Credit where credit is due, this was created by fellow redditor jerfoo

Thank you TheIvoryNun and nbouscal for your loyalty :)

But no need to attack the OP... I'm happy it's come back for a second round... and happy that it made top post again!

I missed this the first time around, and it is completely and utterly awesome - A strong analogy that is both beautiful in its simplicity and no more confrontational than it needs to be.

I have a few things along these lines that I plan to make, this is now my over-ambitious benchmark :)

Why is this not at the top? Reposts are one thing, but reposting OC from a fellow redditor without credit? I mean, come on.

[–]wolffml 2 points3 points ago

No kidding. I looked at jerfoo's account to see if he had responded.

Chances are the OP didn't know who it came from. Not everyone browses Reddit enough to know that. Thanks to IvoryNun for pointing it out though. It really is a great image.

[–]jf_ftw 150 points151 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perfect analogy of the "god of the gaps" argument

[–]23canaries 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not sure this is really accurate at all - we have far more missing pieces of a model of the universe that is comprehensive that is represented in that cute little puzzle. but a good analogy of faith none the less

[–]Xanzent 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if we're only at the "It's beginning to look nothing like the box" phase, it's still scarily accurate of the mentality of those who choose to turn a blind eye to reason in their faith.

[–]Garmose 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"What's [on] the box!?" has never sounded so profound before.

[–]thunderbrand 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]punchingtrees 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those who turn a blind eye to reason in their faith sure do give a bad reputation to those who maintain both faith and reason. That's one thing that troubles me about anti-theism, it tends to lump everyone together as if faith and reason are mutually exclusive.

[–]Xanzent 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is the popular religions are constructed in such a way to reward such behavior. You can't subscribe to most religions without sacrificing at least some reason for faith.

If there exists religions where one can pursue reason unimpeded by faith, then we're not worried about them, because we'll never feel their effects on our lives.

[–]Volpethrope 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The comic isn't implying that "complete puzzle" = "total knowledge of universe" = "that's where we are." The completed puzzle is the point at which it is 100% certain that nothing on the box is correct.

[–]yamancool63[!] 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it seems to be saying "We know enough that we can with much certainty conclude that the box is wrong."

[–]zops 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read that so many times to make sure I didn't miss subtle difference.

[–]kalimashookdeday 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you. I totally agree with the OP. I agree with the overall message but I think that similarly you are also quite correct. This puzzle can be used with those on the other side too who also claim to know too much.

We[humans] just found out the known universe actually only makes up about 5% of what we thought makes up 100%. Similar to the example picture in the OP, it would be having 5 pieces of the puzzle (out of 100) and denying there could be a duck because of "lack of evidence".

What is the other 95%? As far as I know it's made up of giant lizards with unicorns growing out of their asses and leprechauns shining their shoes while a teapot orbits it all.

Except for the faithful bunny stabbing the non-believer. I was really confused by this ending.

[–]Phallic 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except for the part where there's only one missing piece at the end.

A more accurate analogy would be that the further we dig into the puzzle box, the more pieces we realise there are. And that some of the pieces are in shapes we can barely comprehend, let alone put in place. And that we slowly start to realise that there may be so many pieces that humanity will never put the whole thing together.

[–]TheSilverFalcon 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, this metaphor is 100% accurate. All sciences are the study of Winne the Pooh. Little known fact.

[–]alwaysreadthename 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. You're as lost as the fundamentalists if you think we have anything close to most of the answers about the universe. That being said, we have enough pieces to know that the concept of god is asinine.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does it reflect faith or stubbornness

Yes

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Think of the percentage of Americans who refuse to accept evolution as a valid theory because it goes against what they've been told or have read. These types of blinders to reality goes beyond simple stubbornness and faith has much to do with it.

[–]Eist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except science, or the truth, is not a puzzle that is completable. It's a never ending puzzle that we just add to in order to increase our understanding of how this world works. This is the fallacy of the "puzzle" theory. There is no last piece, so there is no resolution.

[–]TooMuchTony 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No OP is missing the part where the rabbit that just believes the duck image first tries to lure the other one, then scare, then beat, before they just burn the poor rabbit just for looking at the bits themselves.

[–]Karmamechanic 3 points4 points ago

This is actually about blind faith. Faith is merely trust.

[–]nondescriptuser 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And this is merely mincing words. Explain the difference between blind faith in a personal god, for which there is no evidence, and plenty of evidence to suggest the contrary, and faith-trust in a personal god, for which there is no evidence, and plenty of evidence to suggest the contrary.

There is no religion of a personal god that does not require putting blinders on, no matter how much you fuck around with abstract nouns.

[–]jftitan 10 points11 points ago

Some ducks.... YES, Its fucking strange, but it happens. I had a pen with 12 ducks, and eventually all the females died off (it happens) Duck Pet Owners experience it. Gay Ducks. I had Gay Ducks. After about 8 years of having ducks, I can swear to it... Ducks can be gay.

Fuck you, I still enjoyed hanging out with my gay ducks. Quacking it around all day. Feeding the goat as well. The goat wasn't so friendly. It had the habit of shoving. He didn't bite much, but he would shove you against a wall. (I also learned how to tell when the fucker was going to charge at me, without making a grunt, or sound...) Animals are like humans, You have Gay ones, and Hetero ones, and you have assholes But never turn your back to a alligator... Reptiles have the tendency of being assholes too.

You just don't get it do you.

The box shows you what matters, which is the duck.

It's in that last piece you haven't found. Also that last piece shows a whole torn into a painting of Winnie the Pooh and Tiger.

So it's really just a duck and a painting around that duck put there to fool people who don't trust the box.

[–]toxiklogic 14 points15 points ago

Having dated a lazy christian for two years now, i've realised faith is this: "Ok, ok. You've proven your point. I can see that it's probably Winnie The Pooh...but you know what? I don't get Winnie The Pooh and I don't know how I can possibly live my life happily if this really is Winnie The Pooh. All I've been told since I was born is that it's a duck. I don't have the strength or courage to go on living my life with this new Winnie The Pooh idea...and you know what? you believe that it's Winnie The Pooh and you're miserable and depressing. I think I'm just going to have fun pretending it's a duck with my friends"

Worth noting, the religion bunny was saying "it says this" so there's no need to figure it out for ourselves. This applies to science, don't go by the book alone, figure it out for yourself. This is the method by which our society learns.

The argument that God can not be disproved is redundant. This is because for something to be even valid by scientific method, it first needs to be either provable or disprovable. If it can not be disproved then it already fails scientific method

What faith fundamentalism looks like

FTFY

Liberal Catholic here and my faith in a God doesn't detract from the badass awesomeness that is science. It's not an either or equation.

[–]tango127 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm an atheist but this bothers me. Saying that this is what faith looks like is just kind of mean. Most who believe in any religion of any sort or simply have faith in something are usually stronger because they believe in something. I have faith in the people in my life but I wouldn't go around saying how great they are even if it's obvious they're horrible people. The content of the analogy is relevant if you say "What fundamentalists look like" but faith in general is too broad. It's like saying, "anyone who goes with their gut is a stubborn imbecile."

[–]AuroraDark 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We're not talking about "going with your gut". We're talking about blindly believing something and ignoring MOUNTAINS of evidence that contradicts those beliefs.

[–]guinness_blaine 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you treat scripture as a largely metaphorical work whose focus is spiritual truths and providing a model for how to live one's life, as many Christians do, there isn't so much dogma or beliefs that run counter to scientific consensus. You might notice that, although only about 16% of Americans identify as having no religion, roughly half accept evolution. Clearly, there is a large group of theists who are willing to believe scientific consensus rather than literally interpreting religious texts. So exactly what "MOUNTAINS of evidence" are people like Theodosius Dobzhansky and Francis Collins ignoring?

[–]tango127 5 points6 points ago

People with faith question themselves and their faith all the time. The Book of Mormon, not the book, but the musical by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who definitely don't give a shit about religion, is about faith as something that, regardless of what it is they believe, helps you. I would say that you're blind if you belittle them for that.

This is the crux. Most scientists aren't looking for something to help them or comfort them, they want to create the most accurate models of the natural world around them. Fair enough if you want to believe in a god... but the construct better not contradict what we see in real life (e.g.: creationism).

Well it's not only fundamentalists that do this either. My dad is not a biblical fundamentalist, but he (unwillingly) could empathize with this analogy. I think it should be "what religious faith looks like" or something to that extent. Faith by itself is too broad, but fundamentalism too narrow. The moderates are in this batch too.

Yea. Whenever in conversation I always have to ask what exactly is meant by certain words and whatnot.

We get it...any critique of religion is mean.

That said I think everyone should ridicule faith the exact same way you would ridicule an adult saying they think Santa is real.

Stop playing into peoples delusions...doing so is not helpful.

[–]jerfoo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally agree. We cannot continue to handle this delusion with kid gloves because it often hampers progress. I don't mind if someone says that they believe in a god (while I don't accept deism, I don't find it offensive), but if someone says the Holy Bible claims the world is 6,000 years old and God created man out of dust, well, then that person will receive my ridicule.

It works better as an argument against creationism. After all, it can be argued that the creator made the universe to look like the other puzzle. Sort of like "god directed evolution"

I think this would be more of a product of dogma than faith. One can have faith and still be able to consider other possibilities. Those who stick strictly to dogma, however, cannot.

I believe in evolution, science, you name it. I still believe in god. Faith is not the same thing as ignorance.

It is kinda true, but on the other hand some people just need to believe in something, it makes them feel i dunno.. safe maybe (I guess?) therefore laughing at them, engaging in (and posting here) countless conversations on facebook, rage comics aint gonna change their beliefs, and is obviously not a way of a mature atheist. Just because they want to believe in something, doesn't mean they're dumb because they really think that god exists.. that's why we should respect their choice, and if they don't respect your uhm.. situation, show them that you don't need to follow commandments to be a "better" person, but STILL respect their religion

[–]OldSchoolAfro 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That analogy is very accurate for atheism. Just imagine the actual puzzle is about 10,000 times bigger than what is shown so far, but the atheists assume they know the full picture by looking at that small piece because clearly they are intelligent enough to extrapolate the rest.

[–]c2dj4boogie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Similar, but really quite distinct. You can disprove literal aspects of the Bible, but eventually the argument will turn towards the possibility that an entity that could have created the universe exists.

This is where this metaphor fails.

It would be more relevant instead of trying to prove something is a "duck" that it was trying to prove that it "contains a duck", or even better, that the puzzle itself was created by a duck and the whole puzzle was all of existence and every possible degree of uncertainty that science can explore ...

.. which is hard to imagine as a single piece of an almost complete puzzle. People in previous centuries made this exact mistake as well - believing that science and logic was at its pinnacle, and that time and resources were the only limitation of an almost complete explanation.

[–]OHeyReddit 1 point2 points ago

More representative specifically of the "god of the gaps" argument than of faith as a whole, but this is the first visual thing from /r/atheism I've enjoyed in a long while.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see two interpretations:

1) The creation myth of Genesis is contradicted by scientific research

2) The existence of God is contradicted by scientific research

I think most scientists would accept (1), but would have trouble accepting (2). So although I appreciate the jigsaw puzzle metaphor as a philosophical argument, I think the title of the link is misleading. The lesson I would take away is:

"If X is taken on faith and Y is proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and if 'X and Y' is impossible, then we must reject faith in X" [1].

The problem with trying to apply this method to "faith in X" where X is general is that you quickly run into problems like, "why should we have faith in X" where X is:

1) Propositional logic or first order logic 2) Set theory 3) Axiom of choice 4) Other minds

Editorializing, I would rename this "What scientific discovery looks like".

[1] The other option is to kill or exile everyone who believes in Y, see Irrational number.

[–]jacobcg 1 point2 points ago

this should be called "what religious faith looks like", cause i think that's what it's trying to make a point of... faith in itself is something that is really important in a happy life. even if it's just faith that your future, or even that your day is going to go well.

Faith is believing in something that we can not always see, true faith is realizing it's not always going to work out the way we want it but still believing. That is faith. And following anything blindly or without question is not true faith. I have true faith.
