You see the floaters you have your whole life. Want to see your eyeball guts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_W-IXqoxHA

Want to see actual "eyeball guts"? Fun fact, the lens makes a fine bouncy ball, and is great for pissing people off by throwing it in their hair. It sticks.

I had a spontaneous eye lens fight once. Apparently I made a "mockery" out of my grandma's funeral.

Saw that a while back. Just finding out that I had a blind spot blew my mind, but when they explained why I think I blacked out for a few minutes.

SO.... with genetic engineering the retina can be put in the proper place to improve both resolution and dynamic range and sensitivity to light and have no blind spot?

The future is going to be amazing.

If you do it right, there is a way to see the white blood cells and the veins in your eyes. The white blood cells sound a bit like what you saw.

[–]catnamedchicken 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you were unsupervised.

[–]the_human_man 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atoms? Are you talking about those small, bright dots moving real fast? Those are white blood cells. It's actually not the white blood cells you see, but the gap they create in between the red blood cells in the capillaries in front of the retina. These blood vessels are so thin that they only fit one "stack" of blood cells, and since the white blood cells are larger and fewer than the red blood cells, they create these gaps appearing like bright dots.

Try this out fer size; had a black spot open in vision suddenly one day, went to doctor, turns out it was a tear in my macula. That day they told me they needed to lazer it shut...So five minutes later some numbing cream in my eye, then A FRICKIN NEEDLE INJECTION INTO MY EYE of more numbing stuff, and taped my good eye shut. Then literally using the eye clippers they use in clockwork orange pried open the eye they were gonna work on, I was waiting for the Beethoven to come on... Then in pitch darkness fired a green laser repeatedly into my eye, could feel it every time it hit the inside of eyeball, not only that but the green light bounced around inside my eyeball for a second or two after they turned off the light. The lazer also illuminated all the veins in my eyes as well, so in the pitch dark it looked some giant fading warbling sea coral exploding into green neon luminescence then fading away. Couldn't see right out of that eye for a few days, fixed it though. Still have a dark shadow in the corner of that eye were the source of the lazer was, crazy shit, been fading over the last 10 months or so... TL:DR LAZERS IN MUH EYEBAWHLS

[–]undefinedbehavior 58 points59 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's kind of awesome when you think about it. They fixed your eye with a fricking laser - we're living in the future, man!

[–]Assbutticus 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny thing...I had/have a phobia of lazers, even the ones on optical lazer mouse. Heehee lazer mice...

[–]Saganomics 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it makes you feel better, there are no lasers on a regular optical mouse. It's essentially a camera and a red LED.

It's 1986~. Friend and I are slamming metal files together in shop class producing a large amount of sparks. One spark goes in my eye, but I don't do anything about it. The next morning my eye is swollen shut and my parents take me to the ER.

The sparks were actually little pieces of metal and one of them was lodged in my eye. They numb me up, hook me up to the Clockwork Orange hold your eye open thing. Then the doctor takes a very long and thin needle and begins to slowly dig the piece of metal out of my eye.

It took maybe 15 minutes of him very carefully and slowly moving the tiny piece of metal out, the entire time I have to watch the needle that is stuck in my eye and try not to move.

I feel your pain.

Yup! My mother totally panicked when I was around 8 yrs old and started describing them to her. My father was complaining of double-vision, and later that same day had a massive brain hemorrhage. So when I started complaining about strange eye-sight my mother rushed me in. My pediatrician apparently didn't know wtf I was talking about either and sent me to an eye specialist who finally told her, as I recall, "Bitch please! Everyone has eye squiggles!"

Or look into a lamp. afaik they are shades caused by little imperfections in the liquid inside the eye. If theres a strong light in front of you they cast shadows on the back of the eye.

Used to have just a few when I was a kid but then I got some glasses with the wrong polarity, and after a couple of days with sore eyes I suddenly had way more than before. When I ask my doctor about it he says it's coincidental, since they cannot be provoked into existence.

Optometry student here. Definitely not eye worms. That was most likely referring to toxoplasmosis which can present as retinal inflammation. These are caused by loose vitreous strands. Some floaters can be a sign of retinal detachment but normally they are fine.

My sister has toxoplasmosis in one of her eyes. In her case, it isn't a worm, but it sorta looks like one. It sucks because if it flares up again, she'll probably lose sight in that eye.

I had a relative with vascular and diabetic issues.
His eye would bleed when he got upset, the blood would float in his vitreous humour, and then the blood would coagulate and affect his vision.
The treatment was to clamp his eye open. Bisect it. Suck the juice out. Cauterize the spots prone to bleed. Reseal and refill.
He had a regimen of antibiotic eye drops to take for months afterward.

Floaters are suspended in the vitreous humour, the thick fluid or gel that fills the eye.[5] Thus, they generally follow the rapid motions of the eye, while drifting slowly within the fluid. When they are first noticed, the natural reaction is to attempt to look directly at them. However, attempting to shift one's gaze toward them can be difficult since floaters follow the motion of the eye, remaining to the side of the direction of gaze.

Floaters are particularly noticeable when looking at a blank surface or an open monochromatic space, such as blue sky. Despite the name "floaters", many of these specks have a tendency to sink toward the bottom of the eyeball, in whichever way the eyeball is oriented

It's not weird to have them, and it's not weird to not have them.

Your status of having or not having them is not weird, and is usually not a concern.

In other words (less drunk words): Everyone is normal, yay

I used to chase them around too. Then I got in the habit of just looking at them in the periphery and trying to figure out what shapes they look like. Then I would enjoy the kitty or ice cream come floating around my vision! Thanks. I haven't thought about floaties in forever.

I've been dealing with these for a while. Only an issue with monitors and looking at the sky, for the most part, but considering both are frequent, it's become quite an issue.

It's Actually completely normal, your veins in your eyes are in front of the lens that sees everything, all the red blood cells absorb the light and are invisible to us, we get the occasional white blood cell that goes through, they reflect blue light, making them visible.. so when we look at the sky we are seeing the white blood cells and the path they are taking in our veins of our eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkUwogWzSwk

They're commonly referred to as "floaters". Your eyes are filled with this jelly like stuff with liquidy goop floating around. These floaters happen when some of that goopy stuff solidifies on the inside membrane of your eye. They break off and float around with the shifting movement of your body. They suck and will be there for the rest of your lives. Theres also times when you can mistake them for the little airbubbles that form over your eye sometimes when you blink

EYE FLOATERS

[–]nemomnemosyne 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've got a question I hope someone will be able to answer. I understand these are called floaters and are dust particulates that come in contact with the fluid over your eyes, but I experience something else when I look at the blue sky.

I can only really explain it as a bunch of tiny disorganized moving ''dots''. They don't have a color I can really name with any certainty, and though they're great in number, I can only really focus on one at a time and even then for a very short amount of time. I can't explain how tiny these things I see might be, just that they are almost pinprick if not smaller in size.

Anyone know what the hell this is called?

So these are called vitreous floaters. The vitreous is the largest section in your eye and basically gives the eye it's large round shape. It's the fluid/gel like material in front of your retina. It is full of hyaluronic acid and collagen. What you are seeing is bundles of collagen (so it's a completely entoptic phenomenom). Your eye is pretty good at filtering out most of these (especially when light hits the floaters perpendicular) but when light at an angle hits these, your eye is not so good at filtering them and you see these floaters.

These are completely normal and almost everyone has them. The only time you should be concerned is if you notice a sudden increase in the amount of floaters you see or if they are accompanied by flashes of light. These can range from a fairly harmless posterior vitreous detachment to serious retinal detachments.

p.s. man it feels good knowing this stuff without looking up wikipedia lol

They're actually coagulated fluid from the inside of your eye casting shadows on your retina.

Oh squiggly line, in my eye fluid. I see you there, lurking on the periphery of my vision. But when I try to look at you, you scurry away? Are you shy, squiggly line? Why only when I ignore you do you return to the center of my eye? Oh squiggly line, it's allright. You are forgiven.

[–]LudwigVonMeatwagon 1 point2 points ago

You can see them better, and multiple layers of goodness, if you squint your eyes 95.7% shut and stare directly at a light. Crack your eyes just enough to let some of the light through your eyelashes.

[–]candl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a lot of floaters in my eyes. I remember them ever since I was a kid in elementary school. It's difficult to say whether any of them disappear over time. The bigger ones I had for years. Some fraction of them moved a bit to the side of my eyes so they are not as annoying as they used to be.

Most of the floaters I have are not as transparent as the one in the gif animation. (Although I have a few of these too). They have a lot of dots, circles, lines that are inside of them. I made a very simplified version in PS (In reality they are more complex) http://i40.tinypic.com/sxoi3d.jpg The circles seen inside look more of less like this (depending on the floater, they are more blurred, or more detailed): http://i44.tinypic.com/29opbif.jpg

As a matter of fact the circles seem to be almost everywhere, but most of them are in the background, so they are barely visible, whatever the fluid in the eyes is, it's made of it.

Fun fact I noticed: If you have very moist eyes, especially if you were crying you can squint your eyes (Actually, doing it woth one eye works best, just keep the other one closed) and look at a light source. By adjusting your eyelid you can try to catch more focus, and the tears in your eyes can act as a magnifying glass. Often times I can manage to get a good look at the circles http://i44.tinypic.com/29opbif.jpg. It's quite creepy, they are floating everywhere etc.

Fuck dude! This is awesome! I really really thought I was the only one and didn't bother telling anyone about it thinking they would think I was weird or stupid. I used to think I was able to see tiny water molecules on the periphery of my vision (I'm 24 now). I know there are too many posts on here, but thank you so much for this post. Okay... so i've been reading for a while now... Can't find what it ACTUALLY is...

I use to be able to see them whenever I wanted to... When I was like 10ish.

Now I don't see them anymore... or cant remember how to do it.

Anyone else also use to do the... "make the lights streak" game?

I would squint my eyes while in the car (back seat... not that it matters... i was a kid)... Then every light I passed by would "streak"... dunno if thats the right word. But like think of tron motorcycles... Having the tail and what not... I could make a bunch of lights all follow one point... if that makes sense...

I can still do it with lights... cant see the squiggleys nemore..
