When I deactivated my account out of the 300 people I had on there, only like 10 people noticed.

Do you actually get moved forward by the violence of your farts?

Impressive.

It really depends how socially dependant on Facebook you were.

One of my friends temporarily disabled his account, his social life basically dwindled due to it, he often contacted people over the chat and received event invites over Facebook.

I think it's difficult to remove yourself from a service that all your friends are so religiously dedicated to.

I would be happy without Facebook if my friends didn't use it. (Which I guess is the point of it.)

All I wanted is a way to delete my entire facebook data. Timeline, photos, history, messages, everything.

I could use a method to contact the people on facebook, but I'm just uncomfortable having my data stored on facebook.

I tried deactivating/reactivating my account. Doesn't work anymore. The many clean facebook wall javascript doesn't work anymore. My only hope is that european data law thingy would get passed and implemented for the rest of the world to enjoy.

Have you considered not putting personal information on Facebook in the first place?

In what way could this have a negative impact on your life?

WOULD I STILL HAVE

Oh, sorry bout that. Was just yelling at Mr. Blaine on my previous comment.

cough

Anyway, would this permanently delete everything? I was hoping to still have all the friends list I have after the purge.

[–]ShakyBonez 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, this will make it as though you never had a facebook account to begin with. All of your comments/likes will disappear, as well as your friends list.

Okay. :(

True. But I still did it. And I don't miss it. My REAL friends go out of their way to invite me to things and talk to me.

You know, like how it was BEFORE Facebook?

[–]sturmeh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My real friends have become complacent with Facebook, not much I can do about it.

You know what makes this true? The people who wanted privacy never would have signed up for facebook in the first place.

[–]WikiP 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How about people who learned about their privacy after they signed up for facebook?

[–]GeorgePukas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any time you upload your personal photos or post personal information that is linked to your "profile" on any given website you are giving up your privacy to that information. You can't just claim ignorance on that.

[–]WikiP 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's one thing to have information linked to an individual on a website, it's an entirely different thing when that website begins to actively sell private information (among other things) to third party companies.

It's not a claim to ignorance but more of 'I'm leaving because this I no longer agree for this company'

Edit spelling errors due to autocorrect :p

[–]GeorgePukas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. Companies change their rules all the time. All those EULA and privacy agreements always have loopholes or state somewhere that in the end, the user is at the mercy of the company. You never know when a government, or even another company is going to come in and buy the place up or shut it down and do god knows what with your info.

That kind of knowledge is usually a result of experience, which is what many people don't have when they are happily putting everything on Facebook. Usually they see everyone doing this and think it's just what people do.

Once they realize that Facebook isn't just the friendly free service they always thought it was, then that's when people like you can laugh and point fingers.

[–]telllos 0 points1 point ago

So which movie is it from, now I'm curious.

The movie was funny, but not really my kind of film. I loved the fight scene during the student riot!

That's the same reaction I get when I tell people I've never had, nor want, a Facebook account.

[–]hurlga 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who has also never had a Facebook account, I can't agree.

People around me seem to find "No" a perfectly valid answer to "Are you on facebook?".

Hooray for living in a country where privacy is actually valued.

[–]SYSB 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's funny to me because it is never actually "deleted".

[–]iamapizza 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a permanent delete form you can fill out, after which you must stay away from Facebook for about 2 weeks. Then it gets permanently deleted. The reason for staying away is if you so much as visit a site with a Facebook widget on it, they think you're still interested in Facebook and your account is reactivated, the delete process gets cancelled. (So just add FB to your hosts file)

[–]SYSB 1 point2 points ago

The only reason I have Facebook at this point is just to make snarky comments at people.

[–]evildwarf 2 points3 points ago

It does seem to be the modern equivalent to saying you don't have a TV. It's not actually going to change your life that much because you don't have it, but it's so pervasive that the freak is the one without it for not following the flock.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think the reaction is to imply that, by not owning one/being on facebook, you are a freak. I believe the reaction is generated entirely from a place of "I absolutely can't imagine living without TV/Facebook, so I have a terrible time trying to picture what it must be like for you."

[–]article134[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say in 2012 its worse to not have a fb account than not having a tv. You don't have a tv you're either a lame hipster trying too hard to renounce conformity.....or you're too poor. Either way no one cares. You don't have fb? whhoooaaa dude wtf are YOU hiding!?

[–]Sisricthegreat 3 points4 points ago

Or you just watch Netflix all day on the computer.

[–]belowthelaw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By tv do we mean cable or an actual television?

[–]VelocityRD 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

An actual TV, usually.

[–]muffinheart 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What if you only use your TV as a computer display? Does that count?

[–]VelocityRD 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd be inclined to still say it counts, since there's an actual television in the house. But since people can essentially watch TV from their computer screens anyway, you can make the argument for it to work the opposite direction (i.e., the TV ceases to be a TV and is essentially a computer monitor).

[–]nickfromredcliff 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why people 'delete' facebook. What does it cost you to just stop using it? Is it like the cool hipster thing to do so you can be viewed as straying from the mainstream?

[–]relevant_lobster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably more a psychological thing so that they aren't tempted to keep using it.
