A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

You are so right. I would try to save Donatello until the very end.

I just played this again the other day on my NES. This game was so much bullshit, just trying to play anywhere past this part brought all of the rage and frustration of my 7 year old self again.

I remember finally getting past this stage as a kid, only to be run over by a stupid car-thing in the next area.

i never beat this level and it broke my heart

To this day I can still beat that level. Because TMNT was the first game I got for the Nintendo (I didn't get an NES package deal that came with the gun and Mario Brothers / Duckhunt, I just got the system). I can beat that level without even losing a single turtle.

Of course, I die on the next level, because I considered beating the dam stage to basically be beating the game.

Toads, level 11. Second player is always killed off due to horrible glitch. More proof of torture http://i.imgur.com/euNYW.png

My friend and I tried to beat Battletoads with 2 players for a while in college. We actually had 2 copies of the game, and got to this level on each one just to confirm we didn't have a bad cartridge.

It was so disappointing, we actually called Nintendo (this was around 2003), and they pretty much said "Yeah we know about it. It's just a huge bug and there's nothing you can do."

We stopped playing Battletoads after that, but recently I've read that if you let the 2nd player die, the 1st player can beat the level and the 2nd player can then come back using a continue.

Still, it's insane to me that no one found this bug during testing. It happens right at the beginning of the level. It almost makes me think they didn't bother testing the game with 2 players because it was so difficult no one in their right mind would play it for long.

Took the words out of my mouth. You're exactly correct when you say player 2 must die off, and the only time he or she is able to join back in is a short window during the last level transition. There are five total continues in the game, two for each player and one shared. I've beaten this game with two players using the minimal number of continues. It's probably my most bitter sweet gaming experience ever.

You must have a non retarded friend, consider yourself lucky.

I never ever had a single friend get past the bike level with me.

The only benefit to two player mode is in level two. In the ninja-rope bird-massacre level you can rack up a bunch of extra lives by juggling birds. It's quite easy as one player to get some extra lives on this level, but with two players you can cheat a little. Note that at the beginning of a frame in level two the birds are assigned who they will attack. [Side note: I think the birds are assigned to attack players in alternating fashion relative to the order they enter the screen.] The game will not move to another frame until all the birds in the current frame are dead. Choose the player who is better at juggling to be yellow toad. Next position green toad at the top of the screen his or her priority is to dodge birds, without hitting them. Have yellow toad at the bottom of the screen juggling one bird at a time. It's much easier to juggle this way because the screen is stationary (not moving down). When yellow toad needs another bird to juggle he can take them one at a time from the green toad. The screen will begin to move downward the instant the last bird is hit. If there is a Venus-Fly-Trap enemy on the screen use it to keep the frame stationary! There are a few times where you can use this to your advantage and give green toad (the noob juggler) a chance to get an easy life and good amount of points. Now, you may be asking yourself why do you give yellow toad, the more seasoned toads player all of the lives? Well, as you progress through the game, if you get to ice world (level 4) you can have yellow toad transfer lives to green toad. This video shows the transfer station I speak of. Right away the two players get a checkpoint, head down the series of ramps, and jump on the moving platforms. From the second platform green toad gets the extra life and yellow toad commits suicide, which leads to a wash plus points. Basically you can bulk up green toad and pad his life pool so more progress can be made. The better transfer station is in level 9, right away we see the two players would get a checkpoint, and immediately can transfer lives to each other. Due to the glitch in level 11 my friend and I transfer out all but 2 or 3 of yellow toads lives here. We do this for three reasons. 1. This is the last checkpoint till the end of the level so you're basically guaranteed to finish without losing a life. 2. In level 10 both players can easily avoid death unless you lose the race, in which case only green toad loses a life. 3. Most importantly, at the beginning of level 11 player two is killed and cannot continue so any lives player two has remaining are wasted. I love this game.

Shit I wish I had friends who were better at games when I was a kid and played the crap out of this.

Seriously I would beat the bike level and everyone would complain about just me playing and eventually I'd just give up and we'd reset to go fight more stupid rats in the big flesh tunnel.

I'm currently working towards a CS major with a cert. in Game Dev. So I must admit, my logic has only begun to flourish over the last 4 years. When I played NES games as a kid, from what I remember, I was terrible.

I never got past the bike part in 2player..... :(

[–]desynch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

as a person who has never passed the stage with the bikes, can you explain this bug?

[–]Boomerkuwanger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure thing! Check out the first few seconds of this video. In single player you always get on the first bike, even if you are yellow toad. In two players green toad gets on the first bike, and yellow toad gets on the second bike. However the second bike is out of gas and doesn't start, so the Trippy-Ball instantly kills yellow toad. To pass this level you must have yellow toad die off and choose not to continue. Then green toad must beat the level solo. After green toad beats it, yellow toad has one chance to enter the game, and it's during the transition between level 11 and 12.

ah, thank you for explaining it! i watched that same video the other day (when i first replied to you) but didn't see/know what was up with the beginning of the stage, so i couldn't put two and to together. thanks for clearing it up though.

Do people often ask if you were tortured as a child?

[–]tycho82[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I usually ask them first as a way to get them to ask me so I can bring up TMNT and we can often find a bond. It's kind of a funny little ice breaker. Except to the people who were actually, you know, tortured.

[–]XT9 0 points1 point ago

Now I have to ask if that happens a lot.

Which i doubt. Hopefully.

I loved this game when I was a little kid, but I never got past the second level (pictured).

I guess I just didn't realize how hard it was.
