Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

These are the jungle version of leopards the least pleasant of the big cats. Moody bastards.

My leopard story

My sister is married to a ranger in South Africa. She saw a leopard with a fresh kill by a waterhole. A whole troop of baboons attacked it. Although out numbered it didn't just surrender its kill. It stood its ground hissing and slashing until it was surrounded and they rushed it. It sprang into the air and escaped over their backs.

Unlike other cats it did not forget about it and get on with things but bore a deep grudge against these baboons, if it found one isolated it would lie in ambush and attack. It killed a few females and babies. These kills were not to eat the baboon, as it would not have time to eat before the baboon troop would organize and attack it, but plain meanness.
It saved its deepest hate for the biggest Alpha baboon. As time went on my sister would see the Alpha male grow more battle scarred. The leopard would wait for him to be isolated and then run for him and slash at his face. The baboon troop eventually began avoiding that area.

She has a few tales of this nasty cat. Once she saw it in a ditch by the track, on its belly. Walking towards the track she saw the baboon troop. She waited to see what would happen. The Baboons veered off slightly and this took them out of the leopards sprint range, so it got up sprinted low behind the wagon, raced ahead of the baboons, slunk low and waited for them again. This time they turned around and began to head back. This all took nearly an hour. The leopard returned to the ditch to wait. Unfortunately my sis could not spend all day watching and had to get on, but its was an illustration of how much time and effort this particular cat would spend for in daylight for no real return other than slashing at the baboons, time that would be much better spent hunting prey it could eat.

One leopard single-handedly (pawed-ly?) killed over 400 people... impressive considering they're smaller than lions and tigers.

IIRC Cats are extremely territorial. Also, since that incident the baboons became a direct threat to its food. Now the leopard has two reasons to get rid of them, and it doesn't seem to be in any rush to do it.

[–]Lard_Baron 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's is very usual for a cat to do this. Any injury and its days are over. Most other cats would simply avoid the baboon troop and not waste the time and the risks of stalking them. Baboons are not to be messed with.

No such thing as a black panther. A black panther is just a melanistic color variant of any of several species of larger cats such as a jaguar, leopard, or cougar, depending on what part of the world it is found in.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_panther

There are other types of panthers, such as the Florida Panther, but it is smaller and tan in color, not black.

Here are a couple of pics of one that I snapped at the Jacksonville Zoo

If memory serves me right, I believe there is technically no such species as a panther; it's a genus composed of lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. While melanistic (or black) jaguars and leopards are usually called panthers, it would be correct only in reference to the genus, not as a separate species.

[–]teddy_dee 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Panthera is the name of the genus that includes tigers, lions, leopards, and jaguars. A "black panther" can be either a leopard or a jaguar. Also, confusingly, the cougar/mountain lion is sometimes called a panther (and can also be black), even though it isn't included in the panthera genus.

I wonder... can the Cheetah (also in genus Felinae) also be black?

[–]zgh5002 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see no reason why it couldn't. I'm fairly certain most cats carry melanistic genes, it would just be more rare for it to pop up in some more than others.

Are you sure? According to Wikipedia, Panthera is the genus which contains both panthers and leopards, but "Panther" is used to denote the Black Panther. It turns out panthers can have spots, though, which was news to me.

[–]snoobs89[S] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mistake.

[–]TheSemiTallest 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

An understandable one. Panthers go by more names than you can shake a stick at. Also, shaking a stick at an attacking panther while calling it by all of its names is a marginally effective defense mechanism.

[–]Monory 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You didn't actually read the black panther article did you? "Black Panther" is a term that applies to any variety of large cat that has melanism (makes you over produce the black pigment melanin, the opposite of albinism). From the article:

Wild black panthers in Latin America are black jaguars (Panthera onca), in Asia and Africa they are black leopards (Panthera pardus), and in North America they may be black jaguars or possibly black cougars

Having done some more research, it looks as though a melanistic leopard is indeed called a black panther, but a regular leopard is still just a leopard. Clearly all these cats are very closely related, and there still seems to be some debate as to what's what.

[–]FunkYouBench 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But there really isn't any debate. They are jaguars, leopards or cougars that have a melanistic color variant. They are all still just jaguars, leopards or cougars. The term "black panther" is basically just a slang term that describes them all IF they have the melanistic color variant. So a melanistic leopard is still just a leopard. That is like saying an albino leopard is an abominable snow leopard but a regular leopard is just a leopard. Panther is just slang to describe black cats.
