Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]Wargall 0 points1 point ago

Are you white? You're sounding like a racist to me.

[–]mudvut 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I'm not. I'm Turkish, live in Australia.

When you are the 90% you can't truly understand the fear true racism can instill. You can know it, and claim it and even be right, but the real danger racism can only be felt by a minority. I can elaborate if you're interested.

[–]Wargall 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You seem to think being a racial minority is any different than, dunno, being a religious minority? I am an atheist and I live in the deep south. People find out? Boom, you're ostracized. Plus, you live in a VERY lliberal and tolerant country compared to the US.

[–]mudvut 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely, and I'm tankful for it. You are right re being a minority in general. Now, do you think the Christians in your state can claim discrimination from the atheist minority? They can claim it, but when they are the majority, it would be a bit funny.

I didn't say anything about racial minorities vs religious minorities, it's the same dynamic at play.

But when you have a white guy in a dominate white country, winging about racism from a minority (even though it's there, and it's wrong) it misses the true evil of racism.

[–]Wargall 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then we're at an impasse, because the way I look at it, racism is racism whether or not you're in the minority. If someone treats me differently or discriminates against me because of the color of my skin, they are being racist. It doesn't matter if they are in the minority. Justifying racism like that is like justifying murder with murder. "You do it to us, so we do it to you. Except when we do it, it's not bad"

[–]mudvut 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look, I totally agree with you. Racism is racism, and it's always bad. But the inherent evil in racism can only be felt by the weaker party, as the inherent evil in prejudice comes from a position of power and racism in its worse form is a abuse of that power. The power in this question comes from the inherent power in that exists in being the majority, and then abusing it. A black person being racist doesn't source his energy to be racist from this source of power, meh sources it from being ignorant or from hate. Which are also bad no doubt, but only a minority can feel the worst aspect of racism. It wold be the same if you were living in turkey and were a minority and people started being racist to you. You would be the minority and would feel it. It's not a question of race, but the dynamics inherent in majority vs minority situations.

Why do people actually think the American Indians were smart or had things figured out that we have since 'lost' or possessed some sort of ancient wisdom? I mean that is great for a novel or movie, but how can people actually believe that the American Indians had anything 'figured out'?

They were a collection of hunter/gatherer societies with some basic agriculture. When they weren't busy working all day and night just trying to survive, they were off killing and raping each other. They lived very rough lives that usually resulted in violent or disease ridden deaths.

The white man didn't screw anything up, we (referring to mankind) moved forward and their societies weren't compatible. I seriously think that the majority of people get their history from Disney's Pocahontas and other popular media instead of actually picking up a book.

[–]orangeapple89 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Plains Indians lives were fucking shit until the introduction of horses. They had to try and hunt buffalo using animal skin and a stick. Plus, they traveled in herds that were hard to find.

[–]rderekp 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plains Indians travelled in herds?

[–]orangeapple89 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, kinda :) They were is tribes which had sub-tribes which had sub-tribes which then had families.

It was the buffalo who traveled in herds.

[–]dirk_b 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right, it is a misguided idea.

The white man didn't screw anything up, we (referring to mankind) moved forward

However, "going forward" (thus implying we are not better off) is in the eyes of the beholder. Did we really go "forward"?
Maybe a shorter life, like the Indians had, is a small price to pay if it's a happy life. We don't know much about the happiness of these Indians, but having lived both in the city and on farms in my life I personally find it very easy to imagine that a society crafted around physical work and a balance with nature is much more enjoyable.
Yes, we now live longer, but we also spend most of our time in the office, wooptiedoo?

Screwed up not destroying the environment. other then that, I agree with you.

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That really is not true, we have records of huge man-made fires, bears driven to extinction, and so on and so forth, from long before Europeans came to America.

Here's an example. No race of people would be tolerant or lazy enough to not change the environment they live in.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is like the difference between throwing a rubber ball and shooting a rocket. At least a lot of Native Americans tried to live in balance with nature.

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The "balance of nature" does not exist; ask any ecologist. Also if you went back in time and told a Native American he lived in tune with nature he'd probably get pissed at you and show you his crib. To say that Native Americans were in tune with nature is to ignore their accomplishments, which required mastery of nature.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course balance of nature exist! otherwise the planet would destroy itself. (ok, bad example because humans kind of are destroying it.) I'm sure most ecologist, biologist, etc would mention photosynthesis, the food chain and reference something similar to either of these (but not use wikipedia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_nature http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecosystem

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you look at your article, dude? [Despite being discredited among ecologists](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_nature#Continued_popularity_of_the_theory)

It's an archaic theory which does not hold up to any statistical analysis of nature.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly I didn't because I'm at work and don't have much time.

You must realize we are nature, not separate from it. Plants and animals need each other to survive. Animals eat plants, breath oxygen, die, turn to dirt for plants to grow. Plants 'breath' carbon dioxide and are food for animals. The cycle of life, the circle of life, the Lion King, whatever. It seems odd to say that nature is unnatural and doesn't sustain itself.

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Animals drive each other out of particular environments, species drive other species to extinction, and so on and so forth. Biodiversity increases and decreases. No, nature does not kill itself, but it does not follow any particular pattern, and at any rate, we, (a part of nature, as you say) might one day become an instance of nature destroying itself.

It seems to me you have the basic idea of nutrients cycling through an ecosystem confused with the bogus idea of a "balance of nature." Maybe you should read "The Cartoon Guide to the Environment," it will give you a good starting sense of how ecologies work.

I probably agree with you on most things, such as the fact that Western cultures tend to fuck up their environments more than Native American cultures, and that humans in general are doing more damage to nature than is good for them, but I think your general conception of the environment might be flawed. An ecosystem never really is in the same state twice, because there are too many fluctuating variables (billions upon billions of species).

[–]Enda169 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The white man didn't screw anything up, we (referring to mankind) moved forward and their societies weren't compatible.

You are right until this point. Of course we screwed many things up. Ignoring the obvious things like genozide, our progress most certainly comes at a cost. We have destroyed a lot of our environment to achieve this progress. We have created many new problems when we solved our old ones.

I agree, that in general, we are overall in a better place now, then Indians or any other tribal culture was or is. But we shouldn't automatically discount every aspect of these tribal cultures, because in some areas, their ideas and morals seem to be better then our current ones.

Also dying of dysentery now and then. Also starving to death in years of drought. Also merciless infighting with neighboring tribes. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly appreciate the more pastoral pleasures of life, but to pretend that by giving some of them up we've gained nothing valuable in return is foolish.

Ahh... when I keep seeing shit like this popping up again and again, I really wish the US would just ignore the Natives even harder. Just, please, pretend even harder we're not here, and we never existed. That'd be awesome.

Some white men learned that they could do way more of those good things if they found other people to do their work for them. They called this "progress" and it was, for them, but for everyone else, it was tantamount to slavery, at least when compared to how the native americans lived.
