David Bowie as Tesla: amazing choice.

[–]drweir 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He was so good it actually took me a few seconds to realize who it was who was playing Tesla. And when I walked past the Nikola Tesla memorial at the Niagara Falls in 2010 I actually thought "Hey, David Bowie!" for a split second.

[–]thmanwithnoname 10 points11 points ago

I liked the rest of the movie, but Bowie//Tesla was really what made it for me.

I absolutely love The Prestige. Amazing story, great music etc.

My least favorite part of the movie is when Bowie has a scene. To me, I feel like those scenes drag. This is coming from a background of almost never seeing/hearing anything David Bowie has done - his music, labyrinth, etc. I know I'll get down-voted for stating this, but just wanted to throw it out there.

[–]Joon01 25 points26 points ago

I love Bowie. I enjoyed The Prestige. I enjoyed Bowie in The Prestige.

But I didn't downvote you for simply having an opinion. If you were an asshole about it or just said "bowie blows lol" that'd be one thing. But, come on people, you're going to downvote someone with a perfectly fair opinion who expresses it evenly, simply because you don't like it?

That's crap.

But what about the people who thought the film was somewhat twee and mediocre? Could those of us who disliked it have a widdershins circlejerk of our own?

[–]notboring 0 points1 point ago

I love the word twee. A really underused word! Unfortunately, the word means "excessively sentimental, sweet, or pretty" which does not apply to this movie at all. But still, the word gets an upvote.

[–]con42scientist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never really understood why talking about the good qualities of a movie automatically relate it to a "circlejerk" negating it's relevance and credibility? This is r/movies. We discuss movies here.

[–]Freewheelin 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Calling something amazing or awesome over and over again and downvoting all dissenting opinions doesn't really amount to much discussion. That's what a circlejerk is. And that's what r/movies does best. We don't actually discuss movies here at all, especially not Nolan movies.

[–]xebo 0 points1 point ago

Less Jackman, more Bale, and it would have been one of the best movies ever made

[–]Cold417 36 points37 points ago

The Prestige totally killed The Illusionist. Both are great movies!

[–]Odusei 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Parts of The Illusionist are good, but that love scene in front of the fireplace... just holy shit. It's like they brought in the writers from a bad TV soap to write the most cliched love dialogue they could imagine, and follow it up with a slow pan to a fireplace. It was the sort of stuff I'd expect in a South Park parody of a movie love scene.

[–]wreckage88 36 points37 points ago

I think it's some of Christian Bale's best work....the struggle of his character(s) was insane

[–]VikingMop 20 points21 points ago

I took some years for me to realize how great actor that guy is...

[–]deejayalemus 35 points36 points ago

I call this the Brad Pitt effect (pretty boy actor actually has talent but it takes a while for you to notice)

[–]VikingMop 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...That's actually bloody accurate. I did think the same about Brad Pitt, "oh, he is another pretty boy. Haha". But later "oh holy shit, this guy is actually good!".

I think the same goes for Leonardo DiCaprio. His pretty-boy image from Titanic left an impression it took years to ignore.

I remember watching "Catch Me If You Can" and just resenting him for being so goddamn pretty, never mind how good his acting actually was. Of-course after watching "Shutter Island" I was totally sold on the guy.

Leonardo DiCaprio effect as well?

[–]An_Arab 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who's adolescence lined up with Titanic and Romeo and Juliet, it will be forever called the DiCaprio effect. I didn't really begin to appreciate him until Blood Diamond, which isn't even anywhere close to his best work so far.

[–]Propolandante 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, I didn't dislike Titanaic. I totally see why so many people ragged on it, but I've always thought it was a decent film. But when I saw The Departed I was like "Sheeeeeit, this Leonardo guy is legit!"

[–]deejayalemus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. Took me longer to catch on to him... but Basketball Diaries hinted as his potential.

[–]myrmecophilous 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

have you seen the machinist? Bale takes his craft very, very seriously.

[–]ivaliciantea 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He is, however, an unfortunate "Method" actor. I put quotations there because there's a problem with the American interpretation with Method acting. It was invented by a man called Stanislavsky and instructed actors to work on their characters from the inside to the outer machinations. But when his work was translated from Russian into English, some key points were missed and now some actors believe that the true "Method" is to become the character they portray. To live the character in their daily lives. (Ironically, this ties in quite nicely with the themes of The Prestige itself.)

I only bring up this spiel because the people who commit themselves to this idea can end up with some totally messed up identity issues. Bale may take his craft very seriously, but I do not envy him the struggle it must cost him. His path of acting is a very rough one.

[–]Shalmander 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a stereotype that all actors have identity issues. Method or not.

[–]ivaliciantea 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The...atypical stereotype? Isn't that an oxymoron? Well played, sir.

[–]Shalmander 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Err actually I had the wrong definition for atypical in my head. I could write a book around that mistake.

Should be, "Identity problems are stereotypical of actors."

I KNOW WHO I AM! I'm the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude!

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...and the problem is???

[–]candygram4mongo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's hardly just an American phenomenon -- take Daniel Day-Lewis for instance.

[–]ivaliciantea 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I should clarify that statement-- it's a misconception that's carried out in English-speaking countries, where the mistranslation had its full effect. However, it's predominant in America because that's where a lot of the people who taught "Method" acting where in America.

[–]M_Ahmadinejad 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, he REALLY gets into character. He went months practically starving himself to get to 130 lbs for The Machinist. Then for Batman Begins, which he did next, he put on 100 lbs in just 6 months (although realized he overshot and brought his weight back down a little).

[–]o10jack01o[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

An apple and a pack of cigarettes was pretty much his diet leading up to that role I hear. I never did understand why that movie never got the attention it deserved..

[–]AlturGeis 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's because it wasn't a great movie. I really like it, but it's very slow and full of unlikable characters. His performance was incredible though. No arguing that.

[–]tiberone 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm really not a Christian Bale fan, but he is just so magnificent in this role, it's like he transcends being Christian Bale to me. I honestly don't even recognize that he's that guy from Batman or the Machinist or Public Enemies or The Fighter etc etc, just that he does an incredible job in the Prestige.

[–]morkrom 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Part of the reason for that is because he is guarded about his private life. You only see him in movies and the odd interview, so you only know him through the characters he portray. I really wish more actors would do this.

[–]thereallyguy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think Kevin Spacey do the same.

[–]-Valenza- 0 points1 point ago

[–]Moosebomber 14 points15 points ago

I used to argue with my friend all the time about The Prestige and The Illusionist. He tried telling me The Illusionist was a better movie but I honestly though it completely sucked and didn't hold a candle what so ever to The Prestige. What do you guys think?

These came out around the same time that is why it was up for debate.

[–]thmanwithnoname 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I watched them within a week of each other, and I've got to say that I liked them both. I think the Prestige is better, but I really enjoyed watching both of them and I'll happily watch each of them again.

[–]tiberone 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I enjoyed The Illusionist but honestly it's not anywhere close to being on the same level as The Prestige. The Prestige is an absolute masterpiece of cinema, truly an incredible accomplishment in visual story telling.

[–]Outsider524 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I could not agree more, I actually hated The Illusionist.... But that could also be because I really don't like Edward Norton, or maybe just the fact that the sum of all the parts in The Prestige were just better; Nolan, Bale, Caine, and Jackman created something truly special. I still watch it at least once a year.

[–]sxysteve 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See I love Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti.

[–]wreckage88 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember seeing both around the same time. The Illusionist was good but The Prestige just nailed it with all the intrigue and pain and plus the amazing cast. I agree with the OP in that the last half of the movie my mind was blown and jaw left on the floor.

[–]Planet-man -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I way preferred the Illusionist. The Prestige relied on too many insane coincidences and stupid decisions. To me it embodies everything that can go wrong with Nolan's style, while Inception is everything that can go right and The Dark Knight is somewhere in between.

[–]sxysteve 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you crazy!? Stupid decisions? That is what the whole movie is about. The moral choices we make and how it will affect us. How is it worth it sometimes to go all out and do the big trick. Yeah he may be killing himself or a clone every single time but he has the fame and the glory and the revenge he was looking for.

[–]Planet-man 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not morally or emotionally stupid, that stuff was as brilliant and thought-provoking as any Nolan film. Logical, common sense stuff, right down to Jackman not being the one in charge of tying his wife's hands at the beginning.

[–]notboring 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. In spite of the CGI magic tricks, it's still the more honest film. I simply could not buy the idea of a cloning machine, let alone the absurd use its put to in the flick. Tesla was great, but he wasn't Star Trek Warp Drive great.

[–]Planet-man 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't mind the sci-fi aspect because.... well, it's historical fiction and there are way more improbable sci-fi devices in way better films. It was the way the plot worked that didn't live up for me.

[–]notboring 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Time travel, faster than light travel and teleportation are just about the only things less believable than insta-cloning.

The Prestige is one of my favorite movies, and is certainly my favorite Nolan movie. That said, I think you're absolutely correct and I don't know why you're being downvoted. The Prestige is a grim, relentless film. It has almost no levity in its entire runtime and essentially nothing to please the popcorn set. Both of the Batman films and Inception are more 'entertaining' in a mainstream sense.

Nolan does that. He also relies on a lot of visual cues throughout his films. Physical mannerisms, clothes that don't fit quite right, resemblances you can't quite put your finger on...it's why he's an absolute genius as a director. He's perfect at showing rather than telling.

Spoilers ahead. The twin brother twist made the move, but am I the only one that was pissed about the cloning? It was the only thing in the movie that was extremely out of place. Especially for a movie with a lot of mystery, where the audience is trying to figure out how the illusions were performed and BAM the answer is cloning. I just thought it was kind of a cop out after the great reveal of the twin brother. For me it was up there with time travel or gremlin magic. /rant

Edit: Spoiler warning

[–]CircumcisedSpine 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked it. I thought the use of the Tesla machine to churn out clones shows how far Jackman was willing to go to top Bale... he was willing to engage in wholesale murder, fueled by an incredibly powerful machine that could have earth shattering implications for humanity, all to top his rival doing an illusion involving a twin.

I thought that was great.

[–]khazzam 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Murder/Suicide! Jackman's dialog at the end where he tells how hard it was to step into the machine everytime, never sure which one he would be. Brilliant.

You're right this totally made the movie. It was a study of talent vs ambition which wouldn't have worked quite as well without the cloning element.

[–]standard_error 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should warn people about spoilers.

Spoilers ahead

Anyway, to me the cloning thing is the central idea of the movie. I don't think it's a cop out at all, on the contrary it is there to show us how broken Jackman's character has become in his quest for revenge.

Also, it really makes you think twice about trying out that shiny new teleporter you know someone's going to build sooner or later.

yes it is a little disappointing but nolan explicitly tells you that it is going to be disappointing. cutter's character (michael caine) says something to the effect of: you want to be fooled, the secret of any magic trick is always more disappointing than simply watching the trick, people want to believe in magic. the whole point is that angiers trick was simple. borden's trick was also simple/disappointing, in that cutter had been saying the whole time that borden was using a double, and lo and behold, he was using a double

Spoilers ahead:

For me it kind of seemed out of place, but ii kind of fit in at the same time. The idea that, for magicians, real "magic" has to be dressed down to be seen as an entertainer's trick was interesting. I mean here you have one of the most incredible inventions that would have marked a turning point in civilization one way or the other and what does it end up as, an instrument to stroke people's fancy (although Jackman's character's statement about an act being able to stimulate people's wonder and take them above the common drudgery of life was moving). The inclusion of Tesla helped to drive it home considering the profit-fueled ostracization he faced in life and the potential he represented.

On a more direct level, it was a useful plot device to illustrate Jackman's character's acceptance of risk in a magician's quest to entertain, placed against the backdrop of his wife's demise (even if it was all for revenge). The part where he was never sure whether he was actually the version of himself that would be disposed of after the trick made it an incredibly risky act.

Borden did not have a twin, he had a clone. That is why "Tesla" was his code word.

No. I, too, was disappointed that his secret behind the trick was actual magic.

[–]MaxChaplin 5 points6 points ago

IIRC, the teleporter was introduced 15 minutes in and was revealed to be a cloning machine before we've actually seen Angier's illusion. So no, sci-fi wasn't used to cop anything out.

[–]domstersch 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. There was plenty of foreshadowing: the hats, the cats and who Tesla was in real life ("it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the very wheelwork of nature") - all of it pointed at a machine that actually worked. I was surprised it wasn't more of a mystery; I thought it was going to be the main reveal.

That would be Hugh Jackman's character not Christian Bale's.

I don't know so much as I was pissed, but it was an emotive letdown, while at the same time intellectually interesting. For me the experience went like this:

Throughout the film I expected the Tesla machine to be real magic, perhaps dark magic. In this sense subconsciously pegging the movie in the fantasy genre, when it flipped the switch to fantasy sci-fi, it was an emotional deflation. Thinking "oh" that's it. But that itself was a misdirection, because the twin reveal was the real feature.

However, the thing that makes the movie great, is the tale of 2 men's obsession and its consequences.

[–]Jynxo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's your fault you thought Tesla would bring magic in the movie. MAGIC. What the hell, man? He is a man of science.

[–]thraxicle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was fictional Tesla.

[–]demote 0 points1 point ago

A fictional tesla that casts spells instead of doing what amounts to magic with science would suck!

[–]thraxicle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. I really haven't a clue why I thought that magic was possible in that set up, just that I did.

[–]anamusedfrog 0 points1 point ago

This is an interesting take on the events of the film. It goes with the idea that the Tesla's machine never worked at all and that he was conning Angier for money.

My feeling is that it is proper to call it, as others have done here, science fiction. If the cloning was done by Merlin making incantations instead of Tesla building a machine, that would be fantasy and could properly be called a supernatural plot device.

Oh. I'm not really into the back stories that much. From what I'm familiar with it would seem they have scientific explanations (Spiderman, The Hulk, Iron Man, Batman all come to mind).

But at the same time it seems pretty common for people to say a superhero has supernatural abilities. I think they're taking the literal meaning of the parts of the word to mean super-normal. Here are the meanings according to one site: 1. Of or relating to existence outside the natural world.
2. Attributed to a power that seems to violate or go beyond natural forces.
3. Of or relating to a deity.
4. Of or relating to the immediate exercise of divine power; miraculous. 5. Of or relating to the miraculous.
I guess the second definition would make this use of supernatural acceptable so good on you for that.

Getting back to The Prestige though. The movie gives us a natural explanation, in the form of a machine built by Tesla (however vague on details that was), so I stand by it not being proper in that case. But as I already admitted, that's just me being pedantic.

Cheers.

I felt like that when reading the book. Hate to be that guy, but I didn't like the movie.

[–]excusemeplease 9 points10 points ago

Christopher Priest himself saw the movie and stated it to be one of the rare cases of when a movie surpasses the book.

saw the film three times as of January 5, 2007, and his reaction was "'Well, holy shit.' I was thinking, 'God, I like that,' and 'Oh, I wish I'd thought of that.

But I know what you mean. I remember people telling me that the Mel Gibson movie "We were Soldiers" was good. I read the book before for a class, and I have to say that that was the absolute worst movie I have ever seen in my life. I have seen Low-budget horror films and Steven Segal B-movies. But that movie ranks on the top of my list of ohmygod this is so bad.

There's something that happens when you watch a movie after reading the book. There's no more SurpRIses.

[–]metallink11 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I recall, Fight Club is another one of those rare movies where the author thought the movie was better then their own book.

[–]DisturbedPuppy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I remember the author joked about hating the movie because now no one was buying the books.

[–]Shalmander 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The crowd most likely to be interested in fight club wasn't exactly the reading group. Outside of the major plot with Tyler Durden, it wasn't anything we haven't seen before.

[–]ghostchamber 0 points1 point ago

There's something that happens when you watch a movie after reading the book..

With most people, they just get indignant and act like it was a total atrocity, much like you do with We Were Soldiers. The worst movie you have ever seen? Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? Even if you don't like it, saying it was the worst movie you have ever seen sounds like overzealous hatred. Talented cast, decent director, and an okay writer. It just did not come together terribly well.

[–]excusemeplease 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know right? it's crazy. I know it's a well respected movie as well, so the problem is solely with myself, not on the movie. Talented cast, great source material, great scores on websites. I know that it's a great movie.

It was the first movie I watched after reading the book, and I suppose I had all of these scenes illustrated in my head while reading the book. I paced the dialogue and illustrated the characters as I saw fit. And for some reason I just remember having such a negative reaction to watching the film, maybe because I didn't agree with the visualization of the story? Also, it didn't help that I didn't feel any suspense from knowing what was going to happen... the film just felt like a novelty tourist visit to see the "picture adaptation of the words."

=(

I generally have a pretty good taste in movies. But maybe it was something with that class. Another movie we watched that I hated was Last of the Mohicans (which I know is supposed to be very good). We were assigned a project to watch it in class and note every single mistake/illogical/ridiculous note in the movie... and that kind of poisoned the experience for me.

Maybe that teacher was just an asshole I dunno~~

[–]deejayalemus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just didn`t find the movie very gritty. Cast was great, acting was decent too. I am used to 80s vietnam flicks where the soldiers arent fresh faced rookies or at least not all of them. Everything seemed too clean about that film. Did not feel intense enough, I suppose. Would like to read the book though.

The book was so well crafted and written. It's taken from both magicians journals and each journal has its own specific writing style which is incredible to me. The book had some really well done twists and emotional moments that far surpass the movie. And the books end was just so awesome. It's really quite an amazing read, I couldn't like the film unless it captured the novels intricate structure and feel perfectly.

[–]Clyktose -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally it seemed a tiny bit predictable. It's been awhile, but I remember knowing for sure what was going on with one of the characters, the other I had a good guess. I need to re watch it though, because it's been too long. It was enjoyable, I just didn't find it totally mind blowing like some other movies are.

[–]Alwaysego 1 point2 points ago

I forget - is that the one with Tesla, or the other slightly more boring one?

you know when (like for many, with The Sixth Sense - although not me that time) you have caught the little misdirection at the beginning which means the entire rest of the film has now been laid bare for you and the "twist" ending cannot come soon enough?

happened to me on that one...
