Seriously though - can we get a discount?

[–]ImRichieDagger 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got that all the time when I used to work at Best Buy. There was a guy I never talked to in college that found out and tried to become my friend just to ask me to buy him stuff.

[–]MasticationMan 8 points9 points ago

Can you get me some Beats? I got like... thirty bucks, bro.

[–]ComoImports 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just ask why the fuck anyone would want beats in the first place

[–]QuestionableRag 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was at best buy today and the Beats Pro(The $400 ones) actually sound pretty good and are comfortable. Of course I don't know if they are $400 worth of good or not though.

[–]ComoImports 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Beats pro aren't half bad but they definitely aren't $400 good

[–]FrenchFriedMushroom 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From someone who works at best buy, I can tell you that we make more than $200 on each pair of $400 headphones we sell.

There is ridiculous markup on headphones. For the money I pay for them with my discount they are pretty good headphones. Not any better than a cheaper pair of Grado or Sennheiser phones, but for what I can get them at they are pretty good priced.

Can you get me a discount?

[–]blix797 7 points8 points ago*

Beats are actually decent quality, and it does really well in the bass frequencies. That being said, it's horribly horribly overpriced (they're produced by Monster, so no big surprise). I'd go instead with the Sennheiser HD 555 for a little over half the price.

[–]Schwinehund 3 points4 points ago

I fucking love Sennheiser! I've never had a bad pair

[–]ItGotRidiculous 2 points3 points ago

Upvote for Sennheiser!

Wow, I got some of those new at Electronics Expo for $60 like a year and a half ago. Must've been a deal? Shit.

[–]Apochromat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And then mod the HD555's so they become identical to the more expensive HD595's. It's easy to do.

[–]Whoagtfo 0 points1 point ago

Along with that, if you get anything that isn't the "Pros" (which are 399.99) they will break within that month that you purchase them. Studios and Solos are made of plastic and are highly flimsy. I work at best buy and the Monster Rep has to come in like twice a month to switch out the broken ones for the new ones.

[–]darknecross 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got some Senn555's for $60 on Head-fi. Best $60 I've spent.

[–]ImRichieDagger 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure thing. Just send the money and I'll take care of it.

[–]astillview 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, what type of discount do you get?

[–]Whoagtfo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"5% above cost" unless regular price is better.

[–]deux_live_crew 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought the discount topped at "no more than 50% off" now.

[–]Whoagtfo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's the newly added, unfortunate rule.

[–]BrohanZohan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. Funny thing is that I had people coming up to me for 2 years (after I quit) asking for discounts.

[–]darkangelle 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I worked for Best Buy and had lots of "friends" (who never spoke to me) suddenly send me tons of messages on FB asking when they could drop by the store to buy TV/laptop/headphones/stuff with my discount. Fuck those guys.

[–]thebeat42 3 points4 points ago

Discounts? Amateur. Embezzlement is where the real men tread.

[–]sugar0coated 2 points3 points ago

[–]XeonProductions 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately you can't discount electronics much because they're already selling near wholesale.

[–]Nyrin 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might be surprised.

This is true for a lot of the "big ticket" items (at my Best Buy, laptops were commonly sold at a small loss, which made the "employee discount" price, which was wholesale +5%, more expensive than retail), but accessories and peripheral items for those big ticket items will be marked up 50%, 100%, or even 3000% ($30 ethernet cable, I'm looking at you).

[–]King_Felix_Kourt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I work for a cell phone company and get this too. Or, "Hey so my phone is doing this weird thing can you fix it?.." or "I got this charge on my bill...". Sorry can't really help you there, I don't know anything about troubleshooting phones and can't access your account! Sorry lol.

[–]faceinthegrass 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A guy I know that got fired from Best Buy would charge people full price but would actually be charging with his discount and keeping the extra cash. Pretty genius before he got caught and banned from every Best Buy.

[–]Jean-Baptiste1763 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Discount?

[–]uhleckseee 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bingo. Been working at one for 3 years and my family STILL thinks I can get discounts on laptops and TV's. In fact, no, no I cannot. Cables, accessories, and anything Monster brand I get killer discounts off of though. lol

[–]ENKC 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, the HDMI cables would go for less than a thousand with discount?

[–]uhleckseee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lol, significantly cheaper. It makes you realize just how much fucking commission salespeople get when you can get half off of Beats headphones (made by Monster).

[–]highonsixfourohseven 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On the Studio models... we make about $19.50 a pair. Also SPIV... SPIVS are amazing.

[–]FrenchFriedMushroom 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just for some inside information. I worked at best buy before they changed their discount policy. Before it was 5% over cost, and I got an HDMI cable that we sold for $100 for $10. Core items (Tv's, PC laptops, etc.) there is little to no discount. Apple products there is no discount, but we do make money on them. IIRC for a MacBook Pro 15" that retails for $1700 best buy makes ~$200 in profit. For PC laptops there is little to no margin (at most $50).

I used to work for Summit Racing and would get that shit all the time. I'd hook someone up if they were friends already. But I couldn't believe how many people tried to "friend" me just because I worked there.

[–]KaseyKasem 1 point2 points ago

Hey, if you still know people that work for Summit, I need a connection. I'm gonna need one of them there discounts on a B&M quicksilver. jk jk jk.

[–]themitch22 0 points1 point ago

Working at Fry's (which I don't recommend) we had a $500 cap on our discounts per year. It was cost + 10%. Cables/components/accessories are marked up high, car audio was jacked up high too. I bought tons of stuff on my discount but I got most of my discounts by finding awesome stuff that was discontinued and marked way down, like a $5 eye-fi card. I gave my friends discounts all the time since I didn't make enough working there to afford big items

Do the same thing I told everyone else to do, there are better deals online. slickdeals, amazon, monoprice, newegg, whatever.

Recently started a managers job at a video games retailer. Today alone I had 3 "people I know" come in and ask me to give their relatives jobs.

For fucks sake just because I know you doesn't automatically make your nephew a suitable candidate for a job. And better yet, I'm sure each of them realise that I would therefore have to fire existing staff to do so. One guy in particular (a friend of a former colleague), portrayed a look of disbelief when i told him to drop in his resume, and that I had no immediate plans to dismiss any of my existing staff.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe they expected the typical Mafia nephew job.

[–]jarwastudios 0 points1 point ago

When I worked at Best Buy, I rarely got asked for the discount, instead, because I worked at an electronics store it was: "hey, can you fix problem XYZ with my computer?" I sold cameras.

[–]SoCo_cpp 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Poor bird-brains. Everyone knows you shop in the electronics store, then buy it for much cheaper online.

I had to start my own side business because of people asking me for troubleshooting tips. Its great because most of the problems are easy. Thats 30/hr min. of one hour. Take that r-shack.

What's greedy about that? Whenever I work a job with a discount I let everyone I know use it. Companies still make a profit off the merchandise, and it is more than likely something the person would have gotten elsewhere or not bought it.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Using the employee discount is not wrong.

But asking an acquantice to use it for you is.

[–]ape_ck -2 points-1 points ago

comes with the damn territory. Help your friends out.

[–]FrenchFriedMushroom 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just to let you know, using a discount for a friend can, and will, get you fired if management finds out. The discount is usually only for you and your spouse, and gifts.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would...if they would help me out.
