Nobody said he was an atheist. He does work with the British Humanist Association though.

Why would God have to prevent all the bad things from happening to exist? Not every experience in life has to make you happy or get you off to benefit from it, or better yet to cause you to help others.

God wouldn't have to do that to exist, he's just saying it doesn't fit with the idea of a benevolent God which people extrapolate from nature's wonders.
