Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

I agree, my grandparents STILL think I'm a whore because I have tattoos, even though I explain to them most people my age nowadays have at least one tattoo.

[–]oneiria 25 points26 points ago

Actually most people don't. Many do, but most don't.

[–]scnavi 2 points3 points ago

I guess it depends on the friends you keep, the only person my age I know that doesn't have at least one tattoo is my older sister, and that's because shes afraid to get one.

That's all I was trying to say. I agree that it's much more socially acceptable than it used to be, and if you know a lot of people with tattoos, then it might seem like "everybody" has them. But the truth is that sentiment is a combination of the representativeness/availability heuristic and the fact that we tend to surround ourselves with like-minded people. So most people don't have them, even if it often seems like that's the case. And in most cases, getting one is relatively harmless and mostly socially acceptable.

My grandma said when she was a kid that people were dying their hair blue and wearing all kinds of crazy clothes. That was in the 40's.

[–]scnavi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure its possible, but my grandparents are strict STRICT Catholics, and whenever I mention anything about tattoos or dyed hair, crazy clothes, anything, I get "well, none of my FRIENDS grandchildren have tattoos or dye their hair" No Mimi, they probably do, they're just not honest enough to their grandparents to tell them.

[–]TheAughtSpectrum 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, some old people are just too old for their own good. What's funny is I always thought my grandma was very conservative. In fact, she's in, and always has been in a cult. It's called the Church of the First Born. Women aren't allowed to wear anything but dresses, they can't cut their hair, they can't wear makeup, they don't ever go to hospitals or use medicine, they're all basically batshit insane. But she's surprisingly open about a lot of things, and from what I've seen, very accepting. But at least your grandparents can rest well knowing that everyone who dyes their hair will burn in hell forever! /s

Right now in their minds I'm screwed. I have tattoos, I'm divorced (ex husband was abusive) and my current boyfriend and I are having our first child in August. They expected me to marry my boyfriend when I told them about the baby, it blew their minds when I told them I considered never getting married again, that it was a pointless legal doctrine that helps with your taxes, that's about it. I don't need a marriage to prove how much I love my boyfriend and my unborn child. But luckily they made me go through all my catholic crap, and I'm confirmed, so technically if I start to feel bad about it, I can just go confess my sins and I'm good.

[–]Xoebe 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The line work and style is consistent - before I knew it was her husband it was pretty clear it was the same artist.

There's a lot to be said for this kind of style - it lends itself to tattoing. The popular trend with photorealism and shading is incredible when it's done well, but more often than not, the shading is overdone and the tattoo looks unnecessarily muddy.

The art of tattoo has come a long way.

Taken as a whole, and considering that it's 100+ years old....it's totally fucking badass.

Those old-style clothes would have covered all of that most of the time....she must've felt like superman or batman, just waiting to drop her disguise and go "Ta-Da! I'm da tattoo'd laaaaaaaaaaaddddddyyyy!"

It's funny, looking back at these old pictures. Redditors are always stunned at how circus sideshow acts had people that we consider perfectly normal today: like the Amazing 300-lb Man. Morbid obesity was such an aberration that it rated a spot in a circus sideshow. Likewise with this tattooed lady.

Not to demean fat men or tattooed ladies, but it's interesting to see which trends are normalized and which aren't. I mean, is it ever going to be acceptable to be a bearded lady or a dog-faced boy?

That eyebrow says "Absolutely zero fucks given about what you think of me."

[–]MidnightTurdBurglar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it says exactly the opposite. People who don't care aren't consciously concerned about what others are thinking. Some people however are actively anti-social and this woman probably is. That eyebrow is challenging people. It's the look of somebody after confrontation.

[–]mattwb72 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn’t automatically assume she was anti-social. I also don’t think the eyebrow is after a confrontation, but may be because she's had them in the past.

It's so interesting how people interpret the same appearance/gesture in completely opposite ways. I think it says way more about the observer and what life experiences he/she brings than it does about the observee. It really speaks to the "don’t judge a book..." adage. It's still fun to make up your own little story about her.

Easy- Big Camera! Known as large format. Each picture was recorded on a sheet of film that was at least 4 inches by 5 inches in size, maybe bigger. With a decent lens, a portrait photographer could easily get a picture that would be 20+ megapixel equivalent!

It's weird seeing the differences in facial expressions then and now. You can almost see the lack of shit to do written all over them. When tattoos aren't covering it up.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that has more to do with how "rare" and expensive it was to get your photo taken back then. Since people didn't just load up 4 gigs of pictures of self-shots on to facebook every day, they had to do a SRS BIZNSS pose for that "maybe once a year" shot.

[–]sherlocktheholmes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also explains why there are a lot of dead children pictures: if it's rare and expensive, you wait until a really important occasion. Also dead kids wouldn't squirm and mess up the shot.

assuming she is 20 in the pic, she'd be 125 years old this year. i'd say those tats are long rotted.

ok, assuming she's about to be born in 1907 she'd still be 105 this year. still likely rotted.
