Everytime someone says "Everytime someone says Pluto isn't a planet, I think of this" I think of this:

NASA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH PLUTO BEING KICKED OUT OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM!

The IAU (International Astronomical Union) was in charge of removing Pluto as a planet

[–]seaburn 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also the decision had little to do with Pluto's size, rather it's position in a belt of objects on a different plane than the planets, many of which are larger than Pluto, so where are those "planets" fan clubs?

Sort of. IIRC, the decision ended up being centered around the fact that planets must clear their orbital path, which Pluto does not. If it was more massive, it would, and would be considered a planet.

Knowing that Pluto crosses the orbit of Neptune, honest question: what about Neptune and Pluto doesn't violate this "cleared of debris" rule?

[–]tahosa 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pluto does violate it, and hence isn't a planet. For Neptune, it has cleared the debris in it's orbit by turning it into moons or absorbing it. As for the crossing, you'd have to talk to the IAU. I don't think Pluto counts since it isn't actually in Neptune's orbital trajectory

Pluto isn't massive enough to be a serious problem for Neptune's planethood. I think it only has to be heavier than the sum of all other objects in its orbit to satisfy the criterion.

[–]this_is_satire 0 points1 point ago

Pluto isn't in Neptune's orbit anyways. Pluto is just sometimes closer to the sun than Neptune, they do not actually cross paths.

For the purposes of neighbourhood-clearing calculations, Wiki indicates that

Per Soter, two bodies are defined to share an orbital zone if their orbits cross a common radial distance from the primary, and their non-resonant periods differ by less than an order of magnitude.

However, Neptune doesn't seem to be included in the calculation for Pluto (.077 of its neighborhood, would be < 0.0001 if Neptune was in there) probably because of the resonance between them.

Also, I was wrong about it only having to be as massive as everything else; turns out the rule of thumb is 100 (but anywhere between 1 and 10,000 gives the same results so far).

DON'T LET THEM TAKE NEPTUNE AWAY TOO!!!!!!! weeping

To my knowledge it was also because they've found, and expect to find many more objects similar to pluto in size, and orbit. They created the "dwarf planet" category for them, and so pluto had to be removed from the list of major planets.

I'm pretty sure Pluto is still in the Solar system!

[–]Cooler-Beaner 0 points1 point ago

The problem isn't that Pluto is large enough. It's that Eris (aka: Xena) is larger! And if you let Eris be a planet, what about Ceres, Haumea, and Makemake.

So we would be up to 13 planets; and then there is Sedna, Orcus, 2007 OR10, and Quaoar who also want to talk about planetary status thingy...

‎"It is suspected that at least another fifty known objects in the Solar System are dwarf planets, and estimates are that up to 200 dwarf planets may be found when the entire region known as the Kuiper belt is explored, and that the number might be as high as 2,000 when objects scattered outside the Kuiper belt are considered" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_planet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutoid

TIL: We almost had a 10th planet called Xena, and we have a Plutoid called MakeMake!

Pluto and Charon's center of gravity is outside Pluto's mass.

And pluto's surface is being cast into space just like a comet.

Why did we ever think it was a planet in the first place?

[–]swdpwnzdggr 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because at the time it was discovered people were pretty much racing to find the 9th theorized planet.

Every time this comes up I think of this quote from Me, Myself, and Irene.

"Man how the hell can they call Pluto a planet? No motherfucking planet has an elliptical orbit. This shit don't make no sense."

Everytime someone says pluto isn't a planet I think

Well, it's a dwarf planet..

So by saying dwarf planets aren't planets.. are you insinuating that dwarf people aren't people?

[–]h0ser 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everytime someone says Pluto isn't a planet, I think "Yep, that sounds a about right."

Also, our moon is larger than pluto.

When I hear this I wonder what else in grade 5 science was a lie.

[–]andreif 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every time somebody complains about this decision, I want to rationally explain them that Pluto did not get down-graded because it is too small, but because in the last decade there have been more trans-Neptunian objects discovered which are of significant size compared to Pluto (Eris being bigger than Pluto) which would have needed to be classified as planets too if Pluto had remained in the category, for the sake of consistency. So instead of 20 new planets, you have 1 less planet and everything else is thrown into the new category of dwarf-planets. Now stop bitching.

[–]drakeypoo 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like the only people who "care" about Pluto no longer being classified as a planet are these fucking people.

[–]Korkymann 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was either remove one planet or add five. Removing one was easier.

I'm in a play right now with a Pluto reference...

My character: I'm named after a planet, I think. My mom said I was and she said it was prettier than naming me Pluto.

Other character: Pluto's not a planet.

My character: Since when?

And inside every time I say that I have a little 90's kid gloat session.

[–]giantrubberduckofdoo 2 points3 points ago

Every time someone says Pluto isn't a planet, I remind them that we are in Illinois and it is totally still a planet here. Our Senate Said So.

[–]JLoche 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not only is this a horrible repost, it's not even true about why pluto was decided to not be a planet. Failure on two different levels.

[–]StraightfromSTL 1 point2 points ago

the correct response would be "I was big enough for your mom"

Pluto is smaller than the moon, and can't even control it's woman, Charon. Seriously, the guys a wimp, not a planet.

[–]dnew 0 points1 point ago

Mars is a planet, and it doesn't even have any women, so what are you talking about?

Pluto is not necessarily too small. The reason is because it hasn't cleared its surrounding area of space shit like asteroids and similar sized objects.

[–]punnymoniker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

dude, there can only be 8 planets because the sun is the nucleus of our solar system, and everyone knows that it takes 8 electrons to make a perfect outside shell, and same goes with planets; pluto would be the ninth. Duh.

[–]TaslemGuy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pluto is not a planet not because of its size, but because its orbit is not clear of other objects.

[–]wipeout4wh 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is true, but there is no reason for your text to be obnoxiously huge.

I'm getting really tired of hearing every jerk off for the last however many years acting like it really actually mattered to them that pluto is no longer on the same list that the other 8 major planets are on. It's a dwarf planet now for a good reason.
