Those are Sand Tiger Sharks (Carcharias taurus), also called Grey Nurse sharks in some parts of the world. You can mainly tell by the thin ragged teeth which don't allow the shark to close their mouths fully. Yes, I am a "sharkologist" and strangely enough I've been swimming with about a dozen of them with a tampon in. But it wasn't a Tampax, I call shenanigans!!!

[–]cw7585 96 points97 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure why a dozen sharks would be using tampons, but I'm upvoting this as informative anyhow.

You just reminded me of a story my mum told me: when she was about 14 she went fishing with her dad and they caught a grey nurse shark who they lugged in to the boat, I can't recall if they gutted it or it just gave birth but suddenly there were baby sharks all over the place. I wish they had a photo of that moment... I'm going to get her to retell me that story, I know I've missed something. The end. * edit, I pretty much had it right except that someone on the boat donked it on the head with something to kill it and she guesses that it spontaneously aborted the 20 or more shark babies... what a delightful story.

[–]Kuibata 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They would have mostly aborted themselves anyways. Out of every litter, only 2 grey nurse sharks survive, one from each uterus. The first one hatched in the uterus goes around and eats all the other fetuses before they can get strong enough.

That's the general consensus. Think about it, people investigate things with their hands and even their teeth in the case of young children. A shark only has his mouth to test if something's edible or not, they basically just have to grab it and hope for the best. If they don't like it, they release it and go about their business. It may be just a "test bite" but humans are fragile creatures, and that's sometimes all it takes. Sharks, however, are built to withstand getting bitten a lot in their lives, especially females.

[–]ShoujoShinobi 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, Professor K is that why shark bite victims are always bitten and released instead of chewed up? The shark is just trying to figure out what this weird new creature is and if it's yummy?

[–]Kuibata 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, you don't hear a lot of multiple bite stories. The victim sometimes gives this bullshit story of "fending them off" but really the shark just didn't give a shit when the guy tasted awful.

With having "shark week" every month for 20+ years, I hope to fuck I am too.

[–]xebo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Quick question: Why are there not safety measures in place to avoid this situation?

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm placing you in the same category of people who swim with sharks while wounded. It seems unnecessarily unsafe.

[–]Kuibata 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are, it's called don't swim in their home if you want to avoid it 100%. Otherwise, most attacks occur in murky waters where the sharks senses are obscured even more. There have been studies on different colors and materials, etc to try and see which deter sharks, but not every species is the same. While many sharks were deterred by the black and white striped wetsuits that resembled sea snakes, some were actually attracted to it. So there's no 100% guarantee to never get bit. We like to tell people though, that you're more likely to get killed by a coconut than a shark. So then why aren't there preventative coconut measures in place? That's the real question.

As for the unsafe on my part, other than have a few sharks bolt because they were scared and risk running into me, I've never really been in any immediate harms way in the 1000s of dives I've done. I'd be more scared (and more likely to die) driving to work than actually working.

[–]xebo -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I again apologize, as I have no experience with sharks. Hopefully my questions don't offend.

Are you saying that blood does not attract sharks, or incite them to attack?

Would someone who worked with bears or lions tend to them while bleeding? I'd expect not, for the same reason children are told not to handle snakes after touching mice. Regardless of your track record, sharks are hunters, and they are attracted by blood. I highly recommend you no longer swim with them while menstruating.

[–]Kuibata 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I appreciate your concern, but blood does not "incite them to attack". Sure they may investigate it if they are hungry but I don't dive with them in the dark or in other conditions where they wouldn't be able to clearly tell that what they're investigating is not a wounded fish. Sharks are big huge babies, they are all offense and no defense. So if something looks big enough to possible cause them harm back, ie the size of a person, they are usually pretty wary of it. Most people who are bitten are not fully under the water. Shark attacks are rare as it is, shark attacks on a scuba diver are even rarer. It's usually people wading, floating, or surfing.

Also, I'd be silly for me to stop going in while menstruating but still occasionally chum the waters before we get in to make sure some show up. lol :)

[–]thechristiner 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is precisely the case, people are not on the menu for sharks. They can certainly smell human blood, but they don't care about it.

Now if you're spear fishing and have a big tasty bleeding fish on your spear, that can definitely attract an interested and hungry shark.

I'm no sharkologist but I'm pretty certain those are not 'harmless nurse sharks.' I actually believe those are bull sharks which are the sharks most likely to attack humans. Nurse sharks have a relatively flat body and a brownish color whereas bull sharks have the arch in their back and coloring as seen in the add. Also, I don't think nurse sharks ever get this big.

This is what a mouth of a nurse shark looks like. I'm fairly sure those are not nurse sharks. Nurse sharks are bottom feeders (i think), those sharks in the picture would have trouble doing that with those mouths.

Some people (apparently the discovery channel included) call sand tiger sharks 'grey nurse sharks'. This is why we have scientific nomenclature, because common names are downright confusing!

[–]Runnnnnnnnnn 2 points3 points ago*

They are not Nurse sharks, though they are mostly harmless sharks.

These are the generally harmless Sand Tiger Sharks (not the same as Tiger Sharks) otherwise known as Ragged Tooth Sharks. They are typically the kind you find in aquariums because they are mean looking.

Source: I am a technical diver, and apart of the dive team at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center.

Here is a link to a clip of a video I took a few months ago of a Sand Tiger from about 2.5 feet away.

There are nurse sharks later on in the video, specifically around the 1:30ish mark, as well if you would like a comparison. (I don't get any ad-revenue for views on youtube, I'm not that big of a deal).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Sand tiger sharks are known as grey nurse sharks in other parts of the world.

[–]Runnnnnnnnnn 1 point2 points ago

Yes, Grey Nurse, Blue Nurse even in some places, Ragged Tooth and Sand Tiger in other areas. Not to be confused with Nurse Sharks though. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's possible that GoochyBandana is from Australia or similar, where grey nurse sharks are the sharks we have with 'nurse' in their name - no other nurse sharks here.

[–]Runnnnnnnnnn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but I'm not sure I can agree with calling a grey nurse shark a nurse shark simply because an actual nurse shark is not indigenous to their part of the world. No harm in in making a simple correction, I feel it would be more harmful to not spread a little knowledge.

Women, serious question here...

would it be possible for women to go for a swim (say in a public pool) without bleeding out during your period? if it is possible, please break down as to what to use, say tampons or pads etc., and how to use it.

bonus question, how does it feel to have sex during periods? would any of the men-woman feel differently, is it pleasurable? what is the aftermath, bloody bed, perhaps, but are they easy to clean? :|

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The last part of your comment makes me doubt it is a serious question, but I will answer anyway.

It is easy to swim etc while menstruating, all you need is a tampon. Shove it in there and you're good to go. If your period is extremely heavy and you don't change tampons often, then you may be in danger of very slight blood escaping.

Period sex is awesome, many girls are horny as hell during and orgasms help to relieve cramps! Just have sex with a towel underneath and it's no problem.

Not actually true. Sharks don't give a fuck about human blood, it doesn't smell like anything they'd want to eat.

I scuba dive all the time on the rag, and so do all my female friends. There would be a LOT more dive related shark incidents if they cared about human blood.

[–]skyylineddrive 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was implying the blood didn't matter, since she'd probably be flailing around enough in a pool of sharks that they'd go after her for the movement. Tiger sharks are quite aggressive, so she wouldn't last more than a few minutes in a pool of those tough bastards.

And wow, I am thinking some morbid thoughts tonight.

Probably not in visibility like that. Tigers go after things that look like seals and turtles, hence why surfers get attacked generally when conditions are murky.

With your knowledge of sharks, you should also join our murderous little group of two. We'll call ourselves something involving sharks and being a trio. It'll be grand.

[–]thechristiner 0 points1 point ago

Sounds good, I love sharks. To get them involved in anything murderous though we're going to need some tasty fish or turtles.

[–]skyylineddrive 0 points1 point ago

Turtles will be the awesome sidekicks to the sharks. Tasty fish shall be acquired! Also, superheroes in need of a good shark-tank-dunking.

This is funny unless you grew up surfing in the Red Triangle, in which case, great whites are no laughing matter. For those who know what I'm talking about, I earned my spurs originally as a Sonoma County kid surfing Bodega and parts both immediately north and south.

Back story:

Bob and Julie wanted to go on vacation off the coast of Florida for the week. Sadly, Julie had an unwelcome visitor. Distressed with his wife's constant bitching, Bob devised a plan to be rid of her. Bob decided to take Julie on a snorkeling trip. Knowing Julie's monthly visitor would attract sand sharks, Bob let Julie go in first while he sat in the boat. Much to Bob's dismay, Julie was wearing Tampax.

Also, tampons are OVERPRICED. Jesus God It makes me so mad!!

Maybe it's just because I grew up watching Shark Week and they pushed this message very hard, but, I can not stand when sharks are used in advertising like this. It promotes an unnecessary fear of the animal, and I find it disgusting.

This reminds me about when I was about 11 and my sister was 13, we went Myrtle Beach on a family vacation. She had never been to the ocean and she had her period that week. I fucked with her the whole ride there about how sharks were going to smell her and try to eat her. She never got more than knee deep in the ocean. Ahahahaha!

Those are Sand Tiger Sharks, also known as Grey Nurse Sharks and Ragged-Tooth Sharks. Although they look scary, their teeth are designed for catching fish and they would only attack a human if cornered with no way out.
