Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Might want to get that cough looked at, but yea... it's a sinkhole.

Wow really? some sand on top of what is clearly an asphalt parking lot and you believe it's quicksand then?

[–]no_egrets 1 point2 points ago*

This looks a lot like the Netherlands. If it is, plenty of their paving is done straight onto the levelled sand. A lot of the country is below sea level.

Edit: it's not an asphalt lot, unless I misunderstand the word. It's paved (using tessellating bricks). Check the tiles in the bottom-left and the pattern in the top-right. The sand has come from the water, most likely.

That's usually why sinkholes occur, yes.

EDIT: OR it could be just an underground tunnel system, such as a sewer. Just some kind of underground hole is all that's necessary.

Most likely there is a cavern, but not a natural one. Most urban sinkholes occur when a pipe (water, sewer, steam, etc) develops a small leak. Over time that leak will strip away material (moving it "down stream), leaving behind a cavern like void under the surface.

At some point the stress and strain over-comes the greatly weakened support and presto, a car in a hole.

In KY we're in a karst region with a lot of limestone (including the biggest cave evar) so we have natural sinkholes pop up even in urban areas. Most areas are surveyed well enough that this wouldn't happen, but every once in a while it can.

My above description is especially true in areas with a lot of limestone and other forms of sedimentary deposits, like the Guatemala sinkhole from a couple years ago

[–]fanboat 1 point2 points ago

WOW, that is a large hole. I hadn't considered the fact that human activity could amplify the natural effect!

I believe it's called 'liquifaction' by the look of the sand on the paving stones.

Your cutrate insurance might not cover random sinkholes in the middle of paverbrick parking lots.

That's why you should go with Allstate. You'll save some cash and be better protected from Mayhem... like me.

"Quicksand is a mix of sand, mud and water and depending on the viscosity it's not as dangerous as people sometimes think." -Indiana Jones

[–]NorthAve 1 point2 points ago

This is why you never put paving stones (or anything) on top of sandy materials near subways or trains. If the sandy soil is saturated, the vibrations from the trains can cause liquification of the sand, causing it to act like a liquid instead of a solid.
