That egg yolk is so hypnotizing and pretty.

I must object to the scale. If we consider the yolk to be the sun, Jupiter is about the right size, but Earth is just way too fucking big.

To make an apple pie from scratch, one must first crack an egg.

False. I use no egg in my apple pie.

Well in the Finnish creation myths the world did come from an egg laid by a teal. Here is the relevant part:

Quick the maiden moves her shoulders,

Shakes her members in succession,

Shakes the nest from its foundation,

And the eggs fall into ocean,

Dash in pieces on the bottom

Of the deep and boundless waters.

In the sand they do not perish,

Not the pieces in the ocean;

But transformed, in wondrous beauty

All the fragments come together

Forming pieces two in number,

One the upper, one the lower,

Equal to the one, the other.

From one half the egg, the lower,

Grows the nether vault of Terra:

From the upper half remaining,

Grows the upper vault of Heaven;

From the white part come the moonbeams,

From the yellow part the sunshine,

From the motley part the starlight,

From the dark part grows the cloudage;

And the days speed onward swiftly,

Quickly do the years fly over,

From the shining of the new sun

From the lighting of the full moon.

Here is the full text of the first chapter.

I believe there is a hindu theory, that the universe is an egg that is an infinite cycle of expansion and collapse. I didn't look this up before typing it and am insecure about this fact. It was from a random conversation years ago and just popped up now.

Actually, no. It's a pretty well known fact that millions of egg-laying animals existed before any fowls (ancestors of domestic chickens) evolved. Just take dinosaurs for a start. They laid eggs 250mya, long before chickens. If you want to learn more here's an article.

There's a quote, I think I heard it on QI, that's something like "Anyone who still asks 'which came first, the chicken or the egg?' hasn't understood evolution."

[–]Atom_Smasher 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm unashamed to admit that QI was where I first learned that. I also heard this fine joke: The chicken and the egg were in bed after having had sex when one said to the other 'Huh, I guess that answers that old question'.

Am I the only person here who thinks that this is kinda corny?

Looks like something my grandma would send me with the subject "Fw:Fw:Fw:Fw:THE BIRTH OF THE UNIVERSE!" or something.

One egg's lower half transformed
And became the earth below,
And its upper half transmuted
And became the sky above;
From the yolk the sun was made,
Light of day to shine upon us;
From the white the moon was formed,
Light of night to gleam above us;
All the colored brighter bits
Rose to be the stars of heaven
And the darker crumbs changed into
Clouds and cloudlets in the sky.

If you wish to make an omelette from scratch, first you must invent the [solar system].

And they say back then our universe was a coal-black egg, until the god inside burst out and from its shattered shell he made what became the world we know.

This proves it, the egg was definitely there before the chicken.

i agree with everyone, this picture of a cracked egg and planets on the table is completely unrealistic. scale, color, gravity holding everything onto a table? INACCURATE.
