I miss both comics. I sincerely love Calvin and Hobbes, but this was a fantastic follow-up story. I hope one day he'll continue it.

[–]Curly92 9 points10 points ago

Those are really nice. Although in the last panel of the 4th one, I think it should have had bacon dragging Hobbes along in teddy form, like it would've done when Calvin's parents were watching. At least I think it would've been like that. It's been too long since I've read Calvin and Hobbes, but I'm about to fix that.

Edit: I just realized it wouldn't have made sense for Hobbes to speak then, so I kinda redact this comment.

[–]ReleaseTheLardBeast 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Remember Calvin is watching too, Calvin sees Hobbs as a living tiger...so it does make sense. (or he did)

[–]Curly92 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess so, I just figured since Calvin is the parent now, but that makes sense too. Of course there really is no reason to nit pick these comics. They did a good job.

[–]GeneralGeneric 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought the same thing too. I think the fact that adult Calvin can see the living Hobbes, when his parents couldn't insinuates that his parents were more boring/distanced, which I don't think they were. They were good parents.

[–]xiaorobear 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a professional-looking horror comic, set following a girl walking home alone at night. The panels are set up as one endlessly vertical page, a neat format that could only be shown on a computer. And, uh, let's just say that, as you scroll down, it takes advantage of a few other computer-only techniques to enhance the scare-factor a bit. Very effectively, I might add. Very very effectively. As in, those stupid videos or games or whatever where you're supposed to watch something closely and then there's a jump scare and a scream have nothing on this— this has suspense, and then pretty much the most effective scare I've had on the internet.

imo it's worth a look, if only to admire the technique the artist used to perfect the scare. If people start reading comics on tablet devices, there are real possibilities in this. Of course, prepare for terror. And there's sound. Headphones on was definitely freakier.

Me too man, me too. When I was younger my life wasn't so great, I went through a really difficult period in elementary/middle school. The first time I read Calvin and Hobbes it blew my third-grade mind. I related to him on so many levels. The powerful imagination, the social difficulties, the incredibly active mind, make-believe worlds. When I read Calvin and Hobbes for the first time something clicked in my head, I realized that I was seeing my own situation from a birds eye view. My similarities to Calvin are uncanny, I now own the entire collection (often read, and sometimes cry when I do) and there are countless strips where I did the EXACT same thing, or close to it at least. Things are great now, but whenever I read that comic strip, that fucking magnificent comic strip such an incredible menagerie of emotions surfaces. When I read these something else clicked, almost like me seeing my past play out, and what it finally culminated to, who I am now. Thank you so much for posting this. Thank you

TL;DR I read Calvin and Hobbes for the first time in third grade during a bad period of my life. It changed everything because I related to Calvin so much. Seeing this let me see what my life has lead up to, culminating in who I am now

I too was helped by Calvin and Hobbes through a deeply displaced portion of my childhood. I always wanted a best friend that was as fun as Hobbes. He was my first tattoo when I turned 18, and now I'll always have a buddy with me.

They're good. But maybe treading on Watterson a little. Especially given his views on licencing them.

[–]AceAndAJack 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But at least let us have this. It could have been a cartoon, or a video game. Paying a short homage to one of the most nostalgic things in (all of) our childhoods shouldn't be criticized. Aside from that point, continuation, when done well, is usually highly praised for emulating the style of the original artist.

[–]DroogyParade 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it couldn't. Wanna know why? Calvin and Hobbes' voice. To everyone they are different. It would ruin it for me if it wasn't the exact voices I heard in my mind while reading the comic strips.

Maybe a silent video game. No voice actors, just music, sound effects and word bubbles.

[–]dontwanturvalidation 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah not even that. The sounds associated wouldn't be just right. I think you're missing the point - calvin and hobbes was about imagination, and I think thats where Watterson wants it to remain. Because nothing is as alive and rich as your imagination.

[–]harris5 1 point2 points ago

Who is cutting onions in here?

Seriously, this is dangerous territory. If you mess this up we will be quite displeased. That said, so far this is excellent. It still has that sweet sense of innocence that Calvin and Hobbes managed to bring out. I also like how Calvin is now an adult, dealing with adult issues. This is something I feel like a lot of us who grew up reading Calvin and Hobbes can identify with. We are facing debts, jobs, taxes, and other responsibilities, but we really do want to explore the torrential guildovdn galaxy.

It would be wise to introduce some antagonists. Susie and Calvin have to be adults, and as much as we love them, there will be some tension between them and Bacon. Also things like school and work, as well as a variety of imaginary foes, as well as Hobbes can make things more interesting. You can slip in subtle reminders of the original, and touch on similar themes, but it is no good to rely on it. Add new material and value, make it worthwhile. I don't need a new strip to tell me the old one was great, I can still go back and read the old one. But I would love a well done modern version of it.

[–]toejam10 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. This strip seems to really be playing on the nostalgic feeling readers will be going into a Calvin and Hobbes-based sequel. This author has only (so far) managed to maintain one tone, all of which have resulted in Calvin reflecting on his childhood with the same feeling the author is trying to evoke from their readers. Waterson mastered the subtlety of varied tone, which these series have, I would argue, failed to provide. These comics are good for what they are, but I would be pleased to see myself disproven when I say that I don't see much coming from their future.

[–]zarrel40 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you but I wish for so much more..

The excitement I got from reading these 4 was unreal.

[–]jfinkleton 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The author actually finished this comic up awhile ago and the Bacon and Hobbes comics aren't the focal point. He was just paying tribute to his favorite cartoonist and actually stated that he didn't want to do more, because it wasn't Calvin and Hobbes. He was just saying thank you.

I just wonder what Mr. Watterson himself would think of the comics. I would hope he can see the love that the "Pants are Overrated" group has for the comics and they're not trying to capitalize on anything.

Following the naming format of the original, Bacon is logical. Thomas Hobbes, John Calvin, and Francis Bacon.

The author also originally commented that if anyone would name their child Bacon, it would be Calvin.

So glad someone answered that. Loved how these comics were done, but couldn't for the life of me figure why Calvin would name is kid "Bacon".

Man, these need to be shown to Bill Watterson, if he could ever be tracked down. They'd be sure to restore some hope in humanity to him.

You could assume her name is Franchesca, which would be shortened to Frances. Calvin studied philosophy in college, and nick-named her Bacon. So Susie comes home to find a 3 year old running around going, "Mommy, Mommy, I'm Bacon! I'm Bacon!"

As someone currently trying to piece together a college thesis based on Calvin and Hobbes, thank you. Every so often I need a little reminder. =]

Sweet copyright infringement. Bill Watterson would hate this.

i am going to voice my unpopular opinion here. i don't particularly like these comics, as much as i love calvin and hobbes.

the ever-persistent magic of childhood imagination that makes calvin & hobbes what it is, is lacking in these. in part 2, bacon moans about her parents being weird when they're doing exactly the sort of thing that made us love calvin in the first place. she and hobbes go outside, and she just wants to play baseball. the way i see it, these comics are about a boring kid who happens to have a dad we all love -- and therefore we see her as awesome too.

and not to mention, as someone else mentioned here, this is copyright infringement that bill watterson would hate.

[–]Rabble_Arouser 1 point2 points ago

Completely agree.

I'd go so far as to say this work is hackery. Watterson would hate it. Didn't I read something about a cease and desist the last time this was posted?

Does anyone else remember a random strip where Calvin is playing with tinker toys (being a vengeful god, of course!) and his mom says that she bets he grows up to be an architect? To me it looks like he did indeed, anyone else? Makes me so happy.
