I don't understand why people keep perpetuating the myth that rabbits die after you bath them. I had my last bunny for 7 years, and I bathed him once in a while because he did get filthy. I do the same now with my new bunny but waited until he's fully grown. He hates it though.

The key is to use warm water. Then towel-drying followed by blow-drying. If you don't blow dry they lose too much body heat due to evaporation and die.

In the last five years that I've owned rabbits, I've found that no matter what you do to/with your bunny, the internet will tell you that you're going to kill it. I once spent an evening in tears, convinced that my rabbit would die because I found a couple of fleas on him.

[–]aco620 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I found out the same thing about reptiles. No matter how you treat them, someone will always tell you you're a horrible person that isn't caring for them adequately. What do you mean your tortoise lives in a specially constructed backyard instead of his own studio apartment!? You only give him basic cable!? Everyone knows tortoises need a healthy stream of HBO AND Showtime to survive! You monster!

I don't blame them really, it's just harder to get concrete facts about exotic pets I suppose.

[–]Thunderjugs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also realized everyone gives you fucked up info. I was given the wrong info several times on my bearded dragon and ended spending a week, over $400 and many exchanges at the store trying to get his habitat right.

[–]Alyssinreality 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the same way with pet hedgehogs. It's torture.

[–]MadeSenseAtTheTime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In defense of the Internet, drowning, suffocating and/or dismembering WILL in fact, kill your rabbit. Sometimes the Internet is correct.

Also, no I do not know this from personal experience...ಠ_ಠ

[–]auntiecoagulant 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Getting damp from the rain while running to hide it their warren is one thing but to be soaked to the skin by being submersed in water is another. Their undercoat is ther to keep them from getting soaked to the skin but in a bath the undercoat gets wet, that's what some of are bitching about. Everyone always thinks they more than their vet and/or other knowledgable people. It's like saying, "Well I beat my dog with a 2x4 several times and he seems alright so it must be OK".

[–]ColPickering 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't disagree. I'm glad that so many people have pointed out that bathing a bunny is dangerous. I do think there's a difference between a very experienced bunny owner who understands the risks and takes precautions and a person who carelessly bathes their bun because they are uninformed or worse, who disregards information from their vet. I wouldn't compare it to beating a dog. Maybe you were being hyperbolic to make a point.

Two questions: Why don't I see dead bunnies everywhere after a rainstorm?
Do bunnies get that stinky that they need to be bathed?

[–]Y0tsuya 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For a while I had 2 male bunnies. They turned gay and liked to hump each other so I had to wash bunny spooge off their backs. This is just one example.

[–]donttouchmyfeet 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. When we had first gotten my bunny, my mom tried to give her a bath (I tried to stop her!) and she almost immediately went into shock. It was an absolutely terrifying hour because I was convinced she was going to die. Thankfully she's now 8 years old and still going strong (:

Rabbits are like cats--they clean themselves. At most, if they're really dirty, wiping them with a damp dish towel is all you really need.

Although a rare bunny may grow up swimming in the family pool and going on camping trips where she paddles around in the lake, the vast majority of rabbits, like their ancestors, do not relish getting wet. Even an occasional bath is quite stressful to the average rabbit, and is not recommended. NEVER--unless your veterinarian advises it to bring down a fever--should you give a sick rabbit a bath. Because seemingly healthy rabbits can have undiagnosed problems, it's best not to subject them to the stress of a bath. If your rabbit is very badly infested with fleas, there's a good chance that he is already compromised and may go into shock when bathed. There are many safe alternatives to flea control (see these under "Fleas," above). Also, a thoroughly wet rabbit takes a very long time to dry, so spot cleaning the dirty area with an application of baby cornstarch (available at any supermarket in the baby section) (do not use talcum, as it is carcinogenic) and then gently combing out the dirt with a fine flea comb is better than a wet bath. A wet rabbit can quickly become hypothermic. If your rabbit is wet to the skin for any reason, be sure to thoroughly blow dry the bunny until even the undercoat is dry and fluffy. Normal rabbit body temperature ranges from 101oF - 103oF. Because rabbit skin is very delicate, and rabbits are sensitive to heat, never use a blow dryer on a setting higher than "warm," and constantly monitor the temperature of the air on the bunny's skin by placing your hand in its path.

I saved a baby rabbit from some hooligans outside my dorm and kept it as a pet. It lived in the backside of the mini fridge huddled up to the compressor for warmth. One night, my roommate decided to give him a bath in the sink. The next day, I came home to Sven having some kind of seizure. I buried him out in the park in a purple felt Crown Royale bag.

[–]fjellfras 1 point2 points ago

[–]ailish 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't get soaked to the skin in the rain. Their undercoat protects them. If they are completely submerged in water, then they are soaked to the skin. And yes, if a wild bunny fell in a lake or something, it would also be at great risk.

[–]kojak488 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

New Neg's Urban Sport: Bunny Lake Kicking. You get a point for every rabbit you kick and bonus points for every body of water it falls in to. Obviously you get more points the closer to the center and further from land the bunny is.

[–]DeoDomuique 1 point2 points ago

[–]chrono735 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're not alone. I have done this with my rabbits when they are cuddling with me. Their heads definitely don't fit, and I don't really close my mouth, but they sure don't seem to mind me trying. They just sit there and and continue grinding their teeth (rabbit version of purring). I think the cute factor of this task is due to experiencing how tiny and vulnerable the animal is, that you could nearly fit it's entire head in your mouth, yet it trusts you completely.

[–]Mr_Pickles_Esq 53 points54 points ago

They are all pretty much like that. My experiences with rabbit bodies are more from a...ahem...culinary perspective (sorry), but they have long slinky bodies. I think it's just the way they hunch over that makes them look fatter, plus the fur.

There is not much meat in the saddle which is why most rabbit dishes use the legs.

Ones that you eat are a bit bigger. I suggest googling around on your own if you are curious as to how much you can get off of one rabbit.

Aren't you not supposed to bathe rabbits?

[–]Offensive_Brute 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can do it but they require intensive drying. You're not supposed to bathe chicks either, but if you keep them warm and blow dry them, they get over it. Its definitely not something to do for ha-has though. Its more like a serious medical procedure for animals that are extremely cold sensitive.

That's because they let the bunny get cold! If its done safely by keeping the little guy warm, there shouldn't be a problem. Mine lived a long life. The OP mentions this above!

i've owned guinea pigs and people say the same "stress" related issues around bathing. In general a guinea pig will try to get out a bath area. But I typically use(d) luke warm water in a bathroom sink and only have enough water to cover the animal up to their paws, eg they stand in a puddle.

I would then use a small cup with luke warm water from the tap to shampoo/clean the critter while the drain slowly drained. In general the first 1-2 times the animal is skiddish but eventually liked the whole process say once a month. Never, ever get water into their ears.

Always closed all the windows from drafts when I was done and bundled them in a (new) towel every 10 minutes to dry them off (typically while holding them on the couch) ... seriously i think they like the attention and zombie/towel/rubbing/warmth of being out of the water ...

Then they smell good (baby shampoo) :D

IF you can raise a baby guinea pig to adult, I've done this numerous times with 0 bad results. Just like teaching a rabbit or piggy to use a litter box -- it's all about getting while their young. And patience on your behalf.

I used to clip my gpig's nails while i laid her on her back ... just gave her a carrot stick or apple slice to munch while i snipped away .... just be gentle and use soothing tones and before you know it the process is done. It's alot easier then trying to clip them while standing/sitting.

No sheep dip.

No flipping them around like a sheep to clip their hooves.

And no yelling, "Hep har!", during either.

Dear God! You are all acting like a little water will kill a rabbit. Jeez. The thing looks extremely confused but not like its in shock. And I really don't think someone would post a picture of their pet right after they killed it. Lets assume that this owner made a mistake and bathed his rabbit or was directed by a vet to do so. Either way this is an adorably upset bunny with a huge looking head. _^

I expect that if you plunged a rabbit into a full tub or a pool it would go into shock. But dribbling some water on your rabbit or letting it get its feet wet will not kill it. I've had pet rabbits that liked to sit out in the rain or under a sprinkler. We had to use a hose to get one of them out from under a porch. This undignified creature in the picture is going to be fine.
