This reminds me. I went to high school in africa and used to live in the hostel. I had just learnt how to play chess during the holidays and wanted to teach my friends so I carved out all the chess pieces out of soap bars, painted a chess board on an old cardboard paper, and proceeded to teach my friends. I live in a fraternity and this photo makes me so sad. The kids I live with have no sense of how well off we are. Someone broke a perfectly good pool table when they were drunk cause they thought it was funny. The amount of waste and just general ignorance is sick. Gahhhh its frustrating

Many of the comments here are saying that we should get them a pool table. No, we need to get them things like school books and shoes first. $1,000 (approx cost of a cheap pool table) can go a looooong way for people that have next to nothing. Let's start a fund to get things people actually need.

When seeing this, my initial reaction is to feel bad for them and wish that they were more fortunate and had access to the simple modern pleasures that we take for granted. It then dawned on me that these people are probably much happier and more content than most of us and their lack of materialism and obsession with the superfluous is something to be admired.

I don't think there's anything more uplifting than seeing that other less developed places have yet to let go of utilitarianism and still recognize how to actually make things work in the first place. It really seems like they're better off than Americans in that way no matter what.
