Ok let's make this clear, people don't become atheist because they read the bible. It's because they have a greater understanding of the world with a post-Enlightenment grasp of the scientific method and an education that gave them knowledge derived from said method. They then read the bible and see that it just doesn't comply with what is known about the universe and observed morality.

TL;DR Epistemologically the Bible just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Reading the Bible is just another way to say that you have scrutinized the bible.

[–]girldinosaurs 7 points8 points ago

You're absolutely right, but I think "they read the bible" is often used as a short-hand for what you said. At least, I hope it is.

[–]Genericname42 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is for me. Imagine explaining what runtotheabyss said to a fundie? Do you really think he/she would understand any of that?

[–]girldinosaurs 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One does not simply explain to a fundie.

[–]runtotheabyss 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, I've tried and when I realize that someone can't wrap their head around the concept I just leave them alone. If they're that trapped in their paradigm... you can't argue with crazy.

I'd like to learn more, could you put this on a pamphlet and hold weekly meetings with singing, and threats?

[–]embrigh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you inferring that reading the bible doesn't make one leave Christianity? I can understand that it wouldn't necessarily make you an Atheist since you may believe in perhaps another religion, but I'm interested in a clarification.

[–]runtotheabyss 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To answer your question simply, yes reading the Bible doesn't necessarily make one leave Christianity behind.

I don't really understand where you need clarification. In a religion people use their religious texts to educate and indoctrinate people into the religion. This is why you don't see Jesuit priests or nuns becoming atheist when they go to Seminary to learn about the Bible. To leave Christianity or another religion behind you need information from a different pool of knowledge. So when atheists say "reading the Bible cover to cover is sure to make you an atheist" which is what this OP is implying, that isn't true unless the person has a different well of knowledge to pull from and compare the Bible to.

I can't read the title of the book he is reading. All i can see is that he is reading. Expanding your data base and processing information is what gets you beyond superstitious nonsense.

[–]tongshilaoshima 8 points9 points ago

I know this is how I turned from that terrible religion. After three books I started doubting. After five, I was all, "Fuck this shit".

I'd say that being scared as fuck of post-death oblivion is part of human nature.

[–]CoryJames 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When human's became self aware, we were faced with the fact that we are going to die. We got scared. So we made up god. the end.

[–]sn1p3rb8 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's all well and good, but a larger part of being human is using intelligence and willpower to ignore our baser instincts. We should be updating our worldview, not suppressing it though centuries old dogma.

[–]blastovore 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ignore... You mean "keep [our baser instincts] check". Instincts be there for a reason.

No, that's just a really bad study. It's not good science at all. Just because something is put out by a university doesn't make it good. It didn't have a control group at all - kids whom had never heard of god.

[–]saviorOfKings 3 points4 points ago

The only reason he seems to look away from this Book (presumably the Holy Bible, King James Edition XVIXV) is that he is tainted by an ungodly presence of the room. Ernie's rabid masturbation, a dastardly sin (as told in Psalms 3:14), is subliminally placing impure thoughts into Bert's head. The mere sight of another man's Penis is a sin, (Psalms 9:36) and the sight does not have to be visual: contact with another man's Penis via any of the 6 senses (being touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight, prayer) is Homosexual and you will burn in Hell. Do not take these things out of context. I do not take these things lightly. Amen
