Endor's forest moon, not Endor itself.

[–]Bobius 25 points26 points ago

There's ambiguity in the film about this (and indeed in Star Wars Trivial Pursuit) - the moon is also referred to as Endor.

[–]Osiris32 24 points25 points ago

Quote from Admiral Ackbar: "...the nearby forest moon of Endor."

Does that mean the name of the forest moon IS Endor, or that the Forest Moon ORBITS Endor? Goddamn vague language!!

Technically, a tree isn't a cylinder. Geometrically speaking, it has a large number of faces, or sides.

[–]jt004c 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What does that even mean? A tree is cylindrical. Technically nothing in nature is a cylinder "geometrically speaking." For that matter there are no geometrically perfect circles, straight lines, triangles or anything else, either.

[–]TesticleToe 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A tree is cylindrical.

A tree is far too erratic to be considered a cylinder or cylindrical. A tree is an asymmetrical, polygonal fuck fest.

For that matter there are no geometrically perfect circles, straight lines, triangles or anything else, either.

Do you mean in nature? Or ever?

Also: Technically a line is straight. "Straight line" is redundant.

Line (geometry) - an infinitely-extending one-dimensional figure that has no curvature.

[–]noumuon 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

technically, quite a lot of lines in a hyperbolic geometry end up curved when represented on a euclidean surface. so those representations of hyperbolic lines are indeed curved by our view of them, yet still lines.

edit: also, just thought of a better counterpoint: the real projective line. the problem with your idea that "straight line" is redundant is fundamentally a misunderstanding of the concept of curvature, which is inherently a relation to the space the object is embedded in (unless you're talking about the curvature of manifolds, but that's a different topic). what you're left with is that what appears or has the properties of being curved may not necessarily have curvature and may qualify for a line. you could even end up in weird geometries where lines are congruent to circles, thus they're essentially the same type of object.

[–]TesticleToe 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. The many folds.

[–]jt004c 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? These are the things you decided to open your comment window and punch into your keyboard?

  1. Some trees are more cylindrical than others, but their basic body plan is cylindrical. This isn't a matter of debate...it's a matter of you being an idiot and not understanding words.

  2. In context, I obviously meant in nature, but considering that nature is everything, I also meant "ever." Please direct me to an example of a perfect geometric anything and I will direct you to an electron microscope to prove you wrong.

  3. So if a line is "technically" straight, what, in your mind, should we called curved lines?

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]WisestMissile 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The operative word being 'line.'

[–]WisestMissile 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. That does not change the fact that a curved line will still be called a curved line.

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...

He said a line is straight by definition. He is wrong. A curved line is a type of line.

not sure where the guy was going, but given that matter is discrete, you simply cannot have a perfect euclidean circle.

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was going with the point that anything that looks perfect at one level of zoom will stop looking that way when you zoom in on it. Was it really that difficult to infer?

By the way, my point is more fundamentally true than any argument about "discrete matter" which is more philosophical than scientific anyway. It simply doesn't even mean anything to talk about "perfect circles" comprised of matter when you get to an atomic scale.

[–]noumuon 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was going with the point that anything that looks perfect at one level of zoom will stop looking that way when you zoom in on it. Was it really that difficult to infer?

that's an odd, somewhat trivial point, that's not necessarily relevant to the notion of perfect geometric objects. it simply uses the obfuscation of magnification, and is not really an argument, as it isn't even necessarily true, depending on the level atomic/subatomic that you wish to look, and then it becomes true only due to the discrete matter of nature versus a continuous geometry.

By the way, my point is more fundamentally true than any argument about "discrete matter" which is more philosophical than scientific anyway.

the argument of discrete matter is nothing but a scientific notion analyzed rationally against mathematical definitions. a euclidean circle is by definition continuous. you could certainly have a perfect circle belonging to some discrete geometry in the real world. there's nothing scientifically impossible about it. your "fundamental" argument, if not taking into the issue of continuity and the lack of matter to form a continuous structure, is false when looking at geometric objects on different sets and operations.

It simply doesn't even mean anything to talk about "perfect circles" comprised of matter when you get to an atomic scale.

maybe this is an issue you're having with the understand of the geometry. it only doesn't make sense to talk about a perfect euclidean circle for the reason of the geometry involved. on the atomic level we can make very precise arrangements of atoms. it's a big part of nanotechnology. in some sense it's quite "easy" on the atomic level to get certain "perfect" shapes given the nature of the structures that atoms naturally form into, such as lattices.

See that storm trooper's helmet? It's different than other helmets, in fact, it indicates that he's a scout trooper. In the third movie of the original trilogy, these poor bastards were riding speeder bikes all over an enormous, planet or moon spanning forest trying to kill the main characters. Imagine a motorcycle with a jet engine (Like, the Y2k) racing down streets filled with Corinthian marble columns with predictable, explosive, high fatality results. In fact, the fragile nature of these bikes translated into the toys for speeder bikes all being equipped with an "explode" button. Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrrrmhUz2o4 1:15 and beyond

So, they hit stuff. A lot. Specifically trees.

Edit 2: He may have specifically been referring to the poor bastard thrown off of his bike, whereupon he has an argument with a tree and loses.
