The question is; will you turn into High Expectations Asian father/mother when you grow up?

Makes me sad that I've raised my kids and the only value they've remembered is "YEAH, THIS IS AMURICA. FUCK YEA PABST BLUE RIBBON!". Maybe I should have taught them that freedom doesn't mean we should lack discipline...

My wife and I are morbidly obese, my kids are ignorant racists who never call. I'm in my late 40's and it's too late to change all the mistakes in values that I've committed.

As a born and bred redneck, I've been raised as a racist against Asians and other cultures, but I've also started to see how ignorant it looked after I lurked reddit and atheism.

How does it feel to come to the realization that you are/were racist? Did you always know, and just dismiss it? Or did you not think of it as racism? Honestly just curious, and glad you've turned it around.

Also, it's never too late to get into shape. It'll be hard, but it's never too late: /r/loseit.

Father-son relationships are incredibly powerful. High Expectations Asian father can have a non-repressive son if his High Expectations don't degrade their relationship.

I read about a study once that found adult males having decreased levels of stress if they reported having a good relationship with their father, as opposed to high levels of stress under a bad relationship.

[–]knuxo 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your relationship with your kids doesn't have to be "Cat's In the Cradle." You can call them, have them visit, take them to an art show or a relevant movie/play. If you're in your late 40s and learning to your let go of your ignorance, then your kids -- still just young adults -- can certainly follow your example.

[–]smoonc 7 points8 points ago

I'm sure there are further steps you can take to even partially offset whatever damage to society your mistakes have caused. Giving up by saying it's too late now is both cowardly and lazy, and is just another (huge) mistake you're piling on top of your other ones.

[–]NothingsShocking 4 points5 points ago

I think he's saying it's too late to instill good values in his kids who seem to be out of the house already. I do think it's admirable that he recognizes his own shortcomings, a difficult thing for anyone to do. I hope they can lose the weight, and in turn I think it will garner respect from friends and family.

Meh, most Asian-American women abandon their cultural heritage. How many Asian-American women do you see dating or married to AA men? They almost always seek out white people and spite their parents' (especially their fathers') wishes.

lol, study for another class? I'm sure that's what it looked like on the outside.

I knew a lot of asian kids that did homework 10 minutes before class because they could and because high school was ridiculously unchallenging compared to the 'cram school' shit our parents pushed onto us. That or it's to study for an upcoming test. Honestly, anyone would ditch art class to study for a math test worth 40% of their grade.

[–]Ag-E 0 points1 point ago

The first year of college (state) was basically a continuation of high school. First test I really had to study for was an organic chemistry test.

[–]XXShigaXX 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In all seriousness though, I've always wondered why a lot of people negatively say Asians look the same (i.e. WHY ALL YOU ASIANS LOOK THE SAME?!). It's the same concept of saying all white people look the same.

[–]HeinousHyena 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm Asian and I don't think Caucasians look the same. I think Asians do though, mainly because we all have dark hair/eyes.

But on the other hand, it might be because I grew up in New Zealand. The protagonist in "Mao's Last Dancer" is Asian and when he visited America, he mentioned that all Caucasians look the same, and all have big noses IIRC.

[–]wozawoza 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is probably because you grew up in New Zealand. It's all about where and who you grow up with. Kind of like language acquisition, if you're aware of it. So generally people within different (or even the same) races will tend to look similar to each other depending on if you were exposed to them a lot growing up, or not.

That kid is a scum. Before these photos were released he was trying to act like GGG saying how bad the riot was for our reputation and all that crap. And shortly after his wall got flooded by pictures of him breaking down windows and what not.

Also, I think he posted a picture of himself holding a hockey stick "trying" to stop other people from breaking the windows. And other people posted the rest of the series and it turns out he was the one that begun destroying the windows.

Gazing urgently out the rain-streaked window, Lieutenant Davis said, "I guess you could say he's... a menace to propriety."

"Jesus, not this again," Nichols murmured.

"We gotta find this guy and nail him."

"This isn't healthy. I'm genuinely concerned for the state of your mind."

"Got a problem with my punning? Bring on the brain."

I like Asians because they are very successful in America despite the horrendous racism that seems to keep the other minorities down indefinitely.

[–]iamafermata 240 points241 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Asians face a lot of discrimination and racism in America, it's just a different type of racism. Part of the reason is because no one whistle-blows jokes, slurs and stereotypes, because they're interpreted as being "nice". The notion that all Asians are nerdy, academically oriented, or math/computer geniuses may work well for you if you're in one of those fields, but if you're in a people-skills type field not so much. American-born Asians also have the "forever-immigrant" thing working against them. Ask your born-in-the-US Asian friends sometime how many times they're asked what country they're from. Asians are often percieved as immigrant regardless of how many generations their family has been here, and understood as less "American" in general. And the "Asians are successful" thing is panning out pretty similarly to anti-semitism in Europe, quite frankly, with the "greedy, money-centric and stingy" stereotypes all at play. This is just North Asian we're talking about, too. If you're Indian, Central Asian or middle-Eastern, since 9/11 that's almost worse than being black in this country.

[–]dipperino 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

agreed. Even when multiculturalism is promoted, there is always a sense of implied racism. Often subtle, but lingers like a bad breath.

I have the reverse - I was born in Japan, but ethnically I'm an olive skinned Italian. Confuses the hell out of people. I once had to go to a government office 3 times because no matter what document I brought, they couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that yes, I was born in Japan...I have naturalization papers...but I'm not Japanese....oooh! scary! I ended up having to bring 2 birth certificates, naturalization papers and my passport. All to transfer title of a car. Go figure. OTOH, move to a Navy town and they treat it like it's a perfectly normal circumstance.

I would have to disagree. Though I'm not Asian myself, I grew up in a predominately (60%) Asian high school. Since Asian is the norm, there was absolutely no "forever an immigrant" mentality going on with the accent-less students, but possibly for their parents. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that it probably all comes down to where you are.

Because you'd probably be interested, this high school with high levels of Asians was actually rated the top public high school in the nation last year.

[–]drunkpandabear 18 points19 points ago

It doesn't matter where you grow up. I've lived in the SF Bay Area my entire life, where a third of the people are Asian, and a large chunk were born here. I still get questions about where I'm from. I always say "here" and I always get the follow-up question of "no, really, where?"

[–]artydecor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like you said, your situation is quite rare. Asians make up less than 4% of the US population, so unless they stay in California their whole lives, most Asians will be in areas where they're the minority.

[–]TokenRedditGuy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also grew up in 60% Asian school, k-12. I also went to a UC which has >40% Asian. I've never been asked where I was from. I do frequently get asked where my parents are from, and they are correct to ask that question in my case.

[–][deleted] 78 points79 points ago

Yes to everything about this. It's okay to be racist towards asians especially here in reddit. Call a black person a nigger on reddit? Downvote. Make racial jokes about asians? Upvote!

And as for comparing the successful Asians to anti-semitism makes perfect sense. People like to call us Korean Americans the Jews of Asia because of the Korean diaspora, relative financial success, strong ties to family and religion and often failure to assimilate into the local culture.

Yes, it's true. We are the most hot-blooded of the East Asian cultures.

Makes me wonder how many derogatory references about black people get downvoted to oblivion, because I see upvoted ones almost anytime I visit reddit.

When black racism is no longer the benchmark upon which all other racism is defined, I might agree with you. But then I imagine, as far as the US is concerned, latin americans and muslims are next in line...

The difference here is that I think a lot of Americans know that it's bad to be racist against mexicans, muslims and blacks but it's still funny or okay to be racist towards asians because we've been the model minority.

Call a black person a nigger on reddit? Downvote.

Except that this doesn't happen... As long as the usage appears at least a little bit "edgy" or ironic, Reddit seems to have no problem with this. Not to mention the "Did anyone else successfully guess the criminal's race?" sort of posts I see upvoted on Reddit fairly regularly. Or the whole "Ghetto Good Guy Greg" that was around a few weeks ago (thankfully not much longer than that).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that Reddit isn't racist with regard to Asians - just that it seems to display a fair amount of equality in its racism.

EDIT: subject-verb agreement

I'm an asian and I see far more jokes about blacks on reddit than about asians.... And I don't care for either because they're JOKES, not racist remarks intended to offend people. People need to get a sense of humor...

Yeah. I see them just way too much. Replacing the "L"s with "R"s has just annoyed the crap out of me. It's not funny and it's certainly overplayed. As for when they replace "R"s with "L"s, that's just being ignorant when making a joke.

Every Asian dude I've met is a lot like yearbook superhero Kevin Chang. He was probably not treated with open hostility, but treated just "bad enough" to become a bit cynical.

Most people that ask Asians what countries they are from probably wants to ask what country they originated from, but they have no way of knowing you are born here so they asked what countries are you from.

I don't see a problem with this and I am Asian. It's like asking an European what country he's from because I can't tell from his language. Maybe I genuinely want to know?

[–]ejhops 1 point2 points ago

I live in Vancouver, which has an extremely high Asian population. Add the fact that I am a UBC Chem student, I am a white female minority in all of my classes. Even so, the "forever-immigrant" thing is such a huge reality here. There has been a Chinese presence in BC for well over a hundred years. There are families living here that have been here for far longer than mine, and yet they will often be asked what country they are from, and if they like living here in Canada. One reason I think this continues, at least at UBC, is that there are hundreds of Chinese immigrants here as well. And it's much easier to make sweeping assumptions than to actually treat everyone you meet as a completely new individual.

That all said, I laughed out loud pretty hard at this one. A friend of mine an hour ago complained at how our midterm was on our "double lab day" because she couldn't skip her classes to study for it. To be fair though, she isn't a "typical Asian" - she was born in Israel and moved here 8 years ago.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points ago

Speaking as a first-generation Asian-American, I think your stance is faulty. Asian-Americans don't "do better" than black Americans because we're inherently better, it's because Asian immigrants have a very different history and are perceived differently by the general privileged white masses than black people are. We've been given different cultural contexts.

I don't think it's fair to say that we have some kind of "drive" or "spark" that other minority groups don't. It's that we operate in a white American system of racism that superficially tends to favor us over darker-skinned people but still manages to subjugate all non-whites in obvious and subtle ways both.

[–]Jinnigan 52 points53 points ago

I mean, while the basic facts of Asian folk being "more" successful than Black folk may be true, you're falling into a trap of comparing dissimilar situations. First of all, (assuming you're looking at 1st-gen or children of 1st-gen immigrants), you're comparing cream of the crop self-selected people to, well, the average. It's not cheap or easy to get to America, so Asians who make it to the US are already definitely hard workers, dedicated to success, blahblah all that sort of thing. Even if the kids are born here, their parents already hold those values, and try their damndest to pass it on to their kids. Go to China, look at the chinese kids in average schools, they're as normal as anything here - some lazy, some dedicated, etc. There are a billion+ people in china - why are only some of them doing well, some of them in America?

Another thing is the cultural background, right? Chinese families "do well" on standardized tests because, basically, Chinese civilization has had standardized tests for literally thousands of years (sup confucionist meritocracy). This is a culture which has prized education and testing for thousands of years. It is also a culture which has remained intact and was never burned to the ground and torn apart at the seams by, i don't know, some kind of outside influence.

Compare this to black and hispanic civilization and cultural history, which have been destroyed and raped for the benefit of white colonialists. (China was colonized too, but never devastated as much as south american and african societies) I mean, let's not forget that up until, oh, a hundred or so years ago, blacks would be literally killed, lynched, etc for even trying to read. Even up until 30 or so years ago, the schools that blacks were allowed to attend were deliberately kept completely and utterly useless.

Simply think about your own situation - who was it that taught you how to read, how to value education, and the importance of critical thought? I don't know you very personally, but I'm willing to bet it was a combination of good parents, good teachers, and access to resources not available to everyone (a decent library, for one).

Obviously, this is not to say that it is impossible now or ever for black students to excel. But I am saying that, once you take into consideration the larger history and cultural differences, you can't really compare the black situation to the asian situation.

Anyways, check this article for a much longer elaboration of what I clumsily summed up here: http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-aamodel.htm

Finally, I would also like to point out is that this train of thought is actually very insidious. Using the Asian as a model minority - to use a contrast to those "less good" minorities, like blacks, hispanics, and poor whites - is pretty much the entire point of holding up Asians as a stereotype of good students.

When you believe that asians have made it because of simple hard work and dedication, without a complete understanding of the historical and cultural background, then you must believe that blacks should be able to make it through hard work and dedication as well. Asians did it, didn't they? The ugly underbelly of this, of course, is that blacks and poor whites who don't make it must be lazy, and therefore deserve their poverty. This ignores the massive societal problems that non-Asian minorities face, problems which cannot be easily overcome through sheer hard work and dedication.

So, did you say a racist thing? Yes - but through no fault on your own part, of course. The wonderful thing about modern-day racism is that it does not require any willful racism on people's parts - the system is just set up that way already.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

[–]tentonwire 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Korea's education system is kinda backwards. Essentially, you bust your ass in high school to take super hard entrance exams into top notch colleges, but once you're there, college is a joke.

That said, high school education in Korea is probably around sophmore-college level math/science in America.

Asians are viewed as the model minority. It's just a stereotype. Statistically, African immigrants are the most educated ethnic group in the U.S.

[–]Gomestradamus 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's true, almost everyone I know who has immigrated from Africa has been a hard worker, in or graduated from college, and they seem to be exceptionally kind. Probably not what most Americans would expect.

[–]kalanea 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Almost everyone that immigrates to another place with the purpose of getting a better life for themselves and their families are hard workers, they go to college (and if they don't go to college, their kids will); and they're exceptionally kind.

Of course, there's always people who immigrate for their "own" purposes.

African immigrants

That's the important distinction. Black immigrants are likely to be growing up with different upbringing than those that are "native" to the U.S. so they might be brought up with parenting that pushes them towards valuing education and such.

I was wrong. okay.jpg

[–]aiowen 10 points11 points ago

So, second or third generation Asian-Americans are just as likely to do well as first generation immigrants? What about fifth or sixth generation Asian-Americans? I don't see the connection you're trying to make here.

[–]mrpoopistan 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The word you're looking for is "racism". That's the connection he's trying to make. I'm sure he'll fine tune his racist argument and claim he's just talking about "ethnic" behaviors in the black community in America. But, ya know, it sure talks like a duck.

[–]akitoes 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why are you correcting yourself ? Nothing of what you said seems wrong :

African immigrants to the U.S. are among the most educated groups in the United States. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is more than double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans
