Pretty sure that's an eagle though...

Im not so sure its an eagle either... differentiating between a hawk and an eagle is tough. But ... a raven? Im not some kind of animal know it all but I know ravens do not have the curved beak of a carnivorous predator.

The last photo is of a bald eagle, and a different kid, if it is a kid ad all. Looks like that's a golden eagle or a hawk in the first two.

[–]iConfessor 5 points6 points ago

Same bird, same kid, different perspective. The lighting is causing the eagle to look like a bald eagle, but it's just contrast.

I agree, that is definitely just the light reflecting off of the birds glossy dark feathers.

The beak, wingspan, and even the damned size of the thing in general classify it as NOT being a raven.

You've obviously never seen a raven.

But a Raven? A RAVEN?? Really?? Come on man. Not even beginning to be even in the ballpark of close. Might as well call it the Abortion Newt.

I propose that this set of photos is staged.

Firstly the condition of the wing feathers; no live bird would allow them to get into that poor a condition.

Secondly the position of the wings; in the second photo the wings are all wrong for a bird taking off.

Thirdly the weight difference; I don’t see how wings that small could lift that mass.

However as fact is often stranger than fiction, I would love to be proved wrong!

What if two eagles carried the baby together, on a line?

Are they African or European eagles?

[–]Fenix_VI 4 points5 points ago

It could be the African Eagle, but of course they're non-migratory.

[–]lljksod 9 points10 points ago

The only problem is they faked the last picture by tying the bird to the baby, and then threw the baby 30 feet in to the air.

[–]duckpow 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With you on the probably staged part. However: It is not uncommon for birds (almost all kinds) to have feathers in such a poor condition. Eagles and others birds of prey in particular are more often seen with feathers missing than other birds. The golden eagle (the one in these pictures) is able to lift quite a large body (large rabbits and such). But probably not the kid shown here, as he would weigh more than twice the eagles own weight

[–]MeltedTwix 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They can lift baby goats for a short time; pretty powerful birds.

[–]stereoviper 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At the breeding ground of the caribou, this eagle is one of the most frequent predators of newborn or young calves. Domesticated types of ungulate young are taken as well. There is one confirmed report of a Golden Eagle snatching the cub of a Brown Bear.

Yup. Not that these pics are genuine, but they sure as hell could be.

[–]stereoviper 1 point2 points ago

Wife's never gonna forgive me for this one. Still, nothing I can do now, might as well take some pictures.

[–]Mr_Subtlety 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Although this series of photos is certainly staged (bird stays completely stationary in-between pictures, last one somehow depicts bird farther away but still facing camera, and check out the supposed "child" in the last photo, the only one not on the ground), there have been reports of this sort of thing, the most famous being the somewhat well-documented Lawndale Incident.

Most avian experts agree that it is simply not possible for any known bird, regardless of size, to create enough lift to pick up a human, even a small child. The physics simply don't work. But that hasn't stopped reports from occurring and giving rise to speculation about so-called thunderbirds

If the thing can fly away with a small goat I don't see why it can't do it with a 5 year old kid.

[–]malilla 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't seem like the eagle lifted up the goat, but it pushed or pulled it away throwing it. In the second one it does grab it but they're still falling down, landing, not lifting up.

How five crows managed to lift a twenty-pound baby boy into the air was beyond Prue, but that was certainly the least of her worries. In fact, if she were to list her worries right then and there as she sat spellbound on the park bench and watched her little brother, Mac, carried aloft in the talons of these five black crows, puzzling out just how this feat was being done would likely come in dead last. First on the list: Her baby brother, her responsibility, was being abducted by birds. A close second: What did they plan on doing with him?

[–]Mr_Subtlety 2 points3 points ago

If so, a pretty weak one since there are no crows depicted. If it was a raven, it would be an attempted unkindness. True story.

I had the scariest dream when I was 8. No other dream remained so frighteningly clear in my memory over the years. In my dream I was walking down my driveway to check the mail when a predator bird lifted me into the sky by my shoulders. Just as we were reaching the clouds he lost hold of me and I fell through the sky for what seemed like forever. Woke up before I hit ground.

Abduction of Ganymede This theme was often painted for mothers who had recently lost a child, particularly in Dutch Baroque period, it was sort of like a death portrait.

If this actually happened the, child would be dead from the talons piercing through his vital organs or heart. Also, I don't believe cameras of that time, would be able to show it flying and flapping wings with no real blur.
