Honestly, when things start with "I swear this is a true story," that's usually code for "this isn't going to be anywhere near a factual story."

It was actually a pretty good AMA, just for Guy Who Knew a Girl Who Fucked Woody Harrelson in High School, not Woody himself.

Oddly enough tho, I remember another celebrity AMA from a few months back that went a similar path... exposure to past mistakes, everyone is merry about it.. I couldn't find out which one it was, tho.

[–]Hesperus 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So wait, what happened?

[–]RaindropBebop 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He didn't understand how to do an AMA, and the hivemind shat all over him for it. Seriously.

That and some allegation of him crashing someone's prom and having sex with one of the girls there. Sure, it makes for a good story, but the dude didn't even give any evidence that it was true other than starting his post off with "I swear this is a true story."

We'll be lucky if we get another, non-tech savvy celebrity to do an AMA with us again.

[–]CircumcisedSpine 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except that if you read his answers, it doesn't seem likely it was him. Go, read and tell me that his answer about previous movies could at all be consistent with his answers about Rampart.

Secondly, going to any sort of forum with fans asking questions and then telling them to stick to questions about the movie because "I consider my time valuable" is a great way to turn any room against you -- reddit or not. That is arrogant and condescending.

So, if it was him, he didn't know what he was getting into and was an arrogant, condescending prick. Or it was a PR stooge.

Either way, it went down in flames, as it should. A PR stooge shouldn't claim to be the person. And a celebrity shouldn't expect fans to want to be talked down to.

[–]YourACoolGuy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any PR isn't that stupid to answer questions like that. Their job is to make the person sound/look/appear awesome. I honestly believe that it was Woody answering all these questions, with his PR probably floating around not realizing what was happening. An hour into the shenanigans the PR finally saw what he was doing and took the computer from bad Woody and sent him to the corner for timeout.

[–]CircumcisedSpine 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who knows. We can only speculate. I think it was some low level PR flack that figured they could handle this "new media thing". Either way, he's either a tool or he had a tool pretending to be him. Neither needs to be an AMA.

[–]YourACoolGuy 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, I did enjoy his work in that movie where he played the blind telemarketer, though.

Seriously, today is the second day that I regret being a redditor. The first was when the hivemind accused a woman of lying after she claimed she was raped (based on circumstantial evidence and speculation), and fucking went to town insulting her and shit. I participated in that one to some extent and felt like a fucking jerk/douche afterwards when it turned out to be true.

Not going to make that mistake again.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I remember reading about that a day or two afterwards. 90% of the posts in AskReddit are either entirely made up or hugely exaggerated but no one gives a shit. Then occasionally they jump all over someone like the girl you're talking about.

Then again, coming to reddit for advice about rape is a bad idea in the first place. Or advice about any major life moments, for that matter.

[–]RaindropBebop 9 points10 points ago

Some people don't have a strong family/friend/social structure to turn to in times of need. Also, I'd assume that being raped is extremely difficult to talk about with people close to you. I'd rather get help anonymously, too.

There are a lot of counseling services available, some of which are free. I just don't think posting something super personal on the internet is a good idea.

[–]RaindropBebop 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh no, I agree with you. I was just saying I understand why people would come to reddit, especially if they are unable to find good, in-person anonymous services.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah it is understandable. There are also better places on reddit to bring up stuff like that, like suicidewatch or something (even though it's not suicide, they'd probably still be helpful).

[–]RaindropBebop 0 points1 point ago

So the original poster was a user named theoculous, who had posted in /r/twoxchromosomes that she had been sexually assaulted. She then later cross-posted to the now defunct /r/reddit.com saying she had been sexually assaulted along with a link to imgur showing a picture of her bruised/scratched face.

A user named I_FRIENDZONE_CATS who, for whatever reason, scoured through theoculous's comment history and found that she had a history of very skilled makeup artistry. Her skilled makeup artistry, along with a rage comic from theoculous's history (crafted months beforehand), the fact that she cross-posted about being assaulted, AND the fact that someone earlier that very day had lied about having cancer led I_FRIENDZONE_CATS to "be the tiniest bit skeptical" of the legitimacy of her assault.

Eventually, and due to the evidence brought up by I_FRIENDZONE_CATS, the hivemind collectively accused her of lying and attempting to "cry rape", as it were, in order to garner attention or get a man in trouble. It's going to be hard to separate now -- as people have deleted their posts or added posts after the truth was found out, etc. -- however, I can assure that the tone of the thread was quite toxic prior to theoculous commenting to the validity of her situation. theoculous was eventually able to confirm her situation, going so far as to make another post in /r/TwoXChromosomes with links to an inspector's business card, as well as a video showing her cleaning her wound.

Both I_FRIENDZONE_CATS and theoculous have since deleted their accounts. For what reason, I cannot be sure. I know they were both active in the months after the incident, however the deletions of their accounts could still be a result of the fiasco.

I still feel a little bad for I_FRIENDZONE_CATS. He literally only said he was "the tiniest bit skeptical", but still offered his condolences. Unfortunately, the wrath of /r/TwoXChromosomes was swift and absolute.

Related links/readings:

  1. Original /r/TwoXChromosomes post by theoculous
  2. Xpost to /r/reddit.com by theoculous
  3. Comment by I_FRIENDZONE_CATS to theoculous's post in /r/reddit.com [it has been edited, however the original message is still intact]
  4. Comment by purpleloki regarding theoculous's "related" rage comic
  5. Subsequent post in /r/TwoXChromosomes by thoculous showing proof that her situation was legitimate.

TL;DR I_FRIENDZONE_CATS found evidence that theoculous might be faking/making up the story of her assault. Hivemind blows up, bears fangs against theoculous. It turns out theoculous was telling the truth. /r/twoxchromosomes fired back against I_FRIENDZONE_CATS and others who commented negatively in the thread.

Reddit has been a victim of its own success. Especially after the whole SOPA protest and attention given to Reddit in the mainstream media recently we will see more and more 'non-tech savvy' celebrities attempting to harness the power of the hivemind. This is the end ladies and gentlemen - reddit is now on the radar or the mainstream media, expect more of this.

[–]FreeSammiches 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. That is why we have the voting system in place. Crap like this AMA will get destroyed but anyone that comes here on good faith and can play by the rules will be assimilated.

One of us. One of us. One of us.

If enough PR firms screw up this bad, it may make it into their trade magazines and they'll learn to adapt to our system better.

[–]CuriositySphere 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The voting system doesn't work. reddit may not like being taken advantage of and being advertised to, but it is absolutely terrible at recognizing when that is happening. Most of the celebrity AMAs are just like this one, only handled a little better. Done only for self-promotion, not saying anything interesting at all. I'm glad this one got shot down, but it would be better if they all were.

reddit is not your PR platform. People need to realize this.

Normal Reddit:

Wow I wish more celebrities did AMAs

When a celebrity does an AMA in a format that they don't like:

LOL FUCK THAT GUY WHAT A FAG LOLUZLLAA FUCK RAMPART U SUCK DWEEB GET A LIFE THIS IS AMA: ASK ME ANYHTING, BITCH, NOT AMAWRTTRMIP. DERP. NOOB DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO REDDIT.

And then you wonder why people don't want to do AMAs.

Sure, some people might be doing it solely to push their film/tv show/whatever, and might say something ridiculous like "Let's stick to Rampart." But you know what? Just downvote their shit and move on. Abusing/insulting them doesn't make other people want to do AMAs.

EDIT: I disliked his AMA as much as the next guy. Stop telling me how bad it was; I know how bad it was. That's why I downvoted it and moved on.

[–]RamsesFantor 28 points29 points ago

Who gives a shit about AMAs if they are just an attempt to exploit the Reddit user base? People don't NEED to be dicks, but I think its good for them to stand up for themselves if they feel misused.

[–]RaindropBebop 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who gives a shit about AMAs if they are just an attempt to exploit the Reddit user base?

Not me. I hated the format of his AMA, that's why I downvoted it. But when you're an abusive dick, you turn away legitimate people who were going to do AMAs right.

They don't want to risk the chance of fucking up, not doing an AMA "right", and get burned by the hivemind.

[–]Cheezfri 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats why anyone who does an AMA should know what AMAs are and what they stand for. AMA mean As me Anything, not Ask Me Almost Anything.

[–]RaindropBebop 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Stop. Seriously. I agree 100% with you. His AMA was bad. He should've known how to do one before hand.

What I don't agree with is the mindless harassment that served no fucking purpose other than to make reddit look moronic and uninviting.

[–]iamyourdad 6 points7 points ago

If a star was considering doing an AMA like Harry did, just a shameless ad, those AMAs are certainly not welcome and should NOT be encouraged to come on the site. I'm not sure why you would want those AMAs.

[–]_meraxes 1 point2 points ago

I'm so annoyed with how you're being downvoted in this thread. I wasn't a part of the aforementioned AMA, but I've been on reddit for years and I get the gist. You don't deserve the negative points.

[–]RaindropBebop 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I honestly don't really care about the karma (let them throw reddiquette to the wind, they already did in Woody's post). As long as people read what I'm saying. The pitchforks and torches are out today because of the recency of the Woody fiasco, but tomorrow maybe they'll remember what I said when they're in an /r/iama thread.

I mean, seriously, I get it. He did a terrible AMA, had no clue what he was doing, and thought it was a place to plug his movie. In reality, it's a give-and-take. You spend some of your time (a few hours) with us answering our silly questions about whatever, and at the end you get to say "Well, Reddit, it's been fun. Thanks for the great questions. Oh, and don't forget to watch my move [insert title] in theatres this [insert date]!" He didn't understand it, and did it wrong. I get it. I downvoted him for it.

But the behavior of the commenters was extremely brash and immature, and the level of douchbaggery in that thread was something I'd expect only from 4chan. I mean, that prom story, really? I can't believe Redditors believed that shit. Regardless of how the commenters felt, though, that behavior is not good for the health of /r/iama. Why would someone want to do an AMA when they run the risk of being alienated and shit upon by people who don't even know them.

[–]_meraxes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not about your points so much as the general trend of votes on this. I wish people could be more objective.

I have now read through the WH IAMA and I'm fairly convinced that it was nothing but a PA/PR stunt. Yay reddit controversy.

That keeps AMA kind of hard-core

That keeps more people from doing AMAs.

Again, let me reiterate my position. I hate absolutely no problem with the current format of AMAs. I love it.

What I have a problem with is when someone, like Woody, doesn't understand what's going on, think's it's just a PR stint, and then get's utterly shit on by the hivemind.

Just downvote his shit. The more you harass someone, the less likely other people will want to try and do AMAs.

Maybe IAMA should add specific, illicit instructions/guidelines for celebrities, or people who have never been to reddit before.

[–]Soundimus 1 point2 points ago

I agree completely with this statement. I just did a quick glance to see if he was even answering questions. After i found out he barely answering questions i moved along. You can't do a real AMA in 15 minutes.

[–]CuriositySphere 0 points1 point ago

But I don't want celebrities to do AMAs. They're stupid. AMAs should focus on something unique. Something we can learn about. Celebrity AMAs are all "I'M A HUGE FAN OF YOUR WORK AND I HAVE NO REAL QUESTION" and "WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WORK WITH SOME OTHER CELEBRITY?" Who cares?

[–]RaindropBebop 0 points1 point ago
