It's not really an argument, just an issue of values. I assumed that the person who said "Even worse" was insinuating that the actual meaning was worse than the parody, meaning discrimination based on sexual orientation is worse than discrimination based on race. I feel that it is worse to discriminate based on race than on sexual orientation. Maybe I misunderstood what chimchanga was saying, either way, there wasn't really any kind of argument, sorry if i worded too strongly.

Homosexuals and bisexuals are discriminated when they are open about their sexuality. When people are discriminated based on race, they are immediately discriminated against, with no doing on their part. Both are bad, but there is less control in regards to race.

I don't believe it is genetic...yet. They have found genetic links to lots of things, but no one has scientifically linked homosexuality to certain genes. If it was genetic, then how could it be passed down through genes...? Artificial insemination? That would predispose a child to being gay just because he/she had a gay parent, and I don't think that is the case. In fact, most arguments I have heard say "gay couples should be allowed to have kids too because that doesn't predispose the child to becoming homosexual"
I am not necessarily saying that people choose to be gay, but "gay genes" makes about as much sense to me as calling HIV/AIDS "GRID"
Everyone always wants scientific evidence of a higher power. Why not want scientific evidence of homosexuality NOT being a choice, also?

It doesn't have to be specifically coded in genes for it to be "genetic." People are increasingly finding that gene regulation, epigenetics, has a lot to do with expression. Also, many other factors influence gene expression, including temperature during development, which although not necessarily genetic, has huge influence on how genes are expressed during critical periods, thus making a phenotype pretty much permanent. Because the sex-determination period of human development (and I'm guessing this is where a lot of sexual preference comes in, but I don't know for sure) has been found to be regulated by many more factors than just a couple of genes, it seems like a lot of things could happen en-utero that have permanent effects.

I think it's more like this:
Say you're (for sake of an example), a gay Chinese man. You meet another person and introduce yourself.
If that person was xenophobic, straight off they could be hostile and discriminatory towards you. You don't even have to interact, the moment that person sees you, he/she hates you.
If he/she was homophobic but not xenophobic, you guys strike up a conversation, and say all goes well. You then say you're gay; and only then does that person turns hostile. So that person actually has interacted with you, even very comfortably and naturally, but the revelation of your sexuality immediately discards any good notions about you that person might have had, because now he hates you.
So it's more like the degree of shallowness of the other guy. It also depends on whether you think straight-off hate with no explanation, or hate from one anecdote is worse.
They're really all jerks though.

I would like to provide the disclaimer that I am for gay rights and against bigotry against them, but I really don't see how someone could say that sexuality is entirely genetically based. It's probably more of a mix of genetics/nurture than anything.

I too am slightly confused by people's confusion of any ascribed biological trait as being "genetic". Then again as an identical twin perhaps I'm just more aware of how many traits we both have no real control over and aren't genetic. The human body and mind are the most complex things in the damn world, there are a good few orders of magnitude of complexity between one's genes and who one is, and plenty of room at other levels for factors completely beyond our conscious control.

Right, in both cases it's just hatred over completely benign ascribed attributes. Neither one is inherently morally wrong in any way, and neither is the result of any conscious choice or effort of any individual, so hating any particular race or sexual orientation is pretty ridiculous.

The first line reads

What grants? Perhaps from other churches? If not, and dolled out by a government, would this not be a violation of separation of church & state? What it would boil down to is a government body funding an obviously religious advertisement.
At any rate, I emailed them claiming I was from another church in the region considering similar "outreach" and wanted to know who to contact in order to acquire the grant. If anything comes of it, I'll post it in /r/WTF.

I have a serious question. Please, someone provide an insightful answer.
Knowing what both this and the original say...how is that any different than saying something along the lines of "are you male/female, and don't want to be? Come see us. We can change you surgically to make you who you want to be."
Assuming that being gay is NOT a choice, shouldn't someone then have the choice to not be gay? Is it not the same as a man deciding he wants to be a woman and having elective surgery?

In this particular case I believe it is bad (and not the same) because the Truth Ministry's underlying motivation is that gay is wrong and requires correction, rather than offering people assistance to change from a neutral standpoint (much like a plastic surgeon who offers breast augmentation, but not under the guise that small breasts are a sin, and no one should have them).

I don't really think the breast augmentation argument is valid because it has no ethical issues surrounding it on the scale of LGBT.
What I am getting at is that the LGBT community supports people who want to change their gender and people who want to change peoples' gender, but not a group who offers support for someone going through a similar situation.
I see what you mean about how Truth Ministry comes across, but I think they approached it in the least offensive way they could. They are standing up for their beliefs, good for them. The billboard didn't go out attacking and saying "if you are gay, you need to come see us and change," which is how most people would expect them to write it. They are offering an option for people who don't want to be gay anymore. No one else provides support for that demographic. (at least not on the same national scale)
I do think your question is a good one, and I am completely on the fence on that. I personally don't think the ad is particularly offensive (but I find myself difficult to offend most of the time so I am not the right person to contribute).
The only minor issue is I do have a problem with the Truth Ministry offering this service as there is a huge conflict of interest.
