For those that are confused, T-shirts, hats, etc are made for both team saying that they won before the super bowl. For the team that loses, their merchandise is shipped to Africa where underprivileged can wear the losing team's Super bowl clothes.

[–]BipolarBear0 104 points105 points ago

.... So if I went to Africa I could potentially trade a starving child some food for a Patriots super bowl champions shirt?

Fuck, lets get this in the works! We can skip the step of actually giving poor people clothes, and just photoshop african kids onto the shirt! YES! PUUUUUURE PROFIT!

Some guys actually did this a few years back. They found that the shirts were shipped to South America (I think it was Guatemala but i may be wrong) by some aid organization. They flew down there, talked to people from the agency to find where the village was, traveled there and actually saw a whole bunch of people wearing the losing team's shirts. They traded them some goods for them too. I wish i could find the article on this?

Somewhere in Africa, there is a group of kids who think that they are wearing the clothes of the ultimate redemption story: a team that lost 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, and then went on to have an undefeated season and a 2nd title 4 years later.

My friend used to work in Africa and got a "19-0" hat at a Nigerian flea market. He gave it to a mutual friend of ours who is a huge Giants fan. That friend still wears it proudly.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that the apparel manufacturers have some sort of agreement or policy in place with the NFL (or other professional leagues) which does not allow the merchandise to be distributed in the United States or other major viewing markets. There is also probably some sort of commitment with a charity that brings the clothing to the people in the third world countries.

[–]MmmCoffeeBreath 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That’s a lot of misprinted shirts that can’t hit store shelves, and seem like fine candidates for the incinerator, instead. And for a long time, that’s where they went, with all four major American pro sports leagues — MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL — requiring the destruction of incorrect post-season apparel.

Fortunately, the leagues have changed the way they do things and now all four – plus manufacturers and retailers like Reebok, Sports Authority, Dick’s and Modell’s — instead give the gear to a group called World Vision, which saves the merch from certain doom and puts it to use.

Overseas distribution is part of the agreement between the leagues and World Vision. The leagues don’t want the donated items appearing on TV or popping up on eBay, so they get them out of the country.

Sometime in the distant future, archeologists are going to dig up these T Shirts separated on 2 different continents. Then they will have a huge discussion, about who really won the Superbowl, and how two great continents fought over it and through political propaganda, each side claimed to have won. The question will be, who really won?

Reasons why shipping t-shirts to Africa isn't such a good idea.

[–]austex_mike 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who has lived and worked in Africa, this rant by some random blogger sounds good in theory, but in reality I think the idea that giving free t-shirts hurts local shirt makers is just absurd. These people are not saying to themselves "Hey, now that I have this t-shirt, I will not have to buy another shirt." If they want a shirt and actually save the money for one, they will buy it. On the micro level this person may think the argument makes sense, but I seriously doubt on the macro level you would statistically be able to show any influence on shirt sales in a village because of these giveaways.

[–]Soylent_Veal 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In West Africa at least the markets are already flooded with used clothing that was bailed up and shipped over here (Africa). On average a decent tshirt costs less than 50 cents while a hand-sewn shirt costs upwards of $3-5, depending on material and sewmanship.

The local tailored clothing business has been decimated for a long time, though it still goes on with demand for traditional cloths and new cloths for the wealthier.

Cite thought-provoking blog written by academic from well respected news source: downvoted. "Um, like I lived there and think that you're wrong.": upvoted to the heavens.

Reddit logic.

[–]austex_mike 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Without a proper citation of a study of some sort, both the "academic" and myself are just speculating. Thus I challenge her idea and ask if there really would be statistical evidence to support the claims of this blogger, which, that is all that article was, a blog. It was not a peer-reviewed paper or anything even close.

Additionally you have no idea what my academic background is, but believe it or not I did do a study on the early signs of globalization and how the American Civil war influenced the cotton industry in North Africa during the middle 19th century, so I actually have some understanding of the textile industry and how it relates to Africa.

That isn't Reddit logic (read: flawed logic) that is good, honest debate.

[–]Farabee[!] 0 points1 point ago

What are we supposed to send then? Food? Medicine? Cold hard cash? That's worked out well for them before.

See, the problem is most of these African nations are run by corrupt governments and kept poor by greedy, violent warlords. Perishable items and currency are things they can make use of, Super Bowl t-shirts generally aren't. Say what you will about these items messing with the local economy, at least they're doing someone who needs them some actual good.

I had a night full of meme worthy content:

Got pulled over BEFORE I made it to the bar.

Go to the casino, Win $45 side bet and come out ahead.

Drive home drunk, drive past 7 cop cars and a firetruck and a car engulfed in flames on highway.

Win all political and religious discussions on the way home while eating hashbrowns and drinking coffee.

Fuck yea.... kinda... the burning car was a bummer, but I know now that no one died. T.T Fuck yea, winning mad cash at the casino.

Just for the record, any NFL fans that live outside the US especially in Europe, where the live game will be well after midnight (which includes US Armed Forces in Europe and the Mid-East) will likely be watching the Superbowl from DVR or on-line today, Monday. While common sense tells you to just avoid any news services, I thought I'd be safe checking Reddit. I should have known better, but at least I caught the heading and quickly switched tabs before I saw who won. Otherwise, would have been a big spoiler.

It was on live at 10am here in Melbourne, so I did what I usually do on Monday mornings, and went to the pub.

I was under the impression that the Patriots super bowl shirts were destroyed instantly. I didn't know they sent them to Africa.

So, did you have a "Patriots won the Super Bowl" image pre-made in case that occurred?

I think that would have been a golden parallel.
