As an American I agree our standards of measure make no sense!

Like most things on facebook, this was already on reddit.

But to point out the UK uses miles not KM.

As a rule, if you see it on facebook, it has already been on reddit.

Or, more accurately, if you did not personally write, draw, photograph, or otherwise create it, it's already been on reddit.

I knew our system here was queer, but I've never seen it quite this clear...ly.

Totaly agree. You also forgot to mention pints and galons VS liters and milliliters and acres VS hectares. I hate this stupid system.

Funny story: The official definitions of Standard and Imperial measures are all backed against the Metric system. (1 foot = 30.68cm)

Funnier story: The Metric system was originally based on 1/10,000,000th of the poorly-measured distance between the North Pole and the Equator, along the line between Dunkirk and Barcelona. After 6 years of improper measuring, and poor correction for the Earth's oblateness, they came up with the meter. They then based all the measures on the meter. (Except time, which is hard to measure without outright saying, "This measure of time was chosen at complete random")

The meter was later redefined as 1/3,000,000th the distance light travels in one second, but it was mysteriously unchanged in actual length. Because in the 1980s, we couldn't observe, accurately, how far light traveled in 1/3,000,000th of a second. So, Imperial and SAE are arbitrary systems based on an arbitrary system. (Arguably, based, itself, on an arbitrary system, since seconds have been around, as the length of time we recognize as a second, long before the definition regarding radioactive decay came about)

Most of this I can agree with. The US needs to switch to metric like whoa.

However, it makes perfect fucking sense to have the month before the date when you write it in standard form. Today is February 3, 2011.

or the third of february, 2011. In many (most I know) languages putting month before day is just stupid. Also, sorting and comparing time gets much easier with the time ordered after strictly increasing or decreasing units. So, no, an english pronunciation quirk shouldn't really be what decides :)

They brought this up on the Rooster Teeth Podcast... I agree with what they said; the US should switch to the metric system but the world should switch to Farenheit because when measuring weather, it's based more on humans than on water. You see, we use from 0 to 100 with Farenheit when dealing with weather, Celcius can only from around 29 to 48 (assumption), so the other number are useless unless water boiling is a huge ass sport in your area.

Well, actually you have the convenient 0 point where water freezes. Which is very handy, because you can then easily see when the roads might suddenly freeze over due to icy rain, or whether it will just be snow, or really, really cold (no, it's not actually cold before it hits -15C, or 5F ). And much beyond 40 is rare (a bit above 100 farenheit). Also, it is quite nice that it is compatible with the kelvin scale (the one used in physics and chemistry), with the only difference being what number you begin to count on. Since 1 step on the celsius scale = 1 step on the kelvin scale, all you have to do is add or subtract 273.something . But for daily use something around 0 is a bit handier to work with than something that ranges between 240 - 320, although it is really trivial and just one more thing to memorize if you want to go about it that way :)

Kelvin is even more logical than Celsius. We should just switch to that.

Also Celsius is based on an arbitrarily picking the freezing and boiling point of water and is a completely random scale. Kelvin just picked a different freezing point.

a meter is also a random length based on nothing and the metric system is based on that.

0 °C was defined as the freezing point of water and 100 °C was defined as the boiling point of water, both at a pressure of one standard atmosphere with mercury being the working material. a meter it is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum in 1 ⁄ 299,792,458 of a second

A thousand millimeters are a meter, A thousand meters is a kilometer.

12 inches is a foot, 3 feet is a yard, 1760 yards are a mile.

In the metric system they are equal, but in the american there just random. In the metric they increase by 1000 every time, but in the Other they just incerase at random. same with tempratures and gram's and punds.
