Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Thanks for the image. I was initially convinced that it was a decent photo-shop. Those fires were terrible. Hundreds, maybe thousands, died in Moscow and the surrounding areas from smoke inhalation. Terrible.

Those fires were terrible. Hundreds, maybe thousands, died in Moscow and the surrounding areas from smoke inhalation. Terrible.

WTF are you talking about?! Moscow is 1000 kilometers away from Volgogradskaya Oblast.

[–]pktchort 0 points1 point ago

There were massive fires during the summer and early fall of that year. This general span of time is what I am referring to. Use the google if you are still plagued by doubt.

I also remember the images of smogged Moscow quite well. I also remember worrying for recent acquaintances of mine who lived not far from the Domodedovo metro station. Are you aware of the distance that smoke can travel from wildfires of that magnitude?

[–]trolltrolltrolld 0 points1 point ago

Dang. I thought this was from the wildfires in Bastrop, TX last fall. There were a few poles that this happened to as well

Maybe they don't need it on a day like that, but what about during high winds and ice on the lines, or both? Also, if you used less poles, the lines would droop. And if they drooped, the wire would have to be held up with more tension to accommodate for the sagging. That extra tension on the lines plus harsh weather conditions probably means more down lines, power outages, and maintenance costs. It's probably more realistic and cost-effective to put more poles up.

[–]Magrippinho 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

... and if one pole gets messed up, like the one in the picture, the others can easily pick up the slack. Sounds like a reasonable safety measure all around.

The whole pole or top is probably treated with fire retardant as a secondary precaution beyond the ceramic insulators. The treatment would have been less effective lower down where there was more heat.

Many newer poles in fire-prone areas already are in many countries. Poles can last 25-50 years though, so most probably aren't.

You don't belong on the power line, you're a ram

[–]brad2235 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the first picture the car looks like its caught on communications lines of some type. The power is slightly higher. It appears to be coming down from a transformer out of picture then going off to the right. I can say that primary powerlines (the ones at the very top) can generally hold the weight of a wooden pole by themselves. Sometimes times a damaged pole can simply be removed and repaired at a later date provided no wires change direction at it.

[–]17-40 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really depends on where this is. If it's somewhere that gets substantial wind or ice loading, then quite a bit, since that is accounted for in the design.

I worked as a cable guy for a couple years. One time I was called out for a disconnect and the notes on the workorder simply stated that the residence had burned down. When I got there, there was indeed a black trailer-sized patch of ground at the address. Over at the pole, the cable was hanging almost straight down into the bushes, where someone had tossed all the excess. I felt like an archaeologist as I pulled it out of the bushes a few feet at a time. First there was a bit of blistering on the outer jacket, followed by it melting off. The shielding quickly turned black, and then further down it had melted away to reveal that the dieletric was also gone. The conductor was actually fairly intact for quite a while longer, but it eventually ended in a brittle black char.

That's why they string the wires between the poles, to keep them from falling over.

This is kind of saddening to me as a technological history buff. These are not power lines but old-school open-wire telephone lines. There are very few lines like this still in existence. One would hope that this line is still in service and will be repaired, but many times these historic lines are abandoned in place and those involved are just letting nature take its course.

One prominent open-wire line that died in the not too distant past was the approximately 20 mile run from Halloran Summit, CA to the Mojave Phone Booth - one of the first viral phenomena on the Internet. At the height of its popularity the phone rang constantly with calls from all over the world. Sadly, the NPS had it out for the booth (it was on land turned over to the NPS by the California Desert Protection Act, creating the Mojave National Preserve) and had it ripped out. The line is still there but deteriorating, and there is a place where fire came through and burned some cross-arms (though the poles didn't end up like the one here.)

One interesting thing about long open-wire runs is they act as a VLF radio antenna. While conversing on the Mojave phone, you could hear pings and pops on the line that were caused by lightning strikes hundreds or thousands of miles away!

When I was younger, I attended some faith seminar where they used this exact photo as evidence that Jesus was watching over the area that the fire hit.

I asked "Why couldn't he have just put it out?"

No answer.
