That's too cute. There's no need for that much cute. Send it away.

Not 'shopped or taxidermied. Rats can be little hams in front of the camera. Mine were always sniffing and looking right at the lens. The rat in these shots is a dumbo rat which means it has round low-set ears for extra cuteness. Here's one of my favorite shots of my rat Cornelius, who was a dumbo double rex rat. Here's one of Cornelius with my other rat Alonzo, a dumbo hairless rat. They were both totally cool with me putting bows on them and just chilled in the comfy set I while I snapped a hundred photos.

Hmm. They're either shopped or taxidermied. See other pics by the same artist such as the one in which they're posed as playing musical instruments.

Edit: OK, they're actually gnawing on the various objects, which might have bits of apple stuck to them or something. The band is described as a "collage" of separate shots.

[–]meowserz 8 points9 points ago

Looked at the link, they look alive to me (they are gnawing on the instruments, you see the photographer's hand hold up an apple to one of the rats and he sniffs it etc)

[–]directhex 6 points7 points ago

You don't need to kill a rat for it to be cute in a photo, y'know.

There's a second photographer who lucks out on these shots, Jessica Florence. Her sets are on Flickr.

[–]sulayman 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, it's definitely not luck. As a former rat-owning photographer, I can tell you that there isn't enough luck in the world to catch the shots Jessica gets. This is all work and patience.

This is as true as true can be.

Rodents do what rodents do. If you want a picture of them doing what you want, you need to figure out how to make it fit into what they are going to do.

Sorry for the crap quality, but here is the result of half an hour, fifteen years ago for a stupid birthday card for someone.

Try, just try to keep a hat on a gerbil's head sometime, without resorting to excessive force or inhumane measures (and I would count most adhesives as that).

You can have your happiness back. The general consensus is that they're not dead, but rather nibbling on the instruments.

From the instruments picture: "This is a collage from 5 different photo's. Photo's are mine, but the collage was made by a friend".

It looks like she put a bit of food on each instrument.

funny how so many people would shrill and shriek at the sight of a rat...

. .. ...

Is is really necessary to fear rodents? (when in the modern world rodent disease isn't a rational concern.). I mean really... REALLY?!?! Does anyone differentiate between rats, hampsters, and guinea pigs?!?!

Even bunnies are rodents right, squirrels are cute too huh?

Hudson: Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?
Gorman: All we know is that there's still no contact with the colony, and that a lagomorph may be involved.

Gorman: A lagomorph.
Hicks: It's a bunnyhunt.

they have four incisors in the upper jaw (not two, as in the Rodentia);

so close...

:)

Also TIL Rodents have a penis bone...

the penis contains no bone (baculum), unlike in rodents.

when in the modern world rodent disease isn't a rational concern.

It's not any less of a concern than it was 500 years ago. They carry over 30 diseases, some of which can be lethal and/or debilitating.

Flesh eating bacteria, rabbies, tetanus, a host of parasites, etc.

[–]tangledlight 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but no one (at least the smart people) is running off to trap and keep wild rats as pets.

Pet rats, called fancy rats, actually have a fairly large fanbase. There are registries, shows, and even breeders. They're very intelligent and, to be honest, act like tiny pet dogs. You can teach them tricks and they like to cuddle.

Wild rats can carry diseases, just like wild dogs, cats, birds, and everything else. Domesticated rats, who have not come into contact with any infected animals, do not.

[–]corndograt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well said. I had a rat who was so sweet and friendly he could turn anyone into a rat lover within two minutes of contact.

[–]tangledlight 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's awesome. :)

I owned pet rats for years. They do best in pairs or more, they're incredibly social little guys. My girls were always less cuddly, but almost all of my boys turned into huge lap-potatoes

[–]Dream_the_Unpossible 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because wild rats carry disease..

[–]nox_fox 17 points18 points ago

Exactly. A pet rat and a sewer rate are as different as a house cat and a mountain lion.

pet rats are completely different than wild ones. I love pet rats and I've had a few. I live and work at a storage facility however and combating wild rats is a constant issue. They carry disease and just generally cause chaos. Just the other day one of them chewed through a rubber fitting on a water pipe and flooded my room.

[–]Xanathos7 0 points1 point ago

Rabbits aren't rodents. Rats these days still carry the same diseases as they used to, just not the ones kept in a clean environment.

[–]JoinRedditTheySaid 0 points1 point ago

My pet rats died last year. Miss them more than I thought I would! They have so much personality but such short lifespans.

[–]corndograt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know. I think the short lifespan is the only drawback to rats. I lost my Cornelius at the beginning of December three months shy of his second birthday. I was completely devastated. He was the best. :(

[–]chrysus 2 points3 points ago

FYI There are not by Ellen van Deelen, they're by a great photographer named Jessica Florence. These specific photos are of her latest rats, Duck and Worm. You can even see that exact image from above, here

Her rats are entirely alive, and she usually poses them while they sleep. She's been doing this for years and has gotten amazingly good at it. I can definitely see some resemblance between hers and some of Ellen's work, but these are assuredly live, loved ratties.

EDIT: Apparently Duck and Worm had to be put to sleep a couple weeks ago. :(

[–]GiPwner 3 points4 points ago

I'm all for scientific development, but it bothers me that this is what they experiment on.

[–]lukeatron 7 points8 points ago

But it would be ok to do the same things to something uglier?

[–]frogofthebucket 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it wouldn't be. I don't know why you would presume that people only feel empathy for cute things.

[–]lukeatron 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm all for scientific development, but it bothers me that this is what they experiment on.

Emphasis added. GiPwner is making a distinction between rats and other things. The main topic of conversation here is the cuteness. What else am I to assume the delineating factor is? He/she is stating that there is something making experimentation on rats "bad" but implying experimenting on other things would not be. So there must be some property of rats that, in his or her mind, makes them a bad choice for experimentation that is not possessed by other things. What else should I assume he/she is talking about?

I don't know why you construed my statement as expressing some broader assessment of people's ability to feel empathy. That said, of course people feel more empathy for things they aren't repulsed by. This is hardly a novel idea.

[–]frogofthebucket 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Emphasis added. GiPwner is making a distinction between rats and other things.

It's more likely that he's just generalizing because the over-whelming majority of all test subjects are rats and/or mice.

[–]lukeatron 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't get all uppity about your assumptions about my assumptions when you're doing the same thing with a slightly different conclusion then. It was an unclear statement with multiple possible interpretations. The idea that you have a better idea of his intent than I, or any one else, is a tad egotistical, don't you think?

[–]frogofthebucket 1 point2 points ago

[–]EnderofDragon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it clearly says that those were 5 separate photos combined into one. Rats are very curious and if you give them something they will hold it and turn it around and nibble on it. Its only a matter of time before it looks like they are holding the instruments correctly.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only way to truly understand how smart rats are is to own them as pets.

Otherwise people treat them as they would a wild snake, spider, or scorpion... with fear and misunderstanding.

[–]BridgetteBane 0 points1 point ago

[–]addedpulp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to have pet rats. They were very intelligent and affectionate once they learned to appreciate you (and if you're their provider of both food and attention, they will).

However, two slightly horrifying stories...

The lesser of the two, I found a large cricket once and read that they love live crickets, so I handed it to them. They sat at the door of their cage, begging adorably for a treat... and as soon as I dropped it between them, they tore it in half and devoured it. It was like a tiny horror movie.

And then the really eerie one... my roommate was supposed to watch them while I was away for work for a week. He didn't. They were smart enough to unlatch the door to their cage, and he was afraid to pick them up and put them back, so they ate anything in my room not bolted down, including eating a cartoonish hole in the wall that they lived in for the week. The eerie part: they ate through every bottle of medicine in my bathroom (I had one attached to my apartment bedroom) and all the contents in them, medicine that would have killed me had I eaten it, and were completely unfazed. I gave them up for adoption shortly after.

Hopefully mine will all survive the day. But I wish you well. Remember, it's pictures like that that make you want to do it efficiently, painlessly and in the most humane way possible.
