He earned every merit badge, but never got scout pants or a belt. I don't even want to think about whether he's wearing scout socks or not...

Edit: Just noticed no epaulets...amateur.

In my years as a scout I've noticed that some troops just don't enforce all the rules. I remember on camporees seeing troops with kids playing gameboy in their street clothes while their parents set up camp and cooked.

[–]UllrichFromGeldeland 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

as an eagle scout i can attest to this. the only uniform rule that my troop didnt abide by was the neckerchiefs. that being said, every medal ceremony EVERYONE had to be in full uniform. also, my sash looks a lot like taht

[–]mvan231 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea... I am fellow eagle scout as well and I have seen many troops that are like this

[–]BulkVanderhuge 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hell, my troop leaders only made us wear our stuff at awards ceremonies. We took beer and chewing tobacco on our trips all the time. We brought Playboys and Hustlers and our scout leader was a detective in the Bay Area and used to tell us all the stories about his arrests and didn't leave out details. What a great time.

Nice try Boy Scout recruiter.

One time, in order to get our wilderness survival badge, our scout masters blindfolded us, marched us for about half an hour into the woods, then left us there overnight. Five 14 year old boys left in the middle of the woods at Eagle Meadows (in CA) with only the clothes on our backs, a canteen of water, and survival knives. The scoutmasters actually went back to camp and went to sleep, leaving us to fend for ourselves in the middle of the woods. Sounds cool but was actually pretty fucking terrifying. This was the 80s at the peak of the slasher movies and we'd seen all of them. We sat up all night around a campfire with our knives drawn. And this is totally bear territory.

[–]slapdashbr 8 points9 points ago

I wish my scout leaders had been that badass. Our troop still was pretty good though, none of this parents-doing-the-work shit

[–]Cephalopodzz 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. I hated my scout master at times for forcing this "Boy lead troop" ideology on us but in hindsight I'm a more responsible and knowledgeable person because of it. I sure as hell wouldn't have made it to Eagle without his philosophy too.

[–]Dr_Herp_Derp 5 points6 points ago

At summer camps, adult led troops were extremely depressing. Especially the ones with female scoutmasters. They were either extremely lazy and did nothing, or they had a drill sergeant scoutmaster commanding them to do everything down to bare necessities such as breathing. Tl;dr: Boy led troops are badass and are far more beneficial.

[–]Tuor896 0 points1 point ago

i was in a "boy lead" troop but the leader election was always a popularity contest and not who actually had the skills to do it

I use to teach wilderness survival merit badge among others - thats how it rolls. Get tough or go home.

[–]mvan231 1 point2 points ago

Agreed man, that merit badge was hardcore and I loved every minute of it

[–]JustSplendid 1 point2 points ago

We did wilderness survival near Mount Salak on Java, Indonesia. Before the adults left us out there to sleep in our makeshift bamboo-pole shelter, they told us panthers had been seen in the area in the past. Fast forward one day and zero hours of sleep later, we got home and looked it up - there are panthers in that area! WTF, adults?!

[–]Cephalopodzz 1 point2 points ago

My summer camp did the same thing to us but with bears. lots of fucking bears. No one slept that week at camp.

We did the same thing, but it was the early 90's and in the Stanley area of Idaho. Very, very cold.

Nice. When I was earning my wilderness survival merit badge at camp meriwether my instructor ended up sleeping in my shelter because he was too cold and scared to walk back to his shelter, about a mile away at night. Good times.

[–]grubas 1 point2 points ago

My troop's campouts involved waiting for the adults to turn around, then drinking beer and smoking a bowl or two. Spending a weekend high in the woods is awesome.

But there are troops that are so SCOUTY! that it hurts.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My troop did that kinda stuff. I was pretty square back then, so I kinda just lost interest.

[–]Hookhand 1 point2 points ago

It's hard to be impressed with a troop who phones it in awarding that many badges. I'm sure he fulfilled all the requirements for ever badge. I'm serious. I mean it.

[–]Cephalopodzz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A kid near my home town got every single merit badge too.

However, according to my scout master who was a woodworking instructor and the head if merit badges for the council, the scout would do the requirments for badges before starting them with a counsler meaning he "cheated".

[–]mvan231 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah that shit happens all the time.. sad to see the "rules" thrown out the window. so much for scouting being about the outdoors... I am an Eagle Scout and proud to say that my troop was definitely one that "left no trace" and was very active with camping and other activities.

[–]ghostlyAnalyst 13 points14 points ago

I know right? What kind of Eagle Scout doesn't have the full uniform

[–]7841378741 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eagle scout here too. Negged everyone that didn't have the whole uniform. People always looked terrible wearing jeans with the BSA shirt.

[–]yourotherusername 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eagle scout here too. As an adult leader of a half-poor troop I let all the boys wear jeans because many couldn't afford scout pants. The importance of the uniform in the troop for troop functions is uniformity and elimination of division-by-class by clothing standards. But when you got one kid showing up in a ragged t-shirt and jeans and another showing up in a full class A just-back-from-the-cleaners, that didn't really work so well.

Not saying you had the same problem, just offering another perspective.

After we got everyone a shirt we started working on a uniform program. Years later we now have a surplus and everyone has a full and fitting uniform on the cheap.

[–]AngelicLoki 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My troop actually made people kick in a couple extra dollars in registration, and we had a sort of scholarship fund for those who couldn't afford to camp or get the uniform. It was a good way to keep people involved.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty sure the uniform wasn't flattering to anyone as a whole. I really never liked wearing it much, but I only had to wear the full attire at formal scouting events. Anything else pertaining to camping or badge earning was usually done in jeans and without much strict enforcement of dress code. Especially since several kids that I knew were really poor and those clothes were $50 an item

[–]CrossingTheT 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With pants, it looked damn good. So long as there werent any girls around.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was about to say "girls are the only one's that matter to look good in front of". Then I realized we are talking about the BSA, so I think I just officially voided my entire comment. Touche sir, for you have defeated me without even having to say much

[–]replyingtopost 0 points1 point ago

The official socks were sorta itchy.

[–]423088 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always thought I looked snazzy as hell in my uniform. Short sleeve class a, shorts, socks and my hiking boots. I cut a sexy figure. Especially after I got the Eagle neckerchief.

[–]RunningInSquares 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Scout shorts were the best. Their was no substitute for their perfect level of just-too-shortness. Oh how I miss the days where even the top part of my kneecaps could be exposed to a gentle breeze...while standing even!

[–]Volatar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jeans work just fine with the green Venturing uniforms though.

[–]Grifachu 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eagle Scout here too. Look my troop only made us where the uniform at formal occasions. It might look nice, but it really functions poorly. Whenever we camped out or went on hikes we wore proper gear not BSA branded stuff. And yes we were that troop that made fun of people for being "scoutty scouts." Man those campouts were fun, it was a great excuse for dads to shoot the shit on a weekend and drink beer while we were out exploring, lighting stuff on fire, and just being kids. I hope I have a son...

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just about to get my eagle scout (getting my BoR pretty soon) and honestly I own scout pants but never got them hemmed, never wore them, usually I just wear khakis or chinos, and if I'm in the woods I will wear jeans, because nobody cares how I look

[–]I_Need_A_Beard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Someone like me, who was in scouts for 5 years and never graduated past Tenderfoot. I learned a lot about wilderness survival, cooking, rowing, canoes, fishing, and what have you, and loved the camp-outs. I just didn't give two shits about badges or ranks or uniforms. Looking back I probably should have, though.

[–]AngelicLoki 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really... I barely got eagle because I just didn't care. I enjoyed the Order of the Arrow campouts much more; my vigil and founders awards mean 100x more to me even though nobody knows what they are.

[–]chazzledazzle23 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. The opportunities I had in OA were some of the best I've had anywhere! Getting vigil and arrowman of the year are some of my favorite accomplishments. One of my dreams is to someday be in a job interview and be asked "have you seen the arrow?"

[–]grensley 0 points1 point ago

I didn't own the whole uniform until becoming camp staff.

[–]V33G33 0 points1 point ago

Eagle Scout here. I don't even own physical badges for half the ones I earned. I also don't have pants. And my uniform still has my life badge on it.

And neckerchief over the collar? Come on man

[–]HCLcoasters 20 points21 points ago

It's the popped collar of the BSA.

[–]Geschirrspulmaschine 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some troops do that, some actually tuck the collar under because that's how the old uniforms were (neck style like a button-up baseball uniform has).

hipster troops.

And some troops just wear bolo ties :p lazy people unite!

[–]icameinsideher 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am an Eagle Scout and have worn my neckerchief in no other way than over the collar with the collar tucked into my shirt. This is actually the correct way to wear the neckerchief and was the standard in the very beginning in the 1930s when the BSA was started. In the 70s/80s the code was relaxed and troops were allowed to do their own thing. In my small Georgia town we had two troops, mine which were the collar tuckers, and the other non-collar-tuckers. It's just a variance that depends on the troop and their leader. My troop leader was a Colonel in the Air Force so rigid dress code was standard. And honestly is was the best because our Troop ALWAYS looked the best and had complete a full uniforms at all functions. Not this half assed shit this dude it wear BUT I give him mad props for all the merit badges. He must STILL be a virgin.

[–]apple-facedGOON 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I'm an Eagle scout too, and I also spent some time in the Air Force coincidentally. I guess I always considered the kids that wore over the collar to be lazy in my troop since our modus operandi was under the collar.

[–]ThatDerpWhoRuns 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is exactly how we used to wear it. My scout master was way old school so we always one uniform inspections at summer camps. I just finished reading your post and noticed your leader was in the Air Force. Mine was in the Army. It must be a military thing.

[–]7841378741 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

+1, my troop was the same way and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I never saw anyone wear the Eagle neckerchief under the collar either.

[–]Tiek00n 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Collar-tucker here. Our scoutmaster told us back during WWII Japanese Boy Scouts had their collars up, but US Boy Scouts didn't have collars, so we weren't allowed to have ours showing. Most tucked, but several just cut the collars off at the scoutmaster's suggestion.

[–]tindey56 5 points6 points ago

Philmont is awesome! Unfortunately, It doesn't really look like a Philmont belt though. It's lame that he isn't in full uniform but its cool that he has that many merit badges. I got eagle with 28 merit badges.

[–]NyxAither 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he cool enough to be rockin' a Philmont belt. I might get to be a Philmont ranger next summer, I'm psyched.

I have a cousin who went through Rayado last summer and has applied to be a ranger. I think it would be awesome to be back country staff and I will probably apply for a position like that next year. [–]Thirdilemma 1 point2 points ago

Mormon scout here, i totally wish. However i will agree that sadly this is the case sometimes. However my mom was gonna make sure i earned my eagle the honest way. 9 years of work later. I finally earned my eagle.

(it really shouldnt have taken 9 years, but ya know...procrastination)

[–]goosebumper88 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know this isnt always the case, but I was (still technically in) a very small troop in a town with one other troop. it was a mormon troop who never went camping 20ft from civilization, and every scout got every one of the 100+ merit badges, and got eagle by 16. they would literally do things like in the situation I just described. we joked about them for years.

Good for you man! im 17 and working on my project right now.

[–]Thirdilemma 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Erm, sounds like im in the same boat as you. But yeah, we were more than 20 ft from civilization. We would go out of state and stuff more often than not. Hiked angels landing, canoed down many a river. It was some good years bro. I'm close to turning 18 now. cool cool! gl man! youre so close! trust me, it feels good to have it off your back

scout pants kinda sucked. substitute OD green fatigue shorts, more pockets.

The leadership corps in my troop wore the green explorer shirts and red berets. we were like the special forces of boyscouts. Our gateways for summer camp were things like 100 ft pioneering towers. We built a 130 ft long monkey bridge with a zip line once...

scouts was a blast. eagle with palms...W W W.

I'd like to point out that he is from the Great Salt Lake Council. This means he's probably a member of the LDS church. This goes to explain his lack of scout pants, belt, epaulets, and probably socks. Due to the way that the LDS church runs their program, I question the validity of all these Merit Badges and his Eagle.

[–]ThatDerpWhoRuns 0 points1 point ago

[–]SeaTwertle 0 points1 point ago

I've always been told that once one reaches the rank of Eagle scout and moves into the faculty of the troop, the pants can be interchanged with any pants, as the shirt of the uniform is considered the main attire.

Also ask your Ranger about "monkeying" around.

you are never a "former" eagle scout. Once an Eagle always an Eagle my friend.

[–]efrance1 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I simply meant by that was I'm a former boy scout, I have since turned 18 and no longer allowed in as a scout. I know I am still an Eagle, but I did not think many people here would understand the concept because it's such a strange one.

[–]mvan231 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is quite a strange concept but glad to know that you don't consider yourself an ex-eagle

[–]NovaDeez 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never made Eagle, and OP's point always makes me wonder why. I was a Scout for three years before one of the adult leaders sat me down and said, "Damn it, we're going through and signing off everything you've done since you joined the troop." We checked off everything for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and half of the requirements for First Class.

I'll spend hours upon hours trying to get obscure achievements in video games so I can complete them, but when it came to real life achievements of Boy Scouts I was just more interested in camping with my friends.

My new girlfriend's dad is a Scoutmaster for the troop back in her hometown. When I told her I was an Eagle Scout, she jokingly scoffed because "she would end up dating an Eagle."

I'd just like to say that as a 20 year old girl, if a guy told me he was an eagle scout/ was a committed boy scout, it would increase the attraction factor by 100 fold. There is something very, very sexy about a guy who can commit himself to something that's not staring at a screen.

[–]weekendlobotomist 5 points6 points ago

Well, not gonna brag but I am an Eagle Scout. however I am also a Redditor, so I'm pretty damn committed to both.

Both are good in my book. I sort of realized the ridiculousness of what I said after I submitted my comment, but who isn't addicted to the screen that is Reddit?

I think it's time we create a program with merit badge/achievements for anybody, regardless of gender or age. So anybody who has an interest in personal development can begin the program and become a better person. Some of the badges could be community development stuff, like helping to develop the program itself, maybe.

comment karma is easier to accrue, but I suppose it better reflects your "worth" on reddit. also /r/theoryofreddit

[–]I_Need_A_Beard 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a cool little subreddit. But I only say that because I enjoy the comments on reddit WAY more than the actual links. Most of the time, anyway.

[–]mikesername 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm really interested in just the way social websites work. r/TOR has some nice thought-provoking stuff

edit: misread what you were saying. Reddit's comments are usually très better, I suppose. something about link karma just makes it feel inherently more valuable to me, idk. maybe it's the hype of the elusive "front paaaage"

[–]pics-or-didnt-happen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Odd that you would use the word "gimp" as an insult in a scouting-related thread.

[–]aterlumen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be honest, I'm really not impressed with it anymore. My scoutmaster's family had a competition problem and both of their sons got Eagle as fast as possible, every merit badge offered, and a lot of stuff like the William T Hornaday award. They went through the motions, got some scholarships, but I really don't think they achieved anything more than a guy who plays WoW too much has. Winning for the sake of winning is meaningless, regardless of the context.

[–]donnacheer11 0 points1 point ago

It is.Once when I was in the army,we got lost in a sudden snow storm in Colorado,we had been shown how to start fire that way. It saved our lives. Please don't make fun of scouting, it has taught many kids, boys and girls many useful skills, made lasting friendships, and prepared many for future successes.

Only good thing about being an eagle scout is that you're instantly a higher grade private when entering the military. Instant $40 per month raise from the typical maggot.

[–]DutchInfid3l 1 point2 points ago

You can apply for an E-2 pay grade going in if you have had at least two years JROTC... I did, you're still referred as an "airman basic" in AF basic training, but you'll get paid as an E-2. I'm sure the other services (probably not the Marines) do as well.

Troop 1111 circa 1985 checking in. We were a disorganized bunch. Our scoutmaster was a drunk and would beat the shit out of us but we still loved him cause he would just buy badges and hand them out to us. I probably had 30 of them and didn't do shit to earn them.

Prepared me for the real world perfectly.

[–]Annieone23 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is sad. I am sorry for your "real world."

As an eagle scout from North Dakota imagine getting your wilderness survival badge in the middle of winter. It was at least 10 degrees below zero when I got mine. There were were very few pussies in our troop. As a patrol we decided to get our ws in the middle of January. Also there was at least four feet of fresh snow. We're rugged in the Midwest.
