While I certainly enjoy most of the shows portrayed in the pic I'd argue that most of them aren't really 'geeky' tv-shows.

Still a very nice piece of artwork though.

Yeah, The Office and 30 Rock (if I'm seeing those characters correctly) may appeal to some geeks, but I wouldn't call the shows geeky.

[–]CJGibson 161 points162 points ago

How I Met Your Mother doesn't strike me as particularly geeky either.

[–]JayceMJ 49 points50 points ago

NPH is basically cruise control for geeky.

[–]JoshMLees 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? The level of detail the show has and the fact that they start to deliver a joke, then literally wait an entire year to reveal the punchline is enough reason to call it a geeky show by itself. I must also mention Ted's entire character revolving around his love of one particular passion (architecture) and his constant need to find a woman who has seen Star Wars and who gets his references to Karate Kid. NPH's character also has the ultimate rich geek bachelor pad, complete with life-sized stormtrooper statue, and alphabetized porn collection. The show even creates it's own pop culture references within the show that never go away, like the fact that Robin used to be a Canadian pop star.

No, I wouldn't say that the show bills itself as a geeky show like Big Bang, nor is it a sci-fi or other genre show like Walking Dead, or Doctor Who, but it is a show which most modern geeks can relate to. Especially due to the amount of backstory they've created with a dozen flashbacks per episode, and with little to no retcons in sight! And these are what make it so much better than shows that say "Hey look! We just made a science joke! We're geeks! Please like our show! Please?" (Big Bang Theory anyone?)

[–]Kelaos 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree! I think himym does pander to people like geeks who will watch every episode and notice the subtle jokes.

Funny part is I do actually enjoy Big Bang Theory, but in a "turn off my brain" way. Where as if I try to watch HIMYM before bed I end up staying awake to finish it.

[–]Vaywen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...yeah its pretty geeky.

[–]wilsonx81 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The first episode of 30 Rock included a lightsaber and Tina Fey in a Princess Leia Organa costume and they keep including references to either sci-fi, fantasy and some comics as well as old movies and tv shows, so I would call it geeky.

Also, remember that there are TV geeks, movie geeks, etc.

[–]pillage 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure how 30 Rock isn't geeky.

Is Breaking Bad really a geeky show? Man gets cancer, and cooks meth to make money before he dies. Seems more like something that could happen in real life.

[–]Lil_Red_Riding_Hood 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love how your premise here is that situations that occur in geeky shows aren't likely to happen in real life. Seems like you're saying it's more likely that a man would get cancer and cook meth and kill people and put his whole family in danger before he dies than for a hot blonde chick to move next door to two physicists and be attracted to one of them.

[–]steinman17 5 points6 points ago

30 rock is 10x more geeky than Mad Men, which has little to no geek.

[–]dannypdanger 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they're "geeky" by the OP's definition in that they all have some kind of dedicated cult following.

[–]FrankReynolds 123 points124 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, but calling The Big Bang Theory a "geeky tv show" is like calling The Matrix a martial arts documentary.

[–]porn_flakes 122 points123 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The most apt description for that show is "nerd blackface".

[–]Maeglom 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think nerd minstrel show is a better fit.

[–]itsmeee 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the best description of the show I have ever heard. I've tried to explain to people how that show is not for nerds, but for people who don't know nerds and wow. Out of the park good sir! Upvotes galore!

[–]rynthetyn 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More to that point, my social sciences undergrad, MBA younger brother has been told by his coworkers that he reminds them of Sheldon because he uses words they can't understand and knows how to fix a computer.

I should point out that the only college level non-social science science class my brother has ever taken was a dual-enrollment community college chemistry of everyday life class that he took to graduate high school early, and the only math class he took in college was statistics. But because he uses big words and knows computers, to his coworkers he's just the same as Sheldon Cooper, theoretical physicist.

[–]DextrosKnight 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dunno, I found the show offensive at first, but I'm finding the more I have it on in the background, the more I actually find myself watching it and enjoying it. It's not something I make a point of watching yet, but there are times when I'm channel surfing that I'll see it and watch an episode.

[–]tonicandgin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i binged the whole series in about 2 weeks. it gets better. the first two seasons realyl are stunningly straightforward. they expand the cast in seasons 3 and 4, wich makes a huge difference. they don't rely on "hey, sheldon said something technical - HAHAHAHA"

[–]exus 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's with Reddits big circle jerk on hating on big bang theory? It has science humor, comic book humor, video game humor, and it's an effing TV show! Is it some weird counter culture backlash of "these are our hobbies, nobody else can see them!"? Ok, it's just a sitcom, I get it, it's no arrested development, but as far as humor about things I enjoy, and I assume much of Reddit does as well, I don't understand the hate.

[–]ChiperSoft 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think a lot of nerds find the show tremendously patronizing.

[–]jellypantz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I read "nerd blackface" again I'm going to start dispensing wedgies. And I don't even watch the show.

[–]tonicandgin 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

reddit hates it because it's not genuine science humor. they use real science words, but not the kind of humor scientists share with each other.

many people feel misrepresented by the show.

[–]Tigeroovy 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing is, it tries to be a show about geeks and nerds. But it seems to be all the nerd stereotypes, it's very surface humour. Whereas generally "real" nerds or geeks (especially the ones that are MORE into tv shows) are definitely more complex.

And it's just in the little details, like how they're all supposed to be nerds that would have likely all built their own computers and all of that, yet they have many sequential years of Norton Antivirus on the shelves when Norton is notoriously hated by computer nerds.

It comes off to me as it's a show written about nerds, by people who generally aren't. Like they googled "nerd" and gathered all of their info from that. Instead of being a show written BY nerds for nerds.

It just comes off very un-genuine to the people that are very passionate about good nerdy things.

At least that's my opinion on it.

[–]PostSincerity 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your opinion on this topic is gospel fact. A show written for nerds by nerds looks like "Spaced" and generally seems a little incomprehensible to anyone outside the target audience. That's not attractive to broadcast networks.

[–]latitnow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I would be okay with all of that if it were at least funny. But it's not. Not at all.

[–]Tigeroovy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree completely.

It's the same creator as Two and A Half men, so that tells you all you need to know right there.

[–]FrankReynolds 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A) It's patronizing as fuck and panders fake science and exaggerated "nerd culture" to an otherwise ignorant audience.

B) Fucking laugh track.

C) Lets be honest, the writing is absolutely abysmal and the acting is subpar at best.

[–]RavenLightholme 7 points8 points ago

[–]vegasmacguy 2 points3 points ago

I think it's wine in the spirit of the Dexter opening sequence. i.e. the wine is supposed to symbolize blood. So I guess you could say it's both.

[–]pinguis 18 points19 points ago

Or perhaps we can stop rehosting everything on imgur. I think blogspot can handle the traffic.

There was zero added value to make the submission an imgur link, instead of the blogspot link.

Except maybe for karma. Which is slowly (or not so slowly) destroying reddit.

[–]sandrakarr 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In blogspot's case (and, say, flickr and tumblr and a some other sites) I'm sure it is, but not everything is from a site with a ton of bandwidth. There are also pictures (and other links) that have a story behind it where a title line doesn't really do it justice.

[–]eavc 4 points5 points ago

I'd give lots of money for a House-Scrubs crossover.

Well there was that one episode where they basically made Dr. Cox into Dr. House.

Wow. I missed JD. When I saw your post, I had to go look again.

TV Shows that Geeks tend to like

FTFY

[–]filthysize 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I enjoyed most are the thematic pairings.

  • JD annoying House, presumably with hospital anecdotes.
  • Buffy trying to kill Bill.
  • Sheldon too shocked by Spock.
  • Chuck shooting the spy breeze with Sydney.
  • Jeff hating Brittany because he hates Glee.
  • Barney trying to look as cool as Don Draper.
  • Sociopath showdown between Dexter and Sherlock.
  • Cancer-ridden Walter White being examined by The Doctor.

[–]Alex_Plalex 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also the Dwight/BSG pairing.

[–]StuffedDoughboy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is my favorite pairing. The look on Dwight's face is great. Dwight and Gaius switching would be hilarious. Jim would make Gaius cry every episode and Dwight would have prevented the Cylon attack and he would have toasters employed/enslaved for his nationwide chain of beet farm themed bed and breakfasts.

I am disappoint.

[–]SeeNotC 3 points4 points ago

Look on the bright side--this means My Little Pony isn't technically "geeky".

[–]ares_god_not_sign 28 points29 points ago

Really? Big Bang Theory is a geeky TV show? It's blackface for nerds.

[–]lololnopants 0 points1 point ago

Really? Blackface?

Utterly ridiculous; yes, it's a geeky tv show.

[–]thecleverfoo1 4 points5 points ago

  • Firefly
  • Dr. Who

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • True Blood

Additions and corrections are welcome

Edit: JafffaCake is not only delicious, but has also compiled a more complete list. Check it out.

I'm pretty face-blind, but was able to recognize a lot of these. It really helped that Doctor Who is wearing a fez and is wielding his sonic screwdriver.

[–]DepletionRegion 1 point2 points ago

I think I could see House strangling most of the people there before the night was over....probably make friends with Dexter and hit on Buffy.

[–]towmii 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't consider most of these "geeky: TV shows, but good shows nonetheless.

[–]christophski 1 point2 points ago

To everybody bitching about how some of the shows here aren't "geeky enough", there is such a thing as a "TV-geek", and as I am one, every single show represented in OP's picture passes my test.

What's this American obsession with the work 'geek' and the weird and unnecessary connotations thereof? Just call it normal and educated like the rest of the world ha?
