Stack books on the other side of the bed to form a second night stand. The thickness of Bio 101 books make for a sturdy foundation.

I'm seeing a few comments being downvoted for saying that the depictions of Asians in this and similar memes that have become popular recently are racist.

As an Asian American born and raised in the U.S., I've been in situations where I found myself being the only Asian person in a group of White friends when the topic of race comes up. It's never easy speaking up when something makes you feel uncomfortable because you don't want to seem hypersensitive or unable to take a joke, and you don't want the situation to become awkward for yourself or your friends. But there is a lack of perception here that I think is central to understanding this disconnect.

The majority culture in the U.S. is from a White normative point of view. That is, "Whiteness" as a social construct in many Western societies, particularly in the U.S., is "a neutral and unquestioned backdrop."1

Many White people are uncomfortable when confronted with their own status as a "White" person, “What does it mean to be White?" (.pdf).

As that article states, "Few people of color react negatively when asked what it means to be Black, Asian American, Latino [...] Whereas Whites generally approach the question by saying things like "people are people," "we are all Americans." [To persons of color], Whiteness is most invisible when it is denied, evokes puzzlement or negative reactions, or is equated with normalcy, [because as a person of color] I do not find Whiteness to be invisible because I do not fit many of the normative qualities that make Whiteness invisible."2

In some cases the perception of being human almost becomes the same thing as being White.2

For racial and ethnic minorities where skin tone is a conspicuous marker, you can't just avoid thinking about your race or have other people stop perceiving you as racialized individual. Not having to think about your race, (including how it's perceived in job interviews, social settings, etc), is a tangible White privilege.

But that concept is very difficult for many White people to fully grasp because they've been, for the most part, shielded from having to experience overt or subtle racism on a continuing basis. I am an Asian male. I can empathize with the tenets of feminism and the discrimination endured by African American women; however, no matter how well-intentioned I may be, I will never know first-hand what it's like to be an African American woman in a society where the dominant culture is White and male. But that doesn't prevent me from wanting to understand the hardships they endure.

When people of color see memes like this, or the many ways in which some Redditors have made light of racial themes, it has a cumulative effect and can be deleterious. In social and critical race theory these types of occurrences are known as "microaggressions" as the abstract to this paper explains:

Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such communications when they interact with racial/ethnic minorities.

I think these (1, 2, 3, 4) videos are a kind of cultural response to everyday microaggressions built up over time.

This blog entry has a ton of useful links embedded within their commenting guidelines that can get you started if you're interested in learning more about this topic.

Also, here is another great article regarding White Privilege.

I think there are many people of color who tend to avoid discussing these types of issues with their White friends, neighbors or coworkers because of how quickly they're often derailed from the conversation. For example, I've been met with hostility and disbelief when I've conveyed my experiences with racism to some of my peers. When that happens, usually people will say something to the effect of, "Well, I never experienced..." and what they're really saying to me is that their personal experiences invalidate my own.

As mentioned above, many White people haven't learned about the concepts and vernacular of race and racial politics due to having been shielded from racism themselves, and because of this many people of color water-down the discussion. But my view point is that we're all adults here or at least mature enough to discuss these issues frankly and not shut down when these topics come up.

You make some good observations. I'm white, but I married an Asian and our children have the more dominant Asian features. It's something I consider every now and then, as they get older. I wonder...will they will see some of the racial issues that I personally have no experience with?

[–]Brian175 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm mixed, and oddly enough I get perceived in both ways as white or Asian depending on the eye of the beholder I suppose. There will be times people make racist comments not realizing you're part-Asian. Other times people will try to make you their token Asian guy, but the stereotypes end up not really making sense for someone that's mixed, but people don't understand the difference. I've literally had people think I was white, find out later I was part Asian and then start making Asian jokes like this meme. I actually dropped out of college from not being studious, I took a Ranger contract in the Army and successfully served 4 years in 1/75 Rgr Bn. I'm 6'0 physically fit, drink often and well quite frankly have one-night-stands quite often too. How's that for stereotypical? But I still get the same stupid jokes.

[–]RileyWon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

None of the above mentioned behavior could be construed as stereotypically asian however, none of it is anything to be proud of either.

[–]Brian175 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Minus my military service and the fact I work out daily, I'd agree. It is however fun and doesn't fit a mold. One redditors apparently don't believe in because the coolest an Asian can be is doing Calculus with a pen.

[–]RileyWon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it'd be cooler if you put down the gun and picked up a pen. Sadly society doesn't value big brains as much as big pectorals. While I applaud your military services, I am saddened that you chose to rebel against what seems to me a positive stereotype only to fall into a negative one. That of a meathead.

[–]Brian175 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm actually a full-time student now. Also, military service, even combat arms isn't about being stupid. To be successful, you have to be intelligent. I'm sad you think military service equates to being a meathead. It's probably why so few Asians serve our country.

[–]RileyWon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been eager to reply to this. For now, I will go so far as to say, I can recognize the merits of military service.

[–]RileyWon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, here's the thing, I was a bit rude and I'm going to level with you because I, in no way, mean to be trolling you. I'm not in the position to judge the intelligence of anyone based on their vocation. I have a great respect and admiration for servicemen. I myself was once an army cadet (although the cadets, admittedly, aren’t much of a comparison to the armed forces). I can't help but think your involvement in the military allotted you the resources to go back to school, a commendable transition. I think there is a need for the army and know that their services are utilized for more than just killing innocent people. However, being an American soldier in today’s world makes you an obvious tool of the military industrial complex and an admittedly easy target. As long as there are poor men willing to give their lives to fight for the interests of the rich, then there will always be those willing to abuse those services. You must realize that you do not serve your country so much as you serve the interest of the greediest among you. The reluctance to serve probably has more to do with the above mentioned and less to do with the meathead stereotype. My disappointment mostly stems from the seeming glorification of such things like "have one-night-stands quite often". Again I apologize for my rudeness but am I'm a little disgusted. I frankly believe that Asian or nay, the coolest anyone can be is through knowledge and study. You seem (now, I'm going out on a limb here and this is only my impression) to feel that working out everyday holds more merit than picking up a book. I myself am a huge advocate of an active lifestyle and work out regularly. Juice head, 6", school dropout, womanizer; none of those things should be a point of pride.

[–]Brian175 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How exactly is having one-night stands make you a womanizer? Is a woman that has one-night stands suddenly a 'manizer?' This logic is beyond incredible and a double standard. Obviously I must be deceiving these women and using them for my own benefit rather than things being mutual. I have to admit I come from a military family and probably idolize military service in a way. You're right, the military is a tool for policy makers. Whether this be for actual defense of our borders or defense of our economics abroad. But one thing I've come to learn is everybody works for somebody. At the end of day, we are a capitalist society and almost no matter what job you take, you are serving the interest of the rich. So am I proud that I workout everyday? Yes. And shock, I'm also fairly well read. They aren't mutually exclusive. Am I proud that I'm somewhat tall? Yes. Am I proud that I dropped out of school to take on an interesting and unique experience? Yes. Which one would likely garner more interest as a IAMA? I'm a 1/75 Batt boy or I go to college? And no I'm not a womanizer. My family is also upper-middle class and could afford my college tuition. Obviously I was going there before. I served with former Missouri Senator Vogel's son and also former USASOC Commander MG Brennan's son. Hardly poor serving the rich. They were both enlisted, Jake Vogel having a MBA and being more educated than many Asians that would look down on such service. I hate to say it, but you're close-minded to this way of life and so are many Asian-Americans.

There's a reason this meme doesn't work very well; for it to be like successful black man, there needs to be an actual subversion. Instead you're starting with the unexpected(an Asian getting some action? Actually I think you're onto something. I don't see it as offensive, but it's not as funny as it could be. It should start out hinting at the stereotype, then go the other direction, where the Asian gets the hot chick, etc.

[–]d3m0n0id 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats why it is funny though. We're use to memes like successful black man, where the bait and switch is common. Thus, when reading something like this, we're expecting it. Having it go in the obvious, albeit unexpected direction is where the humor is derived from

I like how using the "a successful black man is a joke" meme is an example of how to be considerate to blacks.

[–]Flowah 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That meme isn't saying that a successful black man is a joke. The joke is in exposing people's racist stereotypes about black people. You start off with something that many people will assume is something negative because the guy is black.

The turn is, it's not! He's just a successful black guy. The humor is derived in challenging people's racism, not in reinforcing it. The punchline isn't that the black guy is successful, it's the racism that gets turned on its head.

Although I agree with the general sentiment, I wouldn't call "smarter than me" a negative stereotype.

  1. All stereotypes are bad. They pigeonhole people based on their race.

It's true. I feel a little bad because being white is awesome. We get paid more for doing the same jobs, live life as a blank slate, and there's no glass ceiling. If I went to China I could make good money for just being white.

There are many threads on reddit that are just as insulting to African-Americans on reddit. It happens almost every weekend. I will say that Reddit mostly insults African-American women but they get some shots in on the guys not as many but some. Don't forget about http://www.reddit.com/r/niggers/ lovely subreddit that is active So don't worry you're not alone and I got the point that yes it sucks that if you work hard at something, succeed, it sucks that everyone blows it off because it's expected you would.

I am of a mixed background(black and white) and I don't find the Successful Black Man patronising at all, its actually one of my favorite memes.

Is there something I'm missing or are you just over-thinking the whole situation?

[–]TackyOnBeans 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference here is that the punchline is actually the black man being successful which is counter to what the stereotype of a black man is.

In this one, the punchline is the student being a nerd which reinforces the stereotype... not countering it.

[–]Tofinochris 4 points5 points ago

No, it's meta. Troubled Rebellious Asian subverts this usual type of meme by putting the expected thing for the picture on the bottom, while having a top that leads the reader to expect something else. Properly done, like this one, it's very clever.

Also, you fail to mention that the successful white man meme reinforces the stereotype of white in suits being thieves out to bank-fee and credit-bubble everyone to death. Your racial shit is showing :)

[–]Shitposter9000 0 points1 point ago

Yeah that successful white man stereotype is really subversive. I mean, did you hear about that 15 year old predatory lender that got tried as an adult?

[–]TheRiff 0 points1 point ago

I didn't get you at first, but I think what you mean is, in order for this meme to fit correctly with the others, he should seemingly be doing something nerdy, but then the second half of the sentence makes it turn out to not be nerdy at all?

Like, to use a quick (but not necessarily funny) example: "I'm very into this game ... because there's nothing like eating a deer you shot yourself."

Personally I don't care much, but what I don't understand is how everyone keeps complaining that it shouldn't be offensive and doesn't seem to realize the full implications of this picture.

Let's start here.. you think this is just about being smart/a nerd. No. Not really. It really implies that Asians would never get any- hence this use of "one night stand" versus the standard usage. That's what is bothering people.

And seriously, not everyone aspires to be the implied socially-awkward/socially deficient nerd presented here. If you're going to complain that people shouldn't be offended, at least get it right.

Yeah I understand your point, but I feel it is also appropriate to every once and a while, step back and think about what we are actually laughing at. My quam oddly enough is not that it is just racist, but also it validates people who choose not to learn. I understand, this is comedy, and so you do have to push some buttons but I find it a little embarrassing that we make intelligent people a punch line.

[–]ifrinne 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I chuckled at the wordplay on this. Not so much the attribution.

Any kind of racial stereotype patently operates by separating out certain people who look different from us (not white like us) and applying a blanket caricature intended to group them as a single entity.

Sometimes this is done to create a joke which some people might find pretty funny. But it shouldn't be surprising that people would find it offensive, especially when the underlying "humor" is in something as damaging and widespread as the "no-life Asian nerd who onry studies math" stereotype.

The joke is about a "nerd who doesn't get any". It might be offensive because it claims this is synonymous with being Asian.

I don't know why this meme has to be about race... It would still be funny if it was titled something else; like Troubled Rebellious Nerd, or Troubled Rebellious Dweeb.

If we did it this way, we would picking on a subculture instead of a race, and it would be very racially including! We can pick on blacks, asians, whites, indians, hispanics, middle-easterners, pacific islanders etc...* All at the same time!*

It's much more efficient this way.

I am so fed up with the relentless HURR ASIANS DON'T HAVE SEPARATE PHONEMES FOR THE CONSONANTS L AND R, AND ALSO, THEY ARE GOOD AT SCHOOL bullshit. Regardless of my identification with and pride in my ethnic heritage, I would really prefer to be considered an individual first and an Asian second. [–]DOGTOY_ 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The issue isn't the jokes themselves. It's the underlying attitudes that are revealed by trends in what jokes are accepted and what aren't. Fact is, on Reddit you can make fun of asians as much as you'd like and no one will disapprove. You can't do that with any other race. Just look at the difference between 'Successful black man,' 'Successful white man' and 'Asian nerd' memes.

I can take a joke as well as the next guy, but there's plenty of closet racists here who hide behind the same veil as those telling jokes to be funny. Sorry, but not everyone who tells racist jokes is a champion and herald of free speech.

[–]thezompus 11 points12 points ago

The less fuss one makes about this sort of thing, the more it goes on. Because if us Asians are laughing, then it must be okay to keep making that joke, right?

[–]artydecor 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the reason Dave Chappelle quit his show. He realized that there were too many white folks in the audience that were laughing at him rather than with him. And how they were using his jokes to justify their racism.

Chappelle had, essentially, become uncomfortable with playing a black fool for white audiences. Upon his return from Africa, he told Oprah Winfrey a revealing anecdote: While Chappelle acted out a sketch that featured him as a pixie in blackface, he heard a white crew member laughing a little too hard. This was, apparently, the galvanizing moment that caused Chappelle to reassess the intent of his comedy, and the kind of laughs he was giving his audience. As he told Time, "I want to make sure I'm dancing and not shuffling."

[–]Arnouphis 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck that, get your gun back out. White people are laughing at you, not with you, they are making fun of you and wanting you to be cool with it. They say it shouldn't hurt, it's a "positive stereotype", that's bullshit. It makes you look like dorks, it pigeon holes you, it puts them in a "cool" position of superiority over you. It's not cool, it's very racist. Asian people are not stereotypes. Why are white people the only ones in this society that are afforded the privilege to be seen as diverse people who can't be tied down to a stereotype? Don't perpetuate this stereotype with apathy.

[–]tweedyimpertinence 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

God no, I'm not cool with it, and I should hope I never become apathetic to it! I'm with you, mostly I'm just too hungry and tired right now to start firing at the moment (the perceived leniency of my position is more a result of my physical condition and not the opinions I hold). Also, I do find real-life arguments to be more rewarding-- but more importantly, thanks for the fighting words. I really am fucking sick of stereotypes.

I know what you mean, I rarely have conversations about race on the internet because it just frustrates me to no end and it's tiring. I have 4-5 subreddits I go to and I know I won't get offended by those on a daily basis. Every once in a while I hit the all button though.

[–]fiat_lux_ 11 points12 points ago*

Normally, I would say the same, but if you think about it, this "chill out" attitude is partially why Asians are so stereotypically impotent (politically, culturally, socially, physically, etc), divided, and easy to push around. Asians are always so reasonable. But... Sometimes, being reasonable means you know when to be (or act) unreasonable.

Dude just because you're asian you don't have the right to speak for all other asians. I'm black and there's nothing I hate more than some other black guy on the Internet who says its okay to make stupid racist jokes.

If you ever make a joke about white people on the Internet, you'll immediately get a bunch of people whining about "PC"-ness and bitching about how its okay to be racist against only white people. Even though in reality its the other way around.

Also, it really fucking pisses me off that the 30 people who upvoted you are probably all white guys trying to justify racism. Fuck off.
