I decided to look this up and try to get it, new it costs $150, more than a ds, and used still around $75

WHY??

[–]gumarx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, I've had really weird luck finding games like this in Wal-Mart, my best guess is some kid gets it as a gift, doesn't know what a gem he has and instead is like "WTF I wanted Madden!" (or whatever) and returned it to Wal-Mart. I've found two games there that were regular price at Wally World but $100 + on-line.

Well, I'll have to check it out, probably check all other gaming stores I know too because I've found hard to find games hidden behind stuff on occasion. If I still can't find it, Atlus needs to re-release because it sounds like an amazing game and I'm pretty sure a lot more people would buy it.

[–]ZhilTP9112 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, really? I got it new from Amazon for $20 on Nov. 21st. The price spike must have happened recently. Sorry to hear that.

[–]NintenDork 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atlus makes a lot of their games on a limited run so once they're sold out, they become very valuable. You should look up past games they came out with and see prices on them also.

This needs to be resolved. Looked it up on Amazon and $120... wtf?

Shit, man. I had no idea it was worth this much now. Really great game that maybe I'll finally finish so I can sell it for MAD CASH.

Always been really curious about the series. Which one is the best point of entry?

[–]Dmoneater 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While my brain immediately begins shouting "START FROM THE BEGINNING!", I would say 2 is my favorite and really got me hooked on the series. It's 12 bucks at GameStop too which makes it easy on the wallet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Nice. My love for the DS is entirely rooted in its abundance of weird/unique RPGs. Always felt like this was one of them.

Don't worry, fellow redditor, I upvoted you. Forever alone no more. Best games on the DS.

How do you get past the first person battles? I need to see sprites attacking in my JRPGs.

[–]Hiphoppington 2 points3 points ago

I'm old enough to consider actually seeing sprites a gimmick. Weened on wizardry.

I loved this game but never finished it. I lost the cartridge for a while and when I found it again, I completely forgot how the battle system works. I'm starting it over again.

[–]DeltaBurnt 11 points12 points ago

You really need to finish it as the plot is really good, the ending kinda blew my mind.

[–]Tanspriter 2 points3 points ago

It's among one of my all-time favourite rpgs and DS games. Incredibly unique gameplay and the art style is incredible.

Also it has freggin beyblade mode.

[–]Cendeu 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The top post is that... and timestamps say the person posted an hour before you did.

So technically someone did mention it.

Is it a good game? I assume it is (due to it being the two top posts)... what's it about?

[–]NintenDork 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's about problems in the timeline called Historia that certain events have to be done right to put it back the way it should be, otherwise the whole world will be turned into a desert. As with most JRPG's there is a war, alliances, double crosses, twists, etc. I thought the storyline was great and enjoyed the combat system immensely.

[–]Togedude 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll give a non-spoilery back-of-the-box summary:

Basically, you know the world is going to be destroyed at some point in the future. You have the power to travel between any time periods that are determined to be pivotal in changing history forever. But, you can always teleport back to a previous point if you find that your decision was not the right one (and, in fact, sometimes this is necessary so that the protagonist has knowledge that he wouldn't otherwise have).

By making all the correct decisions in the right time periods, you have to stop the world from ending.

The story, gameplay, music, and graphics are all fantastic. It's a shame that it had no marketing or anything.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It sounds really awesome. Thanks.

I really need to go get it. I've been slightly bored lately. And have been looking for good RPGs. I recently started a Kingdom Hearts marathon with my sister-in-law, but we're almost done.

She's having lots of fun switching, so we may just add on games like this.

[–]amward6 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been meaning to get Radiant Historia. How's the combat? I'm familiar with the time-travel motif, but hadn't heard about the rest of the gameplay.

[–]NintenDork 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The combat is done on a 3x3 grid using turn based combat. You see who is going to attack first, you or your enemies. You can then parlay that into letting your enemies go first, then stacking attacks in succession for combo bonuses that equal greater experience and gold at the end of the battle. You can also pull your enemies forward, knock them back and move them left or right to stack them together to hit at once and string combos. It's a lot of fun.

[–]Lugonn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is on the easy side.

Even though I had no idea how the combo system worked (don't ask...) and used a very subpar team I still managed to defeat the final boss on my first try.

Agreed, start at one. I played 1, Chain of Memories, 2, 358/2 Days, then Re:coded. I unfortunately don't have a PSP, so I haven't played Birth by Sleep, but all of these other games are definitely worth playing. 1 is still my favorite though.

[–]NintenDork 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't list SNES remakes as favorite DS RPG's, solely based on the fact that the originals are more enjoyable and have been around for 10 - 15 years.

[–]kitfyre 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're RPG's . . . on the DS. They're meant for the whole generation who couldn't identify a SNES out of a box full of Wonderswans. Plus the originals can run you $80+ not including the console.

[–]NintenDork 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't know current prices. I've owned them since they came out when I was in middle school when the SNES first came out.

[–]ranniskurast 3 points4 points ago

How could anyone play that game? You had to fight two different battles on two screens. I don't know about you, but I don't have that kind of multi-tasking prowess

[–]wharrgarble 2 points3 points ago

Whatever screen you're not playing on is set to auto, so you don't really have to play on two screens at once if you don't want to.

It's got a bit of a steep learning curve, if you ask me, but the awesome story and graphics are worth it, imho.

[–]applesnstuff 0 points1 point ago

The story and characters were pretty generic JRPG characters, but the combat system and dungeons were actually unique. The character is supposed to destroy the world but he doesn't know how or why. There was an anime adaptation off of the game too, i haven't watched it but if that kind of thing interests you it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

I'm so sad that only a few people mentioned dragon quest. Dragon Quest V was truly amazing, better than any DS pokémon game.

Dragon Quest IX is pretty fun also, still have to finish it (still in the Gleeba Sewers part).

Dragon quest Monsters Joker 2 is a interesting game also, it focus on taming monsters but uses a completely original system instead of copying pokémon.

I loved everything about Dragon Quest 8, except for it's incredibly slow-paced battles and "grindy nature". Is DQ5 worse or better in that regard? I'd be willing to give another Dragon Quest a shot because DQ8 was beautiful visually and had an amazing soundtrack and story to boot. It just took me months of going back to the game to grind enough to beat the final dungeon and I don't want to sign-up for another dragged-out experience like that.

Easily one of the best JRPGs I've played since the SNES days. Which is why I'm glad it's at the top. Some other greats that I didn't see on here though (or overlooked).

Nostalgia, Sands of Destruction, Soma Bringer, Infinite Space, Avalon Code, Knights In The Nightmare, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor

Radiant Historia is one of those games that no one ever bought, but everyone should have bought.

It absolutely is. Luckily for my obsessive compulsive RPG buying, I picked it up with no actual idea of what it was. Without that, I wouldn't have bought Legend of Dragoon or the SNES Shadowrun back in the day either.

I just saw a small review of it in Gameinformer, and heard a review of it from a game reviewer I like on Youtube. Both spoke so highly of it, that I had to get it. Quite possibly the best rpg I've ever played.

I quite enjoyed Digimon World DS. It kinda sucks that it doesn't look like any of the newest ones are going to be ported internationally.
