I see most as hyenas as in they're loud, don't shut up often, and are usually in packs. I could imagine some tiger atheists but not many they would probably be the outspoken sort of famous ones like Ricky Gervais. Then there are the kinds like me, I would be a house cat that doesn't move much and normally just sleeps but every now and again there is a red laser thing that just pisses me off.

EDIT: My highest rated comment is about me being an atheist cat... reddit I try to not believe the stereotypes but...

I played it a bit, it was somewhat enjoyable if you just want to space out, the fatal flaw is the "penalty break" which makes your train slowly come to stop every time you break the speed limit, and then you have to get it going again. AFAIK no real trains have this, and there's no way to disable it.

I think I missed that one. Is Reddit against circumcision?

[–]tommles 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you narrow circumcision to simply being infant circumcision then yes (from various comments on /r/Oney and there is a subreddit /r/intactivists against it). It's not much of an issue if you make the decision yourself and/or it is medically relevant.

Some people accept that it happened to them and move on, and others to resent their parents for it.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and others to resent their parents for it.

You know, I'm all for the arguments for and against circumcision. I have nothing against it personally, but I can see where some people wouldn't like it.

But if you're seriously holding a grudge against your parents for circumcising you when you were born, you have fucking issues beyond just circumcision.

[–]Schroedingers_gif 96 points97 points ago

For what it's worth, there are more of us here than you might think. We just tend to keep quiet for...obvious reasons.

I have a couple of tips for you though (as unsolicited as they are, I hope they help):

-If you're really uncomfortable about the number of posts about religion bashing that pop up for you, try unsubscribing to r/atheism. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about questioning your beliefs, but I also understand that it can be a bit much sometimes.

-As long as you're not pushy about it in the comments you leave and be sure to have a balanced viewpoint whenever something faith-based comes up, you should be just fine. (Better yet just avoid the issue altogether)

-Lastly, if you're looking for a place to talk about Christianity related topics in a moderate environment that is (for the most part) free of trolls, r/Christianity isn't a bad subreddit.

Edit: Holy balls I did not expect there to be this much discussion about my comment. I don't think I've ever been orangered this much before... O.o I really didn't mean for this to turn into a thread discussing the politics of r/atheism. I just wanted to give the OP a couple options to help him out...

[–]Zomgondo 1316 points1317 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

try unsubscribing to r/atheism

I did this and it vastly improved my Reddit experience. And I'm an atheist.

[–]mucusplug 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

r/atheism was great for me when I first accepted I was atheist. I later unsubscribed because the content wasn't interesting for me anymore.

When I do check on it, I feel like the majority of subscribers are also new at atheism, and that is the reason for most of the tone there.

[–]butwhatisit 503 points504 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They seem to care more about atheism than my religious friends do about their religions.

Yeah yeah, I'm generalising, whatever.

[–]darthrayder 233 points234 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, in the defense of the subreddit, it's what the subreddit is for. It wouldn't make much sense if the people in /r/atheism talked about cartography or alternative mastication practices. That's what /r/cartography or /r/alternativemastication would be for.

In your defense, it can be a little much and as an atheist, I also unsubscribed. It's a bit more circle-jerky than r/circlejerk.

[–]superherowithnopower 111 points112 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am disappointed. I really wanted /r/alternativemastication to be a thing.

[–]darthrayder 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have the power, superherowithnopower. You'll have to change your name though.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the problem arises from the fact that, by it's very nature, there's really not much to say about a lack of belief, so a default subreddit about it inevitably stagnates and gets repetitive and circle-jerky. I can't get over how it's a default subreddit, when you could have, say, a default music, films or books subreddit instead. Or even just a generic skepticism or generic religion subreddit.

[–]NeedsMoreCrazy 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Default subreddits are based on the number of readers/subscribers, last time I checked.

[–]sammwwise 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you this has to be the first time I heard an atheist say they don't like r/atheism without being an arrogant dick about how they're "not that kind of atheist".

[–]travysh 262 points263 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You may be generalizing, but I had the same impression. Which is why I unsubscribed.

I consider myself a... semi-atheist... A big reason for that is that I dislike how religion can affect the "sanity" of a person. And I saw the exact same behavior from r/atheism.

[–]Uberninjaa 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Man! People who believe in God can be insane! That's why I don't like them!"

"Wait, atheists can be insane too!"

I don't think /r/atheism represents atheists in the best light. I'm personally Christian, but I get along with Atheists because I can understand why they don't believe in God. The /r/atheism Atheists though seem to be that kind of Atheist that is not much better than the radical "Christians" that tell homosexuals to go die and the sort.

I really wish we could all just get along :(

Agreed, r/atheisms front page is usually garbage. However, I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, if you're looking for good posts the front page is the last place to go, r/atheism/new is a fairly enjoyable place if you ignore the meme and fb spam to get to the self posts.

Uh, I live in Mississippi and atheists don't get persecuted for their beliefs here. I know tons of old redneck porchsitters who are agnostics or atheists. The only people I see made fun of are "them dam Hindus, Muslims, Catholics, and Mormons." Nobody persecutes atheists here, they'll just tell you "you're going to hell" and then the atheists respond "there is no hell." That's that. I have tons of super christian family and my brother is an atheists. I've talked to him about it. He's never once felt persecuted. I call bullshit on this.

Hi, I'm in Alabama. I'm Caucasian, I have an adopted brother who is black, not a whole lot of racism here, to be honest.

You should hear one of my best friends that I grew up with, who now lives in L.A., he's black, you'd think he was living in the south the way he talks about racism there... irony?

[–]ajamison 8 points9 points ago

My 'favorite' reaction I got after telling someone here in Los Angeles I went to college in Nashville:

"Is everyone racist there?" "Uh, no. I never saw any, honestly." "I don't believe you."

I remember there were some threads where Christianity was compared to schizophrenia, which I found insulting. This kind of comparison made schizophrenia sound like a conscious choice, and in turn, oversimplified the seriousness of living with the mental condition.

So funny, so true. Politics, religion, hot topics all. Once you identify as belonging to one group or another, the other side will be WAY TOO HAPPY to tell you they know better than you.

I used to actively engage these conversations, but I find reddit more enjoyable when I leave the arguments out of it. Reddit's very interesting and I learn a lot from it. No one here will make me run from my beliefs.

I am so sorry :(

I am so very, very sorry.

I may not believe in your god, but I've got no business judging you for it. I don't have a valid reason for the way you've been treated, but I can at least tell you why--even if it's nothing but an excuse:

I for one have suffered vast mistreatment at the hands of religious people. At the time, the only respite I found was in a person who was an atheist. They showed me kindness. They showed me reason. They showed me rationality. They showed me temperance, and acceptance.

It moved me incredibly deeply.

But I was immature. I failed to grasp the truth of exactly why this noble individual inspired me so. The moment I felt strong enough to withstand the animosity, I lashed out at the people who hurt me. I showed them cruelty. I was unreasonable. I acted irrationally. I forsook them, and then I laughed.

I was one of those missiles on your tail, seeking vengeance for old wounds that you had no part in inflicting.

I know now that it was wrong to seek vengeance of any kind. Becoming an example upon them of the hypocrisy with which I had been treated was not a poetic irony, but a failing of personal integrity.

You are a human being.

There are things dear to your heart that defy empirical account.

You are an advanced, abstract, endlessly complex being--as are we all--a nigh impossible yet inevitable emergence of chemistry and pattern recognition and reconstruction.

I can have nothing but respect for you; for every breath, every blink, every gesture, every thought, every word you will ever speak is a subtle contribution to the grand mosaic of our species' experience. Our collective intention is progress, whether or not individuals of our world are even aware. You, too, contribute to the greatness of what it means to be--for in your mind, and in your heart, rests a masterpiece of cognitive engineering; something bigger than yourself: the idea of such a thing as a God.

Regardless of subject, the fact that we, any of us, as living matter, can share in any concept, and look upon it in the same light, is an inescapably beautiful truth.

You've crafted this by investing your will, and your hope, and your intellect--all of these each singularly astounding things in and of themselves--in what you truly, deeply feel to be the best interest of the entire universe of which you are a part. I lament that before recent days I had been unable to grasp this.

You deserve no such fate as to feel hunted. Today I welcome you--figuratively and collectively to mean all those who are religious--and ask humbly that you might consider my failure to appreciate the masterwork of your mortal dedication for the overwhelmingly inspiring thing that it truly is.

I may never be able to believe in your god directly--

...but I believe in you.

it's just that a lot of people think, myself included, that what is written in the bible and other holy books is only the word of man. if there were an entity with the infinite power and wisdom and knowledge to design the intricacies and complexities that exist as us, inside us, and as all of our surroundings for as far as you can imagine... why would he behave in such a petty and childish way as to care if we shaved or worked on sunday? why would he be so sociopathic as to tell that guy to kill his son only to see if he would? why would he be so needy for attention that he would require our woreship? why doesn't he ever actually help us? other than that guy who he helps in the football. and rappers. why doesn't he set us all straight rather than having different religions fighting in his name?

it's just very frustrating when progress is halted by religion. and it's frustrating to think that stories of creationism that have no basis in fact are being taught to children as the truth. when there is so much evidence, real evidence that you can see and touch to the contrary. i'm surprised that they are not trying to come in to the astronomy classes and tell people that the flat earth is the center of everything.

i don't need a book filled with stories of atrocity to tell me to treat people with the respect that i would like to receive myself.

I want to apologize as an atheist. Many atheist redditors try to push their beliefs onto other people, which is just a douchebag move regardless of what belief you hold.

[–]Clinto62 101 points102 points ago

I as a Christian would like to apologize for anyone who had a Christian try to force their beliefs on them. There is nothing wrong with having a conversation on religion but pushing your belifs on people is where it goes too far. There are people on both sides who are crazy and sadly that is all people on both sides see.
