This is inaccurate.

As a college senior in electives, I don't attend class enough to be caught arguing with freshmen.

[–]aesir33 189 points190 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This attitude always boggled my mind. After paying that much for classes, I'm damn sure I'll attend them all.

[–]IggySorcha 156 points157 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The attitude tends to be had by people who have the luxury of not having to pay for classes.

Or people who are forced to sign up for stupid elective courses after they've finished all of their major-relevant material and need three more credits of "Theater Science" to graduate.

[–]iamadogwhatisthis 54 points55 points ago

I can't help but assume "Theater Science" is magic tricks - which would be pretty awesome.

[–]inuyome1008 110 points111 points ago

Magic tricks are what whores do for money. I would choose an Illusion class.

[–]BrianBoyko 54 points55 points ago

...actually, given that description, I'd probably choose the tricks class.

I had this problem. Tested out of a math class into Calc, ended up taking calc2 and some other crazy math classes. Later switched my major to Psychology which required some intro math class, which was a different path than the ones I tested out of, so it "didn't count."

It was a class full of freshmen who were all really bad at math, the most complicated thing we covered was the quadratic equation. I literally just went to take the tests. (That was stupid, I made As on all the tests, ended up with a C in the class because of "participation")

[–]plucesiar 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

LOL your math class had participation? Sounds like business math

[–]oddmanout 9 points10 points ago

[–]plucesiar 0 points1 point ago

That reminds me of a class I took for summer back in high school. The science teacher didn't know how to do logarithms (she was teaching about half-life... OH THE IRONY) and had to copy the notes my friend wrote on the chalkboard about basic log rules

[–]oddmanout 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this woman was the only professor I ever HATED. She would do sample problems on the board, and get them WRONG. I wasn't in that class often, but when I was, it was a regular thing for her to mess up and start over. I'm pretty sure it was happening even when I wasn't there.

She was actually a high school teacher, but for some reason or another got to teach a low-level college class. This went to her head so bad, someone said something like "instructor" or "teacher" or something one day before class, and she over heard, she belted out over everyone's talking "IT'S PROFESSOR! THIS IS A UNIVERSITY!"

[–]dorklogic 1 point2 points ago

some intro math class

[–]bcarlzson 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a finance professor change her grading system after me and three friends stopped going to class and only showing up to take tests and turn in projects. She posted all notes online and in class just read the slides. We were all Math Majors so it was the equivalent of college algebra for us. We all got A's on all the tests and when are grades were posted we all had B-'s. She was pissed we had found a loophole and decided to make attendance 15% of the grade. When we filed a formal protest the dean of the business school told us it wasn't worth it and there was a good chance we'd face backlash in future classes by other professors. I still wish I hadn't listened to him, but it's not like your GPA is on your diploma.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Getting backlash for spending your time on more productive activities, possibly further, higher and more appropriate learning? Some teachers you had.

[–]glutuk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

definitely would have contested that grade.

[–]oddmanout 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

there was nothing to contest. I really didn't go to class. It was also my last semester. I had graduated, had a degree, and was done with college. It wasn't worth it.

What school grades you in participation?

[–]oddmanout 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

schools? probably a lot, that's not unheard of for lots of upper level classes. Some of my junior and senior level classes actually required that we answer questions about required reading and stuff.

Math... not so much.

[–]Monotone_Robot 1 point2 points ago

Or people disdainful of the 16 credit hours of general education fluff that was (literally, confirmed by a member of the board and not a rumor) instituted by their school to give kids stupid easy classes and thereby reduce the 1st year dropout rate.

[–]kyuubi42 5 points6 points ago

If your gen ed classes are so easy a potted plant could pass them you're doing school wrong and wasting money.

[–]POOPFEAST420 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or it could be that you realize it's all bullshit anyway, and that school is just a degree factory. So you take the easiest gen eds possible to boost your gpa.

If you want to learn something challenging, just do it. You have access to your local library and the greatest repository of human knowledge ever created, the internet.

[–]kyuubi42 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but there is no replacement for actual discourse which you aren't getting on the internet or library, but do get from a class.

[–]MrMediocre 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe your school is a degree factory, but good schools exist. Find one and transfer if possible. You'll get much more for your time and money.

[–]IggySorcha 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have you even tried talking to your advisor about bumping up a level? My school had these too, and there are ways around it. You just have to hound your professor and the administrators to hell, because they'll act like it's not possible for as long as they can get away with it. Offer to test out, do research, or offer samples of your work to prove you're qualified.

[–]Mayniak 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sometimes, the lectures just aren't worthwhile. Some professors simply aren't effective teachers. The time spent being confused in lecture can be better spent doing other things, such as studying the material on your own.

[–]kirchiri 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agree with this fully. Not every teacher or class is worth attending. I worked full time and paid for my classes. If there was class I didn't need to sit through I wasn't going to be there. I'd be home sleeping/drinking/whatever. Most of the time reading the material in a book was enough for me to ace a class.

What really sucks is the teachers who think its high school and will deduct points from your grade for every class you miss. Yea cause you know what's best for my learning style. If I have an A in your class and 100% on every assignment, most likely don't need to attend.

[–]WanderingStoner 12 points13 points ago

paying that much for classes

You aren't paying for the classes (at least not stupid GE electives) you are paying for the degree.

That said, I never missed my music electives and I was a CS major.

[–]oddmanout 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The electives were usually the classes you want to go to. I enjoyed my electives much more than my major classes.

[–]WanderingStoner 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But the major electives were really where it was happening. The class I took on malware was my favorite in college. I mean, they taught me how to write viruses!

[–]Eupho 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've argued this with my friends, their response was pretty good. You're paying for the piece of paper that says your qualified to do x. If you can get the paper without going to class, all power to you.

[–]literroy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, you could get the piece of paper and also learn from people who are experts in fields from across the diverse realms of human knowledge at no extra charge. Just saying.

[–]UnwiseSudai 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, but I'm just not interested in music history or theory. While a lot of classes it is good to learn from, you will be forced to take a few that you do no care about and do not matter.

[–]literroy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, you won't care about everything you learn. Though I wager that's true within your major as well. But as long as you're being forced to go through the motions, might as well at least try to get something out of the process. You don't know what you might end up finding more interesting than you thought, and you don't know what might end up being useful knowledge somewhere down the road.

Doesn't boggle mine at all. A large percentage, if not the majority, of people in college (in America) don't belong there. College isn't about education anymore. It's about the party. College is just the 13th grade for most people. It's just the next step on the social ladder.

It is a contributing factor to why so many people have college degrees, no jobs, and crippling debt.

That was my Friday morning class every week. Hungover as fuck from $2 domestics at the piano bar the night before with my friends, smelling like the bar because when you're that hungover you don't care what other people think about you. I made it to class every Friday, and my teacher knew. He gave me extra points at the end of the semester both for having perfect attendance, and coming in with a hangover so frequently. Took him for 6 classes...loved that teacher. He wrote one of my letters of recommendation for grad school!!

One of my best friends gets drunk every single night, like blackout drunk more than a couple times a week. He smokes pot, he does other drugs, and he makes straight A's. He is ridiculously intelligent and makes what I would call bad decisions often, but he makes way better grades than I ever could. I'm dumbfounded by it to be honest. Since he started smoking pot a couple years ago (and he smokes every morning and every evening) he has really lost of some his short term memory. It's really the only side affect that I've noticed and it isn't even that bad, it's just he tells me a lot of the same stories on the same night now because he doesn't remember having told me previously that night. Other than that though, he can remember just about every aspect of his life and almost every piece of information he learns. The other night we were trying to figure out the name of a character in a book that I am currently reading that had a very small role in it. He read the book 2 years ago and remember her name before I could. It's stupid.

Yes, but it was discontinued in my province quite some time ago. A quick tip for determining the difference between a canadian and an american talking (typing) about their education :

US : 13th Grade

CAN : Grade 13

[–]DocBrown1984 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't do grade 13 anymore. The got rid of it in Ontario in 2002, which was the last province to even have it. I went to a Canadian uni for a couple of years back then, and they were all afraid of the fact that they were going to be overcrowded due to two classes graduating at the same time.

no.... you are not paying for the class, you are paying for the CREDIT and if you care the GRADE. don't fool yourself. I was an all A student prior to med school and I don't feel like my money was not used correctly, and I almost never went to class. College is about what floats you boat. Half the kids that "go to class" are on their FB anyways....

You are paying for a degree not an education. I went to school to get a job, once I had the job very little of my education was relevant. If I ha more free time in college I may have even done better in the courses that I cared about.

For those wondering: The guy is Kenny Omega. The wrestling promotion is DDT (Dramatic Dream Team). It's a comedy wrestling promotion. His gimmick is that he's obsessed with 90s-early 2000s video games. He's also very athletic.

He's facing a girl from a promotion called "Ice Ribbon." It's a wrestling school for little girls. Every once in a while, they'll have a big name on the Japanese indies (Omega in this case) face an Ice Ribbon girl. Usually the match is just for kicks, but Omega (who was heel, or "bad guy," at the time) decided to play it up a bit.

Yeah. I did a lot of work in Ancients and Classics at college. I had covered all the major courses but somehow I never took the basic intro course that outlined everything.

Somehow I mentioned this in a discussion with my professor last semester. He is teaching the basic level course this semester. He recommended I take it with him as a good way to review all that I had learned.

His reasoning made sense. He is a pretty cool guy. He's a grad student. So I said sure, why not?

What this class has taught me so far.... that I hate freshmen. I don't remember being such an asshole or a know-it-all when I was a freshman.

I know at least two fellow CS seniors who are currently enrolled in CIS200, because they're both transfer students whose credits didn't all go through. The instructor was so disappointed in the system that he's given them leave to never do anything, they've essentially passed the class already.

note: cis200 was the first class a CS major took when I started. Nowadays I believe its 115, but for a senior 200 is the lowest class you can get to.

I saved all my electives for my senior year and that was pretty boss. Everything was a breeze and I looked like a freaking genius when I participated in discussions. Impressed most all of my professors and ended up getting the connections to go on to get my masters and now I'm teaching at the same university.

Moral of the story: Be the guy who participates, it will take you places.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except apparently the moral of your story is to take classes that are inappropriately easy for your level, exploit that for your own benefit, throw off the curve for every other properly placed student in the class, and trick your profs into thinking you're some kind of genius.

I completely neglected participation and overall involvement in all things related to my college. Most likely because I was in business school and 99% of the people are douchebags. That said, I have a downtown job in a large city with an accounting firm as an articling student.

The real moral of the story: Read your books when necessary, interview well, and don't be a douche bag.

Completely true in college though. Most freshmen are on their own for the first time in their lives... and subsequently act completely retarded for at least the full first semester.

I don't know what the statistics are or anything, but anecdotal stories and reports of college kids getting their stomach pumped are not rare. Typically from freshman who are out on their own for the first time.

My guess would be that they were a bit sheltered and didn't drink much in high school like my degenerate self (although I'm not a big drinker by any measure), and get carried away.

[–]madanimal 3 points4 points ago

Yes I know a handful of people who have had their stomachs pumped, and have friends who have friends who have had theirs pumped as well. It sounds horrible.

[–]bitch_im_a_lion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, but If I know two languages and I read one, I can translate it to the other. I only know english so I obviously don't translate it to anything.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not necessarily! It's true that you can translate a language into another when you read it, but if you understand both languages fluently there's no need. :)

Bilingual people can switch back and forth, and can even think and dream in both languages!

This always amazes me because I, like you, only speak english.

[–]The_Thought_Police 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not necessarily true. When I was a kid, I used to translate English to my native language until I was a teenager. Now I just process the two (four in fact) separately. I still translate Spanish (which am still learning) to English though. Most multilingual speakers who are fluent don't need to translate back and forth, they just switch completely and naturally just the way you're comfortable with English.

[–]tengen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not as a native speaker and thinker, no.

[–]spvn 5 points6 points ago

Oh come on -.- You used google translate to translate "Now, you're speaking my language" into Chinese. But it sounds absolutely ridiculous when said in Chinese because it becomes "Now you speak my language" which sounds like some sort of stupid command.

Kind of like this.

[–]flatcoke 7 points8 points ago
