Ok let's make this clear, people don't become atheist because they read the bible. It's because they have a greater understanding of the world with a post-Enlightenment grasp of the scientific method and an education that gave them knowledge derived from said method. They then read the bible and see that it just doesn't comply with what is known about the universe and observed morality.

TL;DR Epistemologically the Bible just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Reading the Bible is just another way to say that you have scrutinized the bible.

The only reason he seems to look away from this Book (presumably the Holy Bible, King James Edition XVIXV) is that he is tainted by an ungodly presence of the room. Ernie's rabid masturbation, a dastardly sin (as told in Psalms 3:14), is subliminally placing impure thoughts into Bert's head. The mere sight of another man's Penis is a sin, (Psalms 9:36) and the sight does not have to be visual: contact with another man's Penis via any of the 6 senses (being touch,taste, smell, hearing, sight, prayer) is Homosexual and you will burn in Hell.
