Playing fps games must be difficult?

[–]NolanRoss 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any games would be difficult.

[–]PhilxBefore 2 points3 points ago

Not Flight sims and racing games.

:O it's so beautiful. I require specs.

Also, what is that game? RUSE perhaps?

[–]teheranaway[S] 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

RUSE on a professional 6 screens setup from Dassault Systems (screens are Samsung). It allows the 6 screens to be fed by a single graphic card.

What's your graphics card?

Most of the high end 6000 series can do it for $200-$300.

Can you go into a bit more detail about how you set up the 6 screen system?

[–]teheranaway[S] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't install it myself (a coworker did, the guy in the pic), but from what I can remember, there is just a single DVI cable between the graphic card and a little black box behind the monitors.

This little box is doing all the magic, ie. feeding the signal to the 6 monitors, and syncing their light/contrast/color temp setting (you set that from a single remote control). For Windows and the graphic card, this is just one gigantic screen.

The whole system cost around 3000€ if i remember correctly, which is costlier than buying 6 identical, slim bezel 24" screens and putting them on some custom stand.

[–]MisterNetHead 2 points3 points ago

One card, one cable, and six screens? The key question you're leaving out: what's the resolution?

[–]teheranaway[S] 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't remember exactly (don't have the setup anymore), it was 6x24" Samsung screens, so resolution was something like (3x1920)x(2x1080)

[–]leptons 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, but the single DVI cable claim requires some proof.

And if it exists, I want one.

http://www.vizworld.com/2010/09/amd-drives-hd-monitors-single-ati-firepro-v9800-graphics-card/

The picture was taken last summer (we only got to play with this setup for 2-3 weeks). I really can't say what graphic card was in the computer, but I'm 100% sure that there was only one DVI cable connecting the setup to the computer.

[–]Dislexsick 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chances are it was DisplayPort. Single link DVI cannot handle those resolutions. I imagine that is 3x1920 by 2x1080 (6x1080p monitors) which would be 5760 by 2160 pixels - far too much for single link DVI and potentially too much for DisplayPort.

[–]PhilxBefore 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What is the throughput cap on a DVI cable?

[–]Dislexsick 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From wikipedia:

1,915 × 1,436 pixels (standard 4:3 ratio), 1,854 × 1,483 pixels (5:4 ratio), or 2,098 × 1,311 (widescreen 16:10 ratio).

All above are @ 60Hz.

It can support 2.75 megapixels in single link. 6x1080p displays is 12.44 megapixels.

[–]richalex2010 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As long as you have odd numbers, it works out. An even number puts the center in a bezel, odd puts it in the center (physically) of a screen. You can't have two screens like this, but you can have 3; you can't have 6, but you can have 9.

[–]PhilxBefore 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

15 would be ideal, as 9 wouldn't really be widescreen.

[–]argumentinvalid 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Monitors are so cheap now that it makes sense to have a second monitor if you spend a lot of time on your computer. A full eyefinity setup is most definitely overkill for most users, but a simple second screen is very useful for having multiple documents open at once, keeping a music player open on one, watching media on one while working on the other, etc etc.

[–]zurratype 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously, going for more monitors is awesome. I currently am using two and it is fucking awesome. When I play games I just play on one screen because of the bezel. Basically, I have my "main" monitor centered and another one to the right of it and it works out very nice. I've got another monitor to the left of it, but it isn't being used right now. I'm still deciding if I want to add my atom hackintosh which resides under my bed as a server or my older amd x2 3800+ system. I'm leaning towards the amd system so I can have a fulltime windows box for things that require windows.

[–]glassFractals 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. All that bezel would drive me completely nuts. How can you be immersed with all those lines cutting through the visuals?

[–]Fantasysage 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the center is a screen, not a bezel it is livable. So you really need an odd amount of screen per dimension. So 3x1 is fine but 3x2 blows. I still rather a large 30" 1600p to a three monitor for gaming. Maybe one of these days I'll get rich and get two more U3011's for insane surround gameplay.

[–]Dislexsick -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I prefer 3x 1600p personally, but I'm still working on making that happen :(

With 30" IPS panels being like $1200 and too laggy still I'm just gonna keep waiting and saving for a while.

[–]Fantasysage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't say I notice any lag on my U3011

[–]Dislexsick -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I just double checked and 7ms should be reasonable, but there is also a delay actually painting it to the screen. TBH I'm gaming off 1/2 HP ZR24w's and they are about the same and I don't really notice/am able to compensate for any lag - I'm not playing any "hardcore" FPSes where I'd truly notice so no problem there.

There are several distinct types of "lag" (Technically not all "lag" but different things that can degrade the player experience) that can be present. The names given here are not official, but just names I assigned, and from my experience are typically used to refer to the lag; they should not be treated as canon.

Input lag: Lag caused by the input device failing to deliver the data about player actions to the application. i.e. keyboard which for one reason or another takes too long to react.

Application Processing lag: When the machine does not have enough CPU power to calculate what is going on. Causes stuttering when physics and AI are needed.

Video processing lag: When the GPU is not powerful enough to handle the game/current settings. Causes low FPS and stuttering when attempting to render the content.

Net lag: Ping, jitter, throughput issues causing jerky movement for other players. Only applies to multiplayer, what most people refer to as lag.

Display processing lag: Time used by the display from when it receives pixel data to the time it takes to "send" the data to the pixel. Once it is "sent" to the pixel the "Display response time" effectively starts as the pixel changes to that color. This is causes by the above mentioned "scaler" for handling non-native resolutions - this part of the hardware also handles the OSD. Typically not much lag is introduced here, however due to the feature-set of IPS panels (typically very high resolutions, extra color gamuts, and the like) this can be a little more than a comparable TFT panel.

Display response time: The time provided in the technical specifications for a display for that display to change from a black pixel to a white pixel. Depending on calculations it may also be certain shades of grey to other shades of grey - either way it is the time quoted for a pixel to change color. High values cause ghosting. 8ms and above is considered to cause noticeable ghosting, depending on how sensitive/tuned an individual is they may notice slight amounts above 5/6ms. Can be negated in fast paced games with things such as motion blur, as it causes a very similar effect. IPS panels typically cannot get as low as a TFT panel.

Since there are so many areas troubleshooting some "lag" can be difficult - net lag and video processing lag are easy to identify, however both the input lag and display lag can be hard - input lag may be getting confused with application processing lag (The hardware in the peripheral may be delivering the signal in a timely manner but the application may not register it for several ms) similarly you may think there is input lag, but it is processing lag on the display - after the data is sent from the video card and before the display attempts to set the color of the pixel - high end displays may need to do a LOT of work here - especially the high end IPS panels designed for graphics work (To name a few tasks: Pick the color space/gamut, normalize the color internally, scale the image if it not running at native resolution) this is all happening on dedicated hardware for each task but each task you add naturally adds a little more time.

[–]zurratype -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I could choose any setup for gaming I would probably go with 3 30" IPS monitors, but have them setup vertical. From having seen those setups they look reallly nice. I love the idea of massive amounts of screen space, but also not having to turn your head so much. Although, once I had that setup I might want to go with them normal. Still 3 30" IPS screens is what I want :)

[–]Sir_Derp_Herpington 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm... Only solution seems to be that you'll have to buy 3 more monitors and set them up 3x3... yess....

We have a Samsung MD230X6 at work - same sort of thing. I put the thing together, it was a total mission. It's driven by a Radeon 6950 with 2GB RAM - there's 2 DisplayPort outputs and 4 DVI. Sadly it sits connected to a Linux box for monitoring all day; I haven't managed boot it into Windows after hours to game on it yet :(

I'd love to see a breakdown of that setup, piece-by-piece. Interested in doing something like this myself, and I'd like to get a rough estimate of the price.

Specific monitors, monitor arm, computer build (specifically the GPU that can allow you to do something like this), software, etc.

[–]KevinIsPwn 7 points8 points ago

You don't want that bar in the middle. Trust me.

[–]Overlay 4 points5 points ago

At E3, I got to play around in some racing game with a similar setup, using a Samsung Syncmaster with 6 monitors. It wasn't too bad. I found the feeling of immersion so overwhelming that the bar in the center became a minimal distraction.

[–]KevinIsPwn 1 point2 points ago

Did you do any FPS games? I can imagine sniping would take some getting used to.

[–]Overlay 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately I did not, but I feel the reticle would be slightly below the bezel. However, I'm not a huge PC shooter fan. Mainly stick to RPG & TBS, leaving shooters for my console.

[–]rjc34 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For gaming, you'll want to go with 3 horizontal, 3 vertical, or 5 vertical. Depends on what games.

[–]steve-d 0 points1 point ago

Racing games really wouldn't be a problem but, you're right, FPS would be a nightmare.

[–]teheranaway[S] 2 points3 points ago

Nothing custom-made, it's a whole setup sold by Dassault Systemes. The monitor arms are really heavy, I don't think you could do that by yourself without some serious machinery. The screens are Samsung-branded. There is a little electronic box behind one of the monitor where you plug one DVI cable.

[–]AcceptableLosses 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, you could fabricate the arm with $50 in square tube steel, hardware from Home Despot, a welder, a drill, and some elbow grease. No serious machinery required!

I get round that rule by using a jar with a rubberized covered lid. Keeps my drink handy, and quite spill proof. It's beat any kind of specialized coffee cup, mug or glass I've tried. [–]whoshouldibe 12 points13 points ago

Forgive my ignorance, why is a mouse-pad necessary? If he has an optical mouse, would it make any difference?

[–]KPDover 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a valid choice not to use one for convenience, but the reasons I use one are:

  • Don't want to scratch up my desk

  • Don't want to scratch the underside of my expensive mouse

  • Pad provides a custom surface for however you like to game (soft, hard, very slick or more controlled)

  • Gaming mousepads are designed specifically to make it easy for the mouse sensor to track properly, desks vary in the appropriateness of their surface.

[–]TED_666 4 points5 points ago

Absolutely concur. I have a razer double sided thing that does track differently based on the side chosen. And I like my desk, really don't need to scratch it up.

I never really see the point of this kind of setup, wherein you just get a larger viewing area, you just end up concentrating on the screen in front of you. Games that let you put different things on either screen makes much better use of them imo (like Supreme Commander - shows you different parts of the battlefield/different map styles).

Well these are all currently open. I have multiple books I have to cross reference while working on school work and programs. My desktop if that's what you're referring too has no icons on it. The one thing I hate about using Windows is I never really can get it quite how I like it. When i'm on Linux, the multiple desktops, and the customized work environment I made for myself is much better. Unfortunately there are a few native Windows applications I must use.

Lol, OK. I interpreted that wrong then. The mental image of that reminded me of all my teacher's desktops ಠ_ಠ

Why the hell would you want a screen break right in the center of vision? Where the is your cross hairs? You have no precision with a screen set up like that. Looks cool but incredibly pointless...

6 hd monitors. yet you still have a dinosaur mouse and keyboard. Think of your priorities

[–]phthano 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't seem to be true. The keyboard says IBM, so it might be an old style IBM Mechanical keyboard, which are among the best in quality. We can't really see the mouse.

6 monitors = 5760x2160 resolution.

Big TV = 1920x1080 resolution.

6 monitors = 6x the pixels. When you're sitting that close, the resolution of a TV would make everything look absolutely horrible.

[–]glennerooo 0 points1 point ago

also i've noticed (and read) that HDTVs often scale non-HD resolutions (other than PAL) pretty horribly.

[–]AbeX 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, monitors also scale some non-hd sources pretty horribly e.g. analog feeds from regular cable tv.

[–]Leffy_ 4 points5 points ago

You can get a much higher resolution with multiple monitors, plus curved screen.

I think it's funny that all of the downvoters presume that in your questions you are mocking the OP for his choice of monitors v. a larger screen.

The truth is you are just asking a perfectly reasonable question (for someone who isn't knowledgeable about the differences between TVs and monitors).

The hivemind is cruel sometimes.

Just to be clear : I did not buy any of this. This setup was installed at my office for reviewing purpose, then we sent it back to the manufacturer after a few weeks.
