The childs shirt is an example of.

a) A dominant gene

b) Co-dominance

c) Incomplete dominance

d) X-linked recessive

[–]gerwalking 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

B

C would probably be diagonal lines.

[–]Cawnen 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's codominance. If it were incomplete dominance the shirt would have stripes that are in between horizontal and vertical, if it were simple dominance it would have either vertical or horizontal stripes but not both, and if it were x-linked recessive it would be hella complicated and depend on the biological sex of the child.

[–]LtMaster1 1 point2 points ago

Ahh, but what if we are looking at a situation of complex genetics?

In that case all of the above could be possible, depending on which genes are involved and how they interact with each other.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I second this as I am ghostly white, as is my siblings, while my mother is quite dark in skin. It comes from the fact we have a 'dark secret' in our family genetic tree. It appears one of my great-greats or great-great-greats decided that the natives of New Zealand where hot (don't blame her). Through twists of genetics, my mother happened to be born with the very same genes that lead to skin pigment as well as the shape of the nose as found in the native population.

Genetics isn't as clean cut as everything being single gene pairs. Hell, a good deal of our traits are what they know as complex genetic causes. This means it isn't a single gene which controls the outcome, but a range of genes and how they interact with each other. All it takes is the right combination and suddenly you

Oh, and before people state that I was switched at birth: I suffer from some genetic conditions that run in her family. Interestingly enough the more female side of her family, but again... genetics be strange. I also have three other siblings, all as white as I am, so it is genetics here my friends.

no this is more like blended inheritance you're not a medium between your parents, more like you get some traits from your father and the other traits from your mother.

[–]monster01020 17 points18 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true with most genes but you can in very few cases have co-dominant alleles such as blood. E.g. AB blood is inherited from an A type father and a B type mother or vice versa.

Edit: I can't believe I didn't notice a comment by a guy who pointed out the exact same point...

[–]gbCerberus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also the outdated idea of blending implied that once you mix the traits, like mixing blue and yellow paint, you can't separate them again (i.e., see them re-emerge in later generations).

Now do one for epigenetics (where changes in gene expression occur during an orgasms life time but are not passed on to the germ line) or

In biology, and specifically genetics, epigenetics is the study of inherited changes in phenotype (appearance) or gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence, hence the name epi- (Greek: επί- over, above) -genetics. ...

[–]shiiiitniggaaa 0 points1 point ago

[–]Pravusmentis 0 points1 point ago

it's more than methylation, but it's more than just what it is too. It's that it's so new in the biological workd and so unknown that makes it so alluring. At least IMO

[–]SuperBlooperYup 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't take into account gene dominance. Obviously the horizontal lines on the man are bolder, signifying dominance. The woman has more vertical lines total, which could also indicate a form of dominance.

  • Line Direction: vertical - lady in background has vertical lines, indicating that vertical must be more dominant in our small test set.
  • Thickness: thicker - man has much thicker lines, while woman in the background has medium thickness lines. The people in the far back have one-color shirts which could indicate really thick lines which eventually merged to make one solid color over the course of several generations.

Hypothesis: The child should gain thick vertical lines, not hashed lines.

Probably woulda been diagonal stripes. Co-dominance.

That would either be codominant trait or blending which is not Mendelian.

by that logic, the kid is a hermaphrodite

[–]LettersFromTheSky 0 points1 point ago

This is pretty clever, although I have to ask - where did the hat for the kid come from? A distant ancestral relative?

This is not how genetics works, genetics is not purely additive. Recombination alone would break this image.

This isn't how genetics works at all! He should have inherited vertical or horizontal stripes, assuming there is one gene with alleles for both. If there are two separate genes for each kind of stripe to be expressed then this is possible, though. In any case it's a bad tie in to Mendelian genetics and essentially lines up with many idea that Mendel disproved. /rant

Unless, codominance.

[–]CatSnuggler 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is actually incomplete dominance, that is, progeny show a new "mixed" phenotype. It would be co-dominance if the child's shirt had areas with vertical stripes and areas with horizontal stripes.

[–]learningphotoshop 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Incomplete dominance would be like diagonal lines. He expresses both traits, although at the same location they are distinct traits. He has both horizontal and vertical stripes, so co-dominance.

Doesn't 3:1 apply to heterozygous parents? If the parents are homozygous dominant for both alleles (AA/BB) and neither expression negates the other (codpminance) this could also happen. If they're each heterozygous, the chances are 1:3 for both stripes.

Shirts don't follow genetics though. Pants could, though! /bad joke
