  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. These actually aren't that uncommon, this one is just bigger than normal. When canals have to cross a river, they go over.

There are a couple in Illinois that I've been by during bike rides. Canal trails are awesome.

Check out the I&M Canal and the Hennepin Canal. I've made it up to the Hennepin Canal a couple of times and the trail is a bit sandy but I made it 30+ miles on a road bike. The I&M Canal is supposed to be in better shape but I've never been on it, so I can't say for sure.

I've ridden the I&M Canal from start to finish, and I'd have to say that the towpath itself is in pretty great condition. Large patches are actually paved and I'm pretty sure that almost all of it it at least gravel. I know from memory that there are at least two water bridges. One right near the end in LaSalle, and another in Ottawa(not sure if it counts though as the canal is dry at this point.) I'm relatively certain there are more.

I grew up in Morris. The I&M Canal runs through there, right alongside the Illinois River. I remember it being very stagnant and always covered in thick slimy algae. A few houses had slides in their backyards that led into the canal. I could never figure out why anyone would want to slide in there.

My dad found a Big Wheel floating in the canal once and brought it home for us. He also found a huge snapping turtle in there and thought it was neat, so he brought it home in his trunk, and it scared the crap out of me when I was little. We eventually let it go.

In other words, it's the Magdeburg Water Bridge of Germany.

Details from site:

The Germans took over 80 years to build this 918m bridge over Elbe river near the town of Magdeburg. Canal engineers had first conceived of joining the two waterways as far back as 1919, and by 1938 the Rothensee boat lift and bridge anchors were in place, but construction was postponed during World War II. After the Cold War split Germany, the project was put on hold indefinitely by the East German government.

Germany needs that for exports. It is possible to export by ship from every port that is connected to this river system.

There are at least five different companies and resellers of cargo transport in each river port.

The ships usually go to Hamburg, Restock or Rotterdam, where they drop the cargo in and out of big ships.

We have one of those in Manchester, UK, but with canals. In fact, the aqueduct also turns (along with a road bridge near-by) to allow ships through on the larger canal.

Check this out,

it's a (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Str%C3%A9py-Thieu_boat_lift)[boat-lift]. That things sends boats up and down, working like a giant river lock.

I've seen it being built, this is massive and took years to complete. Very expensive as well.
