I once found a western fenced lizard when I was out fishing that was partially covered in ticks. I took them all off of him (they were stuck in his armpits, behind his head and jaw and several other places), he looked so emaciated because of them, so I couldn't help but find a bunch of bugs and stuff for him to eat, then made him a little cave under some rocks.

I have an unnatural hatred towards ticks, and it's nothing to do with how they look. They're disease ridden, stealthy, parasitic, cowardly, assholes. 'oh look I'm a tick and I'm gonna suck your blood while you sleep!' so brave Tick attacks are a deep, direct, personal attack on my body and I hate them.

A friends horse got Lyme from deer ticks due to the over population of deer in the area. One night when we went back to the barn after working, over twenty deer were in the horse pen and were jumping and running everywhere. The horse was sick for over a year and now has chronic joint pain from Lyme, really horrible for a now 3 year old horse....

I'm from South Australia, and my parents bought a block of land out in the country, where there are tonnes of Blue tongue skinks(sleep lizards and blue tongues) bearded dragons, iguanas, thorny devils and more. every time I go up there, I wander around at 10 am with a pair of tweezers and and tick every lizard I find making sure I get all of them.

gotta catch the bastards first however. but I am now the proud owner of a baby orange bearded dragon and a young 3 legged thorny devil.

[–]virusporn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Iguanas are not native to Australia. It is illegal to keep wild caught animals without a licence. Thorny devils are incredibly difficult to keep in captivity, they eat hundreds, to thousands of ants a day.

As a snake owner, this picture makes me very unhappy :(

[–]thechickenfoot 127 points128 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a Burmese python that was infested with mites when I bought her. She let me pick them out of her eyes, her mouth, under her scales.... Finally won the battle, but it was tough.

[–]Firewind 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does she remember what you did for her? I'm sure the snake is happier, if they can feel happiness, but does she recognize you as the guy who make her life better?

[–]thechickenfoot 219 points220 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do think she knew what was happening. Because of the mites she had some rough sheds and I would help her. I would hold my hand in a ring and she would wiggle through and come back to me. I'd soak her and she'd put he head up my arm and just go limp and let me work on the pieces only moving the muscles under where I would touch to work with me. Very sweet snake. I was a proud mom to have such a trust with her,

A rat snake I had in college and beyond would wait for me to come home. The few months I lived back at home before finding my own place my mom would observe him. He'd snooze all day, then about 5 minutes before I'd get home from work and walk upstairs to drop off my stuff he would rouse and slither out of his favorite tube and stare at my bed - almost like he was waiting.

They have very distinct personalities. The rat snake was high strung and goofy, the python was chill and calculating. Such beautiful animals!

[–]Firewind 104 points105 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Snakes creep me out, but I don't think animals should suffer needlessly. I'm glad there are people like you to ensure our reptilian friends aren't neglected.

Ah hell, now you've made me miss my old snake. She was a gorgeous ball python, and was very complacent around people. She never minded getting picked up at all.

She was kind of stupid, in an endearing way. She had a habit of climbing up onto a branch in her tank, and falling off. I'd be sitting and reading, and just hear a THUMP.

Best part was then she would get up and do it again.

She died last year though. I miss her :(

E: Wow, thanks for the kind words everyone. Im glad to see reptiles getting some love around here.

How careful do you have to be with a python?

[–]Reaxel 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ball pythons are the sweetest snakes. They can be picky eaters, but they are really safe to handle. I'm no expert, and don't have anything else to add in fear of being wrong.

[–]Cullly 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A few things to note....

  1. If you bring the python up when young, you can "train" it to be docile as hell. If you buy an adult python, you don't know it's temperament.

  2. If you are a beginner snake owner, get one that doesn't grow very big and long. Those are only for people who know what they are doing. The bigger it is, the stronger it is. My 5 foot corn snake would be considered a pretty weak snake, but she was pretty strong and could grip you pretty hard. If she nipped, she could draw blood, but she has never done that. I'm only basing it on similar sized snakes which have nipped me.

Here is a typical young Ball Python Red Tailed Boa I'm holding. This is a young'un (as cwertin says below Boa's grow long and are not good for beginners). Ball Pythons only grow to about 4-5 feet tops. They are one of the best Pythons for a beginner because of temperament, size, and stuff...

I let my corn snake wrap around my neck while I played Starcraft 1. Her name was Momo R.I.P. Here's a picture of her at about 2 months old I think. DINNER TIME.. Wish I could find the pics when she was fully grown.

Anyway.. Snake poop smells really bad. Learn to get rid of it very quick after it poops and be thankful it's only like one poop a week.

I think that the Ball Python you're holding is actually a little baby Redtail Boa, or something similar :)

Redtail Boa Ball Python

Redtails are beautiful, but not quite as docile as ball pythons. They also get pretty big - 7-10ft on average.

My first snake was a ball python that I got for a gift. My sister got her from Petsmart. She had mites from day one. I did everything I could but she died only a few days later. Went to Petsmart and found all their snakes had mites and some were dead in the terrariums. Bastards.

My mother in law found a Berber Skink by her porch (We live in New England!) and this poor little creature had puncture wounds along her belly, stiff unmoving limbs, and a broken tail. I wasn't working at the time, so I frequently bathed her, cleaned the wounds, hand fed her waxworms and teeny tiny crickets with a calcium supplement. She also laid there quietly and stared up appreciatively at my face. Her limbs are fully functioning now, although she may never regrow her little claws. You can barely tell she was so drastically injured but for the crooked tail. We named her Thin Lizzy the Broken Lizard. Sorry for the wall of text. I get excited when I find fellow reptile enthusiasts.

this reminds me of my pet ball python. Somewhat of a long story but worth sharing. I had gone browsing through my local mall and of course made a trip to the pet store. I was completely SHOCKED to see a ball python for sale (for $100 no less) that was completely infested with ticks, mites, had scale rot, and a NASTY burn on his head because they didn't cage the heating lamp. I was about a foot and a half long at that point, also very thin. I brought this to the attention of an employee and said i would buy the snake at a discount as long as i got everything else for free (a couple mice, some bedding, a tank, water dish, heating pad) After some negotiation and threats, we finally agreed on it. Now, ticks aren't a HUGE problem to get rid of, however mites and scale rot are. And the burn on his head was so bad that one night as he was trying to shed (which came of in tiny flakes because of is condition) he tore off the scab and his skull was exposed. After two years of nurturing and care he was FINALLY completely healed. This took daily care, everyday, all year long. Now i know they say snakes don't form bonds with people, but damn it, i swear this one did.

As I understand this doesnt happen to snakes that feed on ticks often because of a tighter scale pattern. This one obviously found a taste for ticks and probably shouldnt dive head first into a nest of ticks. Many snakes especially the Pine snake fills 1/3 of their diet with ticks during the summer seasons.

EDIT: Sorry haven't found a background link for the feeding patterns but have witnessed this for myself over several years of surveying with the DNR for multiple things (most commonly frog populations) In the Northern part of Wisconsin.

There are 4 types of Pine Snakes, the one specifically I was pointing towards was the Northern Pine Snake. (The others are : Florida, Black, and Louisiana)

And yes Ticks have nests, (not like bird nests lol) but there can be hundreds in a small area typically no bigger than a softball diameter. Commonly between logs or under loose bark, hence the name "Wood Tick"

This poor snake probably wasn't feeding on them as the other comments stated typically they feed on rodents/spiders/larger bugs, he just happened to stick his head in an unfortunate place.

During my childhood, we went into the forest to watch a family friend cut down a rather large tree. He hit it with an axe once, and it started raining ticks. Not the little ones, the big ones.

They were everywhere. All over us, dozens of them.

This is the best response I could have hoped for.

Bonus: There were so many they got tangled up in the laundry, and we found a whole ton of them in the pantleg of some jeans a few days later.

Did you look in the pants you put on today? I hope your cuffs aren't rolled up.

Ah, that reminds me of when I went canoeing with my mother.

She was really bad at canoeing, and I was like 10, so we kept hitting low lying tree branches on my side. I was really scratched up and crying, then a nest of spiders fell in my lap. I flipped shit and almost knocked the canoe over.

[–]gloomdoom 4 points5 points ago

Um, giant ticks are the result of a tick on a healthy host. That's what makes them 'big' and healthy. If they are on a tree or a plant, they're regular sized ticks. You do not see a tick fatten itself up from a host and then wander off to go perch in a tree.

[–]go_Pre 33 points34 points ago

Yep. Sat in a tick bed once. Pulled 88 of the fuckers off of me. One nestled itself just under my glans... Picture that. You're welcome.

Some link to some proof that pine snakes or any snakes actually feed on ticks?

Certainly with an exact figure like "1/3", you must have a source.....
