've had with getting sick.

However, my doctor gave me a solution which works great:

  1. Buy some 12 or 24 hour Afrin nasal spray.

  2. Blow your nose as much as possible to clear it out

  3. Following the directions, shove the Afrin as far up your nose as you can, and use one HALF the recommended dose - typically one squirt.

  4. Quickly go lay on your bed, on your back, with your head off the side of the bed - upside down. You should be looking at a wall upside down at that point.

  5. Put a hot washcloth on your forehead for 2-3 minutes

  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the second HALF of the recommended dosage.

Apparently the heat opens up your nasal passages to allow the Afrin in. The Afrin, as much as I hate nasal sprays, works like a charm. Usually in less than 15 minutes all pain is gone.

You can thank me tomorrow when your sinus infection is gone.

EDIT: After using Afrin, my nostrils close up, hence the "addiction" you can get to using it. My solution is to stop using it on one nostril for about 2 days, and when it opens on it's own I stop using the Afrin on the other side and it'll open up after about 2 days too.

WARNING: Don't use more than the recommended dose or your nose will run NON STOP.

I need to try this. I get a sinus infection about every other week, and it sucks. So I'm glad to hear others have similar issues, and have found a fix!

If you get one every other week maybe consider seeing a doctor?

I have, and have gotten antibiotics a few times which helps for a few months. But going to the doctor is expensive and I'm always just getting by...

I got them all the time and hence my doctor visit. The odd thing is that after using that Afrin method for a few years (and really only a few, like 2 or three, with maybe 5 sinus infections) I don't seem to get sinus infections any more. YMMV.

No, I'm in VA and my doctor at the time was in CA. But he was just a good general practitioner I had seen for 10 years. I'm sure any doctor can help.

More than likely you've had one sinus infection the whole time. You need to go to an ENT doctor and have them look up there for the source. Most likely you've got a chunk of bacteria or fungus hanging out that keeps growing until your body beats it back down for a few days. Your immune system can't get at the sinuses very well.

[–]myma1313 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As gross as that sounds, I would love to find there is a cause that can be eliminated. I made an appointment to see an ENT doc but didn't have enough money for my $30 copay at the time and canceled it. Now I just have to try and find time to make an appointment when I'm not working. I wish more doctors were available on the weekends! But thanks for the advice, part of the reason I'm putting off going is because I keep just getting antibiotics that never fix the problem for good, and it's expensive... But here's hoping...

[–]Hristix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can also try the neti pot thing in the meantime, that has flushed the infection from some people. People I've known with chronic sinus infections report nearly immediate relief once the source is found and eliminated..so maybe it's worth amateur's night at the local male or female strip club to be able to change your life :P

Seriously, BEWARE! Don't take that warning lightly. You can easily get addicted to the stuff. If you use it for too long your sinuses will need it more and more until you eventually burn them up and nothing works. You'll be far worse off than when you started using it.

Chronic sinusitis sufferer here, who knows.

[–]BIGTIMElesbo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was addicted to Afrin for an entire semester. I have chronic sinusitis and began getting asthma attacks at night. I would panic about falling asleep and not being able to feel like I could freely breath. I waited until the semester was over to allow myself to get fully sick and have terrible nights while kicking it.

[–]Jessie_James 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My solution for this, which may help for you, is to stop using it in both nostrils. Start by clearing one nostril only for a few days, and it should clog up worse (the Afrin does this for whatever reason) and then in a few days it should clear up. Then when it's back to normal, stop using the Afrin all together.

[–]krisbee 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Likewise, though mine started in my early twenties. People don't realize how incredibly painful these can be. I was hit by a car once and it hurt less than a bad sinus infection (though the Vicodin might have been a factor in that).

[–]MushuWithEggroll 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only problem with afrin is that it kills your sinuses in the long run.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for this. I get them all the time as well (damned deviated septum). What has always worked for me is this: When you're in the shower let the hot water spray on your forehead and under your eyes. After about 20 seconds, start blowing. Repeat until there is nothing left. If you do that for a couple of days you should be all cleared out.

[–]Kagenin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are no words to describe how good this feels. It's my #1 remedy for sinus issues. I used to use a nasal wash bottle also, but then I read an article about someone catching a brain parasite from improperly prepared water. Now I'm unreasonably paranoid even though I know boiling the water would kill the parasite.

[–]joeverdrive 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am in my mid-twenties and go through this every time I get a cold. You're right about the Afrin being a miracle, but your head gets addicted to it, to the point where your sinuses close up without it long after your cold is gone. Beware, and don't use any more than you really need. Quit using it as soon as possible.

[–]Jessie_James 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is very true. My solution is to ease off it and use it only on one nostril until the other one clears up on it's own (usually 2 days). Then you can stop all together.

[–]joeverdrive 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

upon consideration, this is a supreme solution. Clear one sinus artifically while the other clears naturally. Then cease dosage.

I've gotten horrible sinus infections my whole life. This actually sounds interesting since you say it makes your nose run. Here is my personal list of tricks/advice.

FYI: I am not a doctor and these are all things that have seemed to work for me over the years. Try not to kill your self with my advice. You'll make me feel bad, and nobody wants that.

1) Your body does a crappy job of handling sinus infections. If you leave it all up to your body you will end up feeling horrible for several days. The midway point is about when you are at your worst with a fever, This is when your body is finally doing something about the infection. Your body is an idiot

2) Your nose is stuffy because it has a large ball of infection in it. See other people around here talk about it. It's super gross but such a relief to see once you expel it out of your nose. Oh you had sinus infections and you never saw it? Well remember how the nose and throat are connected? It's likely that you ate it. I once vomited because I ate my sinus infection on an empty stomach, Good times.

3) Most meds hurt more then help. Your #1 goal is to get the infection out of your nose. The only way you can do this with out a wacky sinus vacuum (My ENT doc actually used one of these. So awesome) is by losing it up with water. I've found that things like sudafed just stop your nose from running so this gives your infection a chance to dry up and dig in more. You may feel better for a little bit but in the long run it makes it last longer. This is why your nose is running in the first place. All that clear liquid snot is your nose trying to push out the infection.

4) WATER WATER WATER. Long hot showers, tea and soup for the steam. Spicy food for making your nose run. Get a humidifier that boils water to make steam and that has no filter for things to grow on it.

5) If you want to go at this with everything you can get a sinus rinse kit. I use this one http://www.amazon.com/Ayr-Saline-Nasal-Rinse-Kit/dp/B002UFUIWS This is REALLY effective but you need to be careful, if you use water that has stuff in it you could give your self a worse sinus infection. Some one died this way recently, I'm sure you can find the story around here. Use water that has been boiled recently (let it cool. DO NOT PUT BOILING WATER IN YOUR NOSE) or recently opened distilled water (If it's been open for a while things might be growing in it.).

6) You can tell it's coming. Nose stuffy? Feeling a little slow? Sore throat from post nasal drip? It might be that time again. use tips 4 and 5 to fight it off before it gets bad. This can be done but you need to see it coming.

7) Don't over do it. Do not blow your nose like crazy or over dose on meds. Chances are it will not help you, you may even hurt your self. Take your time and try to relax even though you are a fever ridden mouth breather with a throbbing headache for a few days.

8) Know your snot. Clear: Your nose is running to get something out. Expect this a LOT early on. Green/Yellow/White: You got some infection out, Now is the time to celebrate. I hope it was big enough to give you some relief. Red: Blood. Green/Yellow/White + Red: This last bit seems to be where the infection was eating the wall of your sinuses, so chances are this is the end of the infection. Keep hydrated to be safe and get the last little bits of it but you should be able to return to your normal life in the next day or two.

EDIT: I no spell good.

I hate the dry back of the throat feeling from Afrin, but I love the "I don't have to blow my nose every 2 seconds" feeling.

I feel like most of the people in this thread never actually had a sinus infection. The highlight isn't the quantity of snot but the unbelievable quantity of pain that you suffer. It feels like your sinuses are filled with an incredibly dense and ever expanding substance that simply does not stop. You will wake up, go about your day until the first twinge of pain hits. At first you think it's a regular headache but it's focused on your mouth/nose area up around the side of your face. It may fade but the next day it comes back worse. And this repeats until you get medical treatment. Ive had two legit sinus infections and it was easily the worst pain ever.

[–]Jessie_James 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's just very painful. It's a massive headache, worse than a migraine (for me at least) that never ends and pain meds don't do anything to help. I hope you never get one!

[–]syriquez 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Blow your nose as much as possible to clear it out

Blowing your nose seems to be worse for impacting your sinuses than clearing them. Study doesn't explicitly say anything about causing infections but I doubt it is an ideal situation.

Edit Friendlier way of making my point.

I can't believe no one mentioned Sinusbuster.

It's capsaicin nasal spray. It is non-addictive and it really works. I love this stuff.

I've found brewing ground ginger into a tea helps a bit. And smelling horseradish. If the stuff doesn't clear your sinuses, nothing will. Thanks though, I'll have to keep that in my arsenal of remedies.

I've done it twice, works well. First time had a cold then sinus infection for like a week. Stuff balls deep in my head. Googled home remedies, etc - came across it. Thought it was dumb. Person after person said it worked. Tried it, hurt worse than anything ever for about 3 mins. But cleared me right up. Second time I did it cleared me up for a good solid 4 hours or so.

I used to use a netipot until my doctor gave me something much better. It's the same saline solution but with a squeeze bottle. Here it is online, I know they sell them at most drug stores

http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?skuId=385631&productId=385631&WT.mc_id=Shopping_Feed_Products_Google_Free_Listing

I use it twice a day and it's been a life saver.

[–]Gadsden 3 points4 points ago*

Yeah. That's actually what I've got. I like that better too.

I came down with a head cold Friday. For the last 3 days now, if I squeeze the bottle, my sinuses are so plugged it just comes out my tear ducts.

[–]Jessie_James 0 points1 point ago

That stuff, if used with tap water and not distilled (or previously boiled) water can cause a bacterial infection in your brain which can kill you. It's incredibly rare, by why risk it?

Source: http://news.yahoo.com/3-die-rare-brain-infection-amoeba-water-001505888.html

[–]drusteeby 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the concern, but to me that seems like a pretty isolated case and that the odds of it happening are astronomical. The bacteria was found in their house, not in the water supply, and the other two cases were from swimming in lakes.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is really the only way to go. Antibiotics don't really reach the infection in sinuses. I had a horrible sinus infection once and used about a half-gallon of salt solution every half hour for a full day and finally, this mouse-sized glob of brown/green gelatinous sludge came out and I was fine after that. Well, after I got over the pure shock of what just came out of my nose.

After you have several sinus infections you start to become giddy with delight when you see the sludge balls. They go from nightmare fuel to signs of coming relief.

[–]PumpValve 0 points1 point ago

I don't have a proper neti pot so I use a squirt-type sports bottle and just squeeze that salty goodness through my face until it squirts out the other end.

Damage? Oh yes, I'm very sure there is.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wonder though. I think the theory of the neti-pot is to have passive flow-by to coax stuff out of your upper sinuses. But there's also something sold, like a water pik, that pulses solution into your nasal cavity. Maybe what you are doing is something like that.

[–]TheMikeMiller 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are really looking for the suction. The stream creates suction in the same way that the right-angle faucet does in your chemistry lab. You don't want any water deep in your sinuses as it will just cause a runny nose and give more medium for the bacteria to grow.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So is there any reason a person shouldn't use some sort of actual suction device on their sinuses. I'm thinking like that thing that sucks the spit out of your mouth at the dentist's office.

[–]TheMikeMiller 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it's gentle suction I think you'd be ok. Your sinuses are connected to your tear ducts, ears, and other places inside your head. I would be worried about collapsing some of these tubes with too much suction. The neti pot also washes away dried mucus which can block these connections.

[–]AnonymousSkull 0 points1 point ago

I've already gone to the second level and use Cirrus. It has some anti-allergy things in it too, to calm the sinuses more. Too bad it's not an over-the-counter product here. Still better than antibiotics though. Also Carmolis.

There are an awful lot of things that ENT surgeons can do to help them. I'm going to go in pretty soon and see what they can do. I think there are several options that could potentially help people like us a whole lot.

If you use a neti pot regularly, you'll be free of sinus infections. I was getting 2-3 in the both spring and winter per year. The minimum is probably a couple times a week, but once a day is optimal. Plus you'll never have boogers again.

Where was this last week when I needed it?

[–]WendyLRogers3 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Assorted things for sinus infection, and why.

1) Start by taking a whopping dose of vitamin D, at least 10,000 IU/day in three doses, for two weeks. Vitamin D is not a true vitamin, but a hormone, and it has multiple actions against pathogens, both bacteria and viruses. (Note: a small number of people are sensitive to amounts over 3,000 IU; and another small number of people do not easily absorb D, so their blood serum remains low.) Supplements get into the blood much faster that sunlight-skin generated D.

2) Use Cold-Eeze lozenges, which contain a proprietary form of zinc that, unlike most zinc supplements, is readily uptaken by the mucous membranes. Zinc inhibits pathogen reproduction. Do not drink any fluids for an hour after a lozenge. 3/day. This earned the the rare FDA statement "shortens duration and severity" of colds.

3) Since flushing your sinuses with salt water is difficult, an alternative is to use spray nasal saline, a lot of it.

4) With much mucous comes GI tract problems, so drink apple juice to help cut the mucous.

5) If taking antibiotics, be on the lookout for an extremely dangerous secondary infection from an antibiotic resistant bacteria like MRSA and Necrotizing fasciitis. If suddenly the infection gets much worse, or shows odd symptoms, get to a doctor immediately.

[–]leavesinspring 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But don't take zinc and antibiotics simultaneously! The zinc can interfere with antibiotics if you take them too close together.

A Korean lady I know taught me this trick. Basically, it's nasal irrigation without using a netipot.

1) Take a coffee mug of tapwater and bring it to body temperature. [microwave it ~ 30 seconds or run the tap until it's warm].

2) Put in about a tablespoon of table salt and mix.

3) Submerge your nose into the mug and "breathe" in the saltwater.

4) Hold the saltwater in your nose for about 10-20 seconds.

5) Blow your nose. I use a towel because tissue tends to break down because of the saltwater.

6) Do 2x/day - in the morning before brushing your teeth and once before bed.

It took me about a week to get used to the strange feeling of rinsing out my nose. I've had many sinus infections over the years. Also allergies. This technique has been a godsend to me.

In regards to Goldenseal - how do you apply it? Nasally through a spray? I will have to try this next time along with my colloidal silver.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You take the goldenseal orally.

[–]kiramonster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm... were you kidding about the colloidal silver? Everything I've read states that it has no proven effects and isn't exactly a safe substance to put into the human body, since we have no need for silver...

I recommend sticking with plants and food medicines. This silver crap sounds like a fad that went bad.

[–]MrsSippy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I wasn't kidding. It's been around for quite a while, and so there's a lot of "research" that can swing both ways depending on when it was done (and by who).

Colloidal silver does actually work, but it needs to be created and administered properly (just like a drug). Early on, people picked up on it's benefits and anyone could sell the stuff (unlike a drug). With people looking to cash in on the fad, a lot of people turned blue or gray because they ingested too much.

Some companies were even misleading people saying that human's can have a natural silver deficiency - which is completely untrue; human's do not need silver as a nutrient. Of course, like anyone who jumps on the "naturalist" bandwagon, they often think that the higher dose of "natural" things is better - not so with silver.

Steven M. BratMan, M.D. says, "Colloidal silver in the proper size particle and within safe parts per million ratios have been effective against many bacterial issues. Unfortunately, more is not necessarily better and some products have too high a ppm and/or too large silver particles...which can lead to potential trouble...

There is no real evidence that such supplements provide any benefit, and they can produce a peculiar and permanent side effect called argyria."

Argyria happens when people take the silver like a supplement - daily and in unnecessary high doses. Fingers turn blue, faces turn gray etc.

So, I wouldn't recommend taking it like a supplement (because no one needs silver). However, when I take it for sinus infections (nasal spray after my neti pot), I believe that it does work to clear any bacteria and I haven't suffered from argyria; afterall, it's just a mist in your nasal passages. :)

Well, TIL. Thanks for the info. Pretty interesting!

[–]kiramonster -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends what form of goldenseal you have available to you. If you have the dried herb (looks like little tiny roots), you can boil it in a tea. You don't need much, and I recommend googling the exact boiling time and prep instructions to be certain. St. Francis makes tinctures that are already made, and I use one for immune support when I feel like something might be coming on... it is called Echinaceal. I like it. It's strong and feel like it works. You just take two dropper-fulls three times daily, with water if you like. It works great.

Also, RAW GARLIC. A clove or two each day will REALLY do good to kill off things trying to invade the body. It is a very strong medicine. I like to chop it up and eat it on bread with olive oil or almond butter. It helps to eat it with something else, so it doesn't burn your stomach.

I'm going to google "colloidal silver" because it's been a while since I read anything about it, and I need a refresher. :)

Wow. Well...if it works and doesn't kill ya, go for it. I don't really care much about what the FDA says about anything, really. Pharmaceuticals kill more people than street drugs do, so I'd rather decide for myself what works and what doesn't. Within reason, of course.

Get one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_irrigation and fill it with this mixture I use for my sinuses that totally works - Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo with antibacterial formula, half-table spoon of regular table salt or to one' own preference (no more than a tablespoon with these small pots), tea-spoon of baking soda (optional; this is my own mix to give a more potent asskicking towards my sinuses), and mix it into warm water. Pour into nose and smell the results! Though it does take getting use to, such as the soap foam and the probable excessive taste of salt, it does work, very cheap, no side-effects, and one can make as many of the remedy as they want, unlike those stupid hydrochloride-whatever nasal spray crap that never works against sinus infection.

I am not jesting or joking about this at all. I use it every time, simply because it works and it's mostly natural which I prefer over these over-the-counter crap. Lastly, you can use a regular drinking 16 oz cup and just pour the mix into it and drain the handful of content down your nasal cavity one at a time, but this takes getting more use to because one might swallow the nasty fliud of salt and mucus down your throat and choke, heheh. Amateurs, go with the nasal pot!
