anyone who takes a photograph is a photographer.

[–]cajunbander 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you. It doesn't mean they're a good photographer or a professional photographer.

Just like a driver is anyone that drives a vehicle. You don't have to be a good driver or a professional driver to drive a car.

This argument always bugs me. Just because somebody's not a "professional photographer" doesn't mean they can't take pictures? Maybe they have a photography hobby, maybe they're just starting to get into photography and need constructive criticism. Even Ansel Adams wasn't the amazing photographer he was when he first started taking pictures.

No, the dictionary. Professional - Noun: A person engaged or qualified in a profession

You mean like doctors who volunteer their service?

[–]sarge21 -1 points0 points ago

A doctor is a certification. You have to be a certified doctor to volunteer your service as a doctor.

What OP and the others who say this are referring to are the people who take pictures for the sake of appearing to be "artsy", professional, and "deep".

To use your own analogy to explain it, it would be like someone strapping on a pair of driving gloves, driving to the store, and then claiming to be a professional driver because they saw Transporter.

[–]westonsbellpepper 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I couldn't agree more. I worked as a professional photographer for many years of my life, and whenever people would approach me with the "I'm a photographer" line, I would judge them based on the merit of their work.

I think it really bothers people that photography is so accessible. If you want to impress people with your esoteric hobby, pick another one. Actually, if you're trying to impress people with your hobbies, you probably need to reassess if you're really interested in doing that activity or if you're interested in people thinking you're interesting.

[–]pretzelzetzel 1 point2 points ago

OP is sort of incorrect, here. 'Original' nothing. It's the umpteenth repost of what was originally a joke taken directly from a TV show. It's as far from OC as you can get.

Yes, they're technically photographers but most of these albums are posted by people that think they're these amazing professionals because they have a DSLR. By this, i mean watermarking your shitty picture of a tree blowing in the wind, and/or starting a tacky facebook fan page to display your brilliant works of art.

[–]RespondsWithBadJokes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Holy shit. I know someone who did this, and I was at the same high school as hers a few years ago.

Unsure if I want to post the Facebook page link. She does "professional" photographs of people and sells them 200 bucks a pop.

I'm not sure if scamming people out of their money for shitty portraits is a scumbag move, or a brilliant one.

[–]rockatiel 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Amazing...I know a girl that does this too, and she's still in high school. I am experimenting with photography and it bugs the hell out of me that she does it. Some pictures look good but I'd rather go to a professional...which we have two of in my town.

She calls it "Little Miss Airhead Photography"...

In fact, she keeps friend requesting me and I don't know her well enough to care about actually adding her.

[–]RespondsWithBadJokes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does she have a "cute little watermark" engraved into the corner of each one?

Because, if so, I would rage after every single one with "Little Miss Airhead" on it.

[–]rockatiel 0 points1 point ago

Oh, not cute. Huge ones. Either the initials of the name in big white letters or a huge white block.

Semantics aside of what makes someone a photographer or not, I will say that to me, nothing screams "amateur" louder than an "artsy" black and white shot.

It's like the Papyrus font of pictures.

[–]mage2k 5 points6 points ago

[–]russkev 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen some amazing black and whites but I think I know what you mean.

Personally I'm a little sick of seeing the hipstamatic/artsy iphone app photos everywhere. You're crap photo doesn't suddenly look amazing because it has that 'analogue look'!

[–]TylerKeys 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh yeah, it's not saying that all black and whites are bad, it's just they have been cheapened as a whole because every aspiring amateur photographer says to themselves, "What can I do to really make this look professional? I KNOW - BLACK AND WHITE!"

The hipstamatic thing is a fad just the same. All these things are. The fad filters (the lens flare being the most infamous), fad fonts, etc etc. It's not really unique anymore when everyone is hopping on the bandwagon to do it.

[–]crossower 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Papyrus is still a font. A shitty font, but a font anyway. Same way with photography. A shitty photographer is still a photographer.

[–]Plagueology 2 points3 points ago

This. The argument isn't if someone is a photographer or not, it is just so accessible now. It used to be an expensive hobby, so if you did it, you most likely did it professionally. You didn't pay hundreds of dollars for plates or film and mix all the chemicals for fun. But now, any hipster can use instagram on his iPhone and all of a sudden s/he's an artisan of the digital world.

I also think the idea that calling yourself a photographer or a gamer and so forth when you are terrible at it is just setting yourself up for embarrassment. At the very least, don't tell someone who makes a good amount of money doing something like photography and say "I am a photographer, too! Want to see my deviantart account with pictures I took with my phone and edited in my pirated Photoshop?"

Anyone can say they are a computer engineer if they made a calculator in java and put together their enthusiast PC, but you are going to look like an idiot if you say that to someone who gets payed to code Microsoft software.

[–]Stares_at_llamas 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for expanding on my comment, it makes my comment 'sound' less pretentious.

Same thing is happening to DJing. I met 3 "DJs" who just sync beats and eq-mix while clipping audio the whole time and a dozen "Photographers" carrying their Nikon 5000s around like they're bosses, and yes your camera is neat, yet you have no idea what an f/stop is, and if you do, well congrats - you know the theory.

Or any musician ever talking to someone who learned how to play a Jack Johnson song. No, playing the same three chords over and over does NOT make you a great musician, it makes you a monotonously dull moron. Same thing goes with girls who play broken chords on piano over and over and over and over thinking it sounds "mystical."

[–]Hindu_Wardrobe 0 points1 point ago

Only because cameras (be them 'real' or on your phone) are much more accessible now than they were in the past.

[–]CamouflageDave 5 points6 points ago

Thats akin to saying anyone that sprints is a sprinter or that because you can write you are a writer. When you say you are a photographer you imply that you excel at it or understand the principles of good photography.

Well when you say you are a gamer it is implied that you have great interest in games and understand what a good game is. Someone that plays angry birds on the phone casually is not a gamer. When you call yourself a gamer, a photographer, a cleaner etc you are associating your identity with the given activity. Whether it be because you are particularly successful at it or put in a lot of time, personification of an activity has a non-casual connotation. don't know if that makes sense at all but i hope you get what i mean.

"Gamer" isn't a profession. "Photographer" is.

Yes, I understand there are some people who are exceptionally good at games who can make money by winning tournaments, but typically it isn't enough money to make a living, and more importantly, "gamer" almost always refers to a hobby.

When I say "I am a photographer," because "photographer" is a profession, it makes it sound like I take pictures for a living. A more accurate statement would be "I am an amateur photographer."

[–][deleted] ago*

[deleted]

[–]TylerKeys 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics information for the profession, "photography". You will see that photographers held about 152,000 jobs in 2008, and earned an average yearly wage of $35,640.

Here are the search results for "gamer". If you can, please tell me how many professional gaming jobs were held in any year, or what the average yearly pay is.

Do you still think there are more professional gamers who make more money than professional photographers?

I am not saying that by calling yourself a gamer, you are wrong. You're a gamer, fine. But "gamer" does not have the same implications as "photographer." This is simply a matter of public perspective. If you say "I am a gamer," to most people, they are going to think "oh, he plays games." If you say "I am a photographer," most people will think you mean that you take pictures for a living, or intend to do so. Is it wrong for people to make that assumption? Well, that's an entirely different argument, but facts are facts.

For comparison, I cook dinner almost every night. I would not say "I am a cook." I might say "I like to cook." Saying "I am a cook," implies I cook for a paycheck.

Oh, I get that in the context of the OP, you are completely right: someone who takes pictures and posts them on facebook as a hobby is an amateur photographer, which falls under photographer, no doubt.

My original post was in response to your argument against CamouflageDave. You originally said

anyone who takes a photograph is a photographer

Which I kind of disagree with, as that really doesn't distinguish the huge difference between casually doing something once and pouring your entire career into it. I agree with him when he says that by that logic, anyone who cooks is a cook, anyone who wrote a paper is a writer, etc. Your counterargument to that was that terms don't necessarily have to imply professionalism, they can instead indicate a hobby. You made the comparison of photography to gaming, which I simply wanted to point out the differences in connotation between the two because of the wide disparity between those things, both perceived and reality.

I even mentioned to begin with that I acknowledge that professional gaming is legit. I've won prizes at tourneys, I hang out with a gaming crowd, I've seen starcraft streams complete with their e-sports announcers. Some day in the near future it may very well be on the same level as more traditionally recognized professions, but it really isn't quite there yet.

But hey, I think we are arguing semantics at this point. We seem to agree with each other on the main points, and that's what is really important, right?

I typically find myself as willing to compromise as the person I am arguing with.

Your argument of course has its merits as well.

Take care.

[–]toxeh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FYI, the top 3 earning star craft 2 players made over two hundred thousand US dollars from tornies in 2011. These guys are also sponsored. So yea, its a profession.

That aside doesn't it more depend on the context of the question? If someone said "What do you do for a living?" or "What do you do in your free time/for fun" gives the context to determine what they mean by photographer, gamer, painter, etc, etc. If someone just came up to me and, without context, said "I'm a photographer!" I would just assume they are a loony and leave.

[–]TylerKeys 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am aware. The few top gamers that are able to make a living off of it don't compare to the hundreds of thousands of photographers that make a living off of it. Professional gaming is also something that is relatively new, at least in terms of the online, streaming version, which is the fastest-growing aspect of it. It's very possible that some time in the near future gaming will be as recognized as photography as a profession, but we aren't there yet.

Decent composition, good framing, exposure seems good, although I'm not sure whether the out-of-focus background is due to a choice from the photographer, or just poor f-stop mastery. You know what? Taking pictures like this is what makes people become better photographers.

It's the photographic equivalent to talking to girls when you're age 14. It's stuff that may eventually make you go "Oh god... Why?", or maybe something you'll just remember fondly, but whatever you land up with, it's a part of a learning experience.

This doesn't really bug me - we all started somewhere. I have a friend (girl) who's just beginning to try her hand at photography. She likes to use the cameras in-built filters, especially one that desaturates all but one colour, but it's ok cos she's trying and learning. I'm trying to teach her about composition and manual settings, but it's a lot to take in!

What bugs me though is when girls buy an expensive DSLR and use it to take a selfshot in the mirror. I mean, why? Firstly it looks stupid. Secondly there's no reason not to use a phone's camera for that type of shot. And third if you have a DSLR (or in fact any half decent point&shoot, but having a DSLR implies some proficiency) you could use it to set up a great self portrait that's not just a shitty snap in the mirror. Ergo the DSLR must be there only for the 'look how much of an artsy photographer I am' effect

I'm not a photographer, if that's what you're implying. It's the whole issue of accountability and professionalism - not just photography.

If you want to put a logo on your home brew, then that's cool. You put a lot of time and effort into making it, and you want to make it look good as well as taste good. What I'm talking about is the equivalent of making a pitcher of Kool-Aid & gin and putting a DaVinci designed logo on the bottle.

I take lots of pictures and upload them to facebook but it's not because I think they're good pictures. It's because they're precious memories of mine and I'd like to see them 10 years from now on facebook. I don't have to dig through my hard drive or keep a physical copy of my pictures/videos because they're conveniently stored on the facebook timeline. Ain't that some shit?

Awwww, is OP bitter that his/her friends' "shitty" photos get more attention than his/her own?

How dare someone attempt to take pictures and create art! The nerve of them!

God forbid they put some real effort into it. "ooOOooh this looks cool" + photo effects doesn't impress me.
