"Towers of Silence" are a real thing, but the rest of it is pretty obviously just a good old fashioned spooky story. The picture doesn't even match details in the caption.

Also, here's that photo on the website of the artist who took it.

I find this thing quite peaceful and comforting. How nice to be gathered with so many others and allowed to decompose in the light as though there were no shame or evil in merely being dead.

Yeah...except death in Zoroastrianism is unclean, that's why they're all dumped here. I mean you're free to attach you're own meaning by all means, but that's not what it means to those who left them there.

[–]Heimdall2061 105 points106 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, death IS unclean, independent of religion. Leaving corpses lying around populated areas is a great way to spread disease.

Edit: that idea about corpses polluting the ground is interesting, though. And honestly pretty rational, all things considered. I mean, without (presumably) any understanding of germ theory at the time when these rules were being laid out, that actually makes a lot of sense.

[–]razorbit 42 points43 points ago

Death isn't as dirty as most people think.

"According to health professionals, the fear of spread of disease by bodies killed by trauma rather than disease is not justified."

True but rotting flesh of any kind attracts things that do carry disease such as rats, flies and other scavengers.

[–]Kandarian 43 points44 points ago

They don't want to pollute the earth (burial), the water (sea burial) or the air (cremation) with death. The practice also called 'sky rendering.'

Yay. I knew my only class on theology would pay off one of these days.

[–]no_puppets_here 1 point2 points ago

I thought it also had something to do with the ground simply being too difficult to dig a grave in?

Or is that a different culture I'm thinking of?

[–]Kandarian 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure that's Tibetan Buddhism, but a lot of religious practices have originated from practical problems.

Oh, what's that? You're too poor to have meat every day of the week? Well, let's have lots of fast days where you're doing a holy thing if you don't eat meat. Except for fish, because the Portugese and French fishermen need to make a living. Er, I mean.. fish aren't animals! They don't have a face! It's cool if you eat them on fast days.

This is a very beautiful statement. Thank you for writing it.

I think burying the dead like we do in western cultures (at least in modernity) is more for the peace of mind of the living. Giving them a very real end to this person's physical presence in the world. Yet, we place grave stones to stand as testimony of their lives for longer than living memory could possibly care.

You really got me thinking...

[–]Heimdall2061 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, the grave stones weigh down the earth near someone's head, so their animated corpse will have a harder time escaping its earthen tomb. We're all about utility in the West.

What is a "tower of silence"?

[–]400-Rabbits 148 points149 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Zoroastrians traditionally don't bury their dead (pollutes the ground) or cremate the bodies (pollutes the fire, which is sacred; it's religion, it doesn't have to make sense). Instead the body's a are placed in a "Tower of Silence." Basically, it's just a round tower that's open to the air and has a big pit in the middle. Once beasts, bacteria, and the sun have skeletonized/mummified the body, the "cleansed" bones are pushed into the central pit. It's similar to Tibetan Sky Burial.

[–]gnarcissus 79 points80 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now I'm convinced I want a sky burial.

[–]pancakefactory 91 points92 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

tibetan sky burial contains chopping your body to handy little pieces and feed them to the vultures. I think it's very beautiful, since the tibetan vultures like to consume the bones too, you are eaten by nature and return to the circle of life completely.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points ago

That's not inherently a problem resulting from putting corpses in the ground - that's a problem resulting from pumping the corpses full of formaldehyde, makeup, silicone, styrofoam peanuts, and your little dog too, dressing them up, sticking them in elaborate padded boxes with loads of metal and (presumably) wood preservatives to make the material nice and shiny, and then putting them in the ground.

western/american burials are preceded by pumping a gigantic amount of "embalming fluids" into the body. this negates decomposition, also, the body is sealed into a plastic/metal box. so no, you do not become worm poop, you sit there doing no good. i'd rather feed a bird.

[–]ColonicIrritation 1 point2 points ago

Note the vultures can't consume the bones as is. After they consumed what they can, the monks smashes and grinds the skeleton to little pieces, mixes it with other grains and food, then continues to feed it to the vultures.

[–]robo555 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, impressive.

[–]slutsusecrutches 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

robo555 is actually right. The larger portions of the skeleton are actually recovered after the flesh is removed, they then break the bones up into smaller pieces and give them back to the vultures. I understand that you are stating what the vulture is capable of, they can't swallow the majority of human bones without assistance.

[–]absurdomatic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not positive but on Human Planet I thought they showed the vultures picking up the bones and carrying them up high so they could drop them and break them apart. I couldn't quickly find anything that talked about that behavior in Griffon Vultures but this wikipedia entry mentions it in another species http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bearded_Vulture#Behaviour.

Perhaps I'm confusing two documentaries I've seen.

[–]gormhornbori 11 points12 points ago

Build a new tower. This would take longer than you'd think though, since jumbled bones actually don't take up a lot of room, they do continue decaying, and there's nothing to stop the caretakers from speeding the process along.

Courtesty of Wiki:

The towers, which are fairly uniform in their construction, have an almost flat roof, with the perimeter being slightly higher than the center. The roof is divided into three concentric rings: The bodies of men are arranged around the outer ring, women in the second circle, and children in the innermost ring. Once the bones have been bleached by the sun and wind, which can take as long as a year, they are collected in an ossuary pit at the center of the tower, where—assisted by lime—they gradually disintegrate and the remaining material—with run-off rainwater—runs through multiple coal and sand filters before being eventually washed out to sea. The ritual precinct may be entered only by a special class of pallbearers, called nasellars, a contraction of nasa.salar, caretaker (-salar) of potential pollutants (nasa-).

We have been talking about these in one of my classes this semester. The Zoroastrians use these towers to give their bodies to the sun. What happens is that vultures typically eat them. A problem that they are currently having (especially the Parsees in the cities) is that vulture populations have decreased significantly in the past few years due to kidney failure. This is caused by a medication similar to Asprin that is used for cows in India. Since the vultures are in decline, the bodies have been stacking up, and they are having to find new ways to dispose of them. Pretty sad, actually...

[–]Snake973 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And the last functioning Tower in Iran has been closed due to lacking a substantial population of Zoroastrians (ad therefore money to maintain the site and all that). There are still Zoroastrians in Iran, but now if they want to be put in a tower after death, they will have to have their bodies shipped to India to make that happen.

Text may be excessive but Zoroastrian tradition was to leave bodies in these towers to be rapidly consumed by vultures. All worked well until a vetinary drug called diclofenac (used in cattle) started appearing in vultures, causing kidney failure. Fewer vultures, bodies rot for weeks. Indian Govt. banned the drug, but its still widely used.

Coincidentally, every other religious person on this earth holds the same opinion about their own religion.

parsi here, thought I'd drop some knowledge on everyone so they get an better idea of what Zoroastrianism is all about. It was one of the first monotheism based religions recorded. We have a concept of both heaven and hell, the good god, Ahura Mazda is depicted in all pictures in white flowing robes, black curly hair and a beard. In full form he is depicted by having a set of angel wings as well. We also have a right called a Navjote, which is a right of passage for children at the age of around 12. I had one at this age. It's a ceremony where you recite all these great prayers that you have to memorize, you are sitting there in your topi and robes, while the priest recites more prayers with you. at this time you are also playing around with your Sudreh-kusti, which is a very light cotton singlet which is tied around your waist with a long piece of cotton string.

Overall there is a lot of stuff that is very similar to other religions in the world and some can argue that Zoroastrianism helped spawn the concept of monotheism, a concept of a prophet and heaven and hell. so and so forth. Hope I enlightened some people about all this.

I am a Persian Zoroastrian, not Parsi, so I don't really know what the guy that described all these rituals is talking about. Then again, my parents are very secular so we don't take our religion seriously. All I know about my religion is from what my mother told me. She told that there is no concept of heaven and hell, but only an afterlife. The "slogan" of Zoroastrianism is as follows "Good thoughts, Good words, Good deeds". Just follow that slogan, and you are a Zoroastrian. That is why I claim that it is more "sane" than other religions, because it puts more emphasis on the effects your actions will have while you're alive, rather than the effects they will have in your chances of being accepted by god in the afterlife. Again, I really don't know much about my religion, but that is what I follow. Mama says think good, speak good, and do good and ya'll be good.

Well sky burial is real, that's the most likely bit of it. The blood thing seems exaggerated. Blood coagulates and solidifies whether outside or inside a dead organism, in a large pit it would likely dry up and have damp bacterial mould grow on it (have tested blood in a lab before). The blood wouldn't have stayed sealed in a 'pool' as described.

[–]Snake973 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Technically towers of silence are part of a different religion than sky burials. There are similar bits, but towers are Zoroastrian and sky burials are Buddhist.

Oh look, the TinEye add on in Firefox brought me to this site.

And this is the translated version (thanks to the Google Translate add on)

The Zoroastrian Towers of Silence November 2, 2010 - 11:35 pm

NOTICE: This article contains images of corpses. If you are a sensitive and impressionable, avoid reading the rest of this entry .

The Towers of Silence (also known as dakhma or dokhma) are funerary monuments of the Zoroastrian religion. They are used for the decomposition of bodies by the action of sun and rain, in addition to its predation on account of vultures.

Its structure is circular and has a terrace for the exhibition of bodies and a central ossuary, located on a lower level. The terrace is divided into three concentric circles: the exterior to house men, intermediate for women, and indoor children. It includes a radial gutter allow the evacuation of body fluids and rain to the central ossuary. The Zoroastrian Towers of SilenceThis religion considers the human body as an impurity, which has entered the evil spirit Ahriman, whose purpose is the destruction of the order divine. To prevent contamination of the deceased's body one of the Seven Creations, the Zoroastrian code of laws established a strict protocol to get rid of the remains of the safest manner possible.

As part of this protocol, the body must be exposed to some of these towers. Once this is devoured by vultures and bleached by the sun, the remains were deposited in the charnel house that, with the help of lime, to disintegrate completely. The Zoroastrian Towers of SilenceHere is the aerial view of an ancient tower on the outskirts of Yazd , Iran. Re currently on disuse. For health reasons, in the seventies of last century was banned in that country practicing Zoroastrian funeral rites. The Zoroastrian Towers of SilenceIn Malabar Hill in Bombay, India, are still in use some of these towers. The picture below dates from around 1880. Note the row of vultures perched on the edge of the tower. These other, which show the interior of a tower, are of late 90. To then already considered a serious problem the disappearance of the vultures to cause of development urbanistic of Bombay. The absence of scavengers has increased enormously the process of decomposition of bodies, to the extent that the Zoroastrians have been forced to use, without much success, artificial alternatives such as solar concentrators.

The whole biblical version of hell came from the ancient practice of throwing unclaimed corpses into a pit or a fire outside the city walls or on the outskirts of town. When the bible mentions being cast into the fire or cast into the pit, that's all it is -- just a factual statement.
