Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Also king of most frequent, useless updates.

Nah, I think java wins that.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well... I use Java more, but you are right, is there really a need for an update every week basically?

[–]rabidbot 7 points8 points ago

Your java actually updates? Mine just trys and fails, I keep hoping the little guy will finally update one day, he has being trying so hard for so long now.

Sorry I have to hijack the third top comment too! You're all unobservant morons! I totally stole this from the "top" section and reposted it. For your combined stupidity, I am downvoting every comment in this thread :-) Huehehehehehue

Enjoy downvote oblivion, you dumb, pretentious neckbeards! :-)

Yeah, thanks. It was early in the morning, and I was typing it on my iPhone :0P

You can use Google Chrome as a PDF reader. I imagine Firefox would work too.

[–]RHAINUR 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Google Chromes PDF reader is powered by Foxit, actually.

Firefox does not have a built in pdf reader

Thanks, but it seems that the problems are the .pdf format and Flash. Not Acrobat. Interesting read nonetheless.

[–]punch-kicker 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's meant for people who think if the icon is on the desktop it's installed on the computer

[–]wretcheddawn 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That brings up a good point actually. Why is it that on my phone, I get a nifty thing will all the apps sorted that I can just scroll through to find what I want, while on the PC, I have the multi-level start menu, where 8% of the programs are there, and the rest are nested an additional 1-2 layers deep by product name (logical) or company name (illogical). Also, why are product manuals in the start menu. Does anyone ever think "I am not using VLC right now, but I'd really like to read the manual for it."

Then there's Silverlight - why is that even in the start menu, I'm less likely to ever start that manually than even Acrobat.

Well, I don't have a mac, and I don't want all the icons on the desktop, either.

[–]G3ck0 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not. It's a separate thing that opens over any window you currently have open.

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well the start menu is completely pointless now anyway, since you can just type the first few letters of the program you want in the search bar and press enter to open it. When I first got Windows 7 I never thought I'd use it, but I never open anything any other way now.

[–]wretcheddawn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That could be the problem... Windows XP here.

What about "My Briefcase". I still don't know what it did.

[–]Dirt_Bike_Zero 5 points6 points ago

I never used it, but I'm pretty sure it's for syncing files with a laptop or removable drive.

Yup. Second place belongs to winrar.

[–]wnecsdamion 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

winrar used to be my app of choice, then a co-worker showed me 7-zip. I don't know where exactly it stands in terms of bloatware/crap, all I know is I like it.

[–]perb123 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The question was what you need the icon on the desktop for.

[–]wnecsdamion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You need the icon so when you feel the need to clean you have something to start with. It gets the ball rolling.

I just don't get why Adobe doesn't just put in the checkbox for 'No Desktop Icon'

Its like they are a child star all grown up, but they can't leave the spotlight so they force their way into you head but making sure the name is in front of you call the time.

[–]vincentrevelations 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

winrar is actually pretty good. There's the nag screen, which turns people off, but that can be easily cracked. Or you can buy it like I did decades ago.

I haven't tried 7-zip in a while, but it didn't support drag and drop, which was a no-go for me.

[–]wretcheddawn 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

7-zip does have an awkward interface, but it supports any compression format people actually use. It's like the Vlc of compression tools.

[–]Squishumz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It lacks a context menu in Windows 7 as well, or maybe I'm just missing it. But I keep it around for the number of formats it supports.

[–]Panguin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure if I installed an add-on or what, but I've got it.

Let me look real quick.....

NINJA EDIT: Here you go! You have to go into the options, but I found directions. Happy zipping!

[–]Squishumz 0 points1 point ago

But, seriously, thanks.

Desktop item?

[–]BellendSebastian 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dunno, since I do print design, having both Reader and Acrobat Pro as icons means I can drag a pdf into either one to open it without reassociating the entire file format.

Necessary to make sure that the pdf forms and javascript all works fine, since clients don't tend to have Acrobat Pro.

[–]ch4os1337 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What does Acrobat Pro even do? I ask that as a person who owns it and still doesn't know.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It allows you to create PDF's.

[–]ch4os1337 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I, oh. That makes sense. Thank you.

[–]BellendSebastian 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not just that, since a number of different programs can create them.

It gives you a whole bunch of extra features, most used by me is for defining how a document should open, savable forms in an editable document, embedding of javascript to automate certain tasks and editing existing pdf files.

Outside of print design you don't really have a use for it, but in the industry, it's pretty damn useful.

[–]holyshitisthatmytoe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

right click -> open with ->choose app. no ineffecient dragging something onto an icon on your desktop

[–]BellendSebastian 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's on my dock, which is no different really. And it's as quick or quicker to just drag a file from finder.

[–]Czulander 1 point2 points ago

it's advertising.

I have deleted it numerous times and it keeps reappearring! (after every update - which is very often). I guess we should give it the 'most stubborn desktop item' award as it refuses to go away for long! It is the 'Terminator' of icons! I delete it and it says 'I 'll be back!'. (and it does come back)

[–]Fr4t 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always kept it on desktop so I wouldn't forget I have it installed... even though I don't know why I would want to remember this...

[–]keindeutschsprechen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. This icon is the only way I'm reminded to type "msconfig" and remove it again from the startup.

[–]dszordan 0 points1 point ago

That smiley face in OPs title shouldn't exist. I'm never happy about that icon.

[–]Le_Petit_Lapin 0 points1 point ago

It does ask you if you want one... ಠ_ಠ

[–]FloppY_ 3 points4 points ago

It actually doesn't iirc

Each update will create a new icon without prompting you if you deleted the old one..
