I believe these were pictures taken of a tiger sanctuary in Thailand.

Last I remember, there was a bit of controversy surrounding it. Ah yes, good ol' Wikipedia. Accusations like inbreeding of an endangered species and abuse are common

thats looks like a comic. In the first image, the tiger at bottom is making a lame joke, and in the 2nd panel the tiger on top was reacting to it

How close did you get to a tiger? like pet one?

[–]Mookie_Wilson 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In Kanchanaburi, there's a tiger temple where you can play with and feed the tigers in the morning, and have them rest their heads in your lap during their afternoon naps. There's also the cage where you can play with baby tigers. The animals were incredibly sedate, and seemingly well-taken care of. It's how sedate the animals were that seemed questionable to me, despite the temple's claims that no drugs are used them.

[–]backyardlion 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The temple claims the tigers are reincarnated monks, perhaps that may explain their clam demeanor. Or the tigers take drugs...

What the monks are doing to these tigers is either really beautiful or truly horrendous, I can't tell which one yet.

[–]probably_trollin 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends. Tigers, like house cats can go either way. If you're calm, gentle and relaxed around them, odds are, they won't try to eat you unless you look weak. There's been reports of trainers with Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs, etc (the large cats) who have been fine with the animals, but had a moment where they appeared weak and the animal goes apeshit. Monks.... aren't afraid of shit like Tigers, they accept what happens to them, so they are serene and comfortable around the tigers, so the tigers are serene and comfortable around them.

Now, being serene and comfortable around your average person, I doubt that, unless before going in to see the tigers there is like a super strict test with a leashed tiger or something, as I just can't see any sane person taking someone unaccustomed to that scenario and putting them in a area with a live Tiger, I know I'd probably shit my pants, and I've been feet away from them, and I still don't feel comfortable with 6 inches of bullet resistant glass between me and them, let alone having one take a nap on me.

[–]lol_oopsie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was certainly my impression from visiting there (Tiger Temple, Kanchanaburi)

Staff all seemed knowledgeable and professional, and the tigers didn't seem sedated at all. They were fully awake, not slumped. But they were calm and relaxed. A trainer was close by all the time, and they actually did restrict certain tigers who were in a "bad mood."

I think you're right that you need to know how to act. The trainers all know how to move safely. For instance, we were told NEVER to turn your back to one, and NEVER to crouch down. That makes you smaller and weaker, and more like a target.

And the staff are always quite dominant and do "big", loud actions. Never weak and timid or shying away from the tigers.

[–]patheticgrl43 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't they spend like a ridiculous amount of time every day sleeping? I imagine for at least like two thirds of the day they're probably pretty docile and calm. It's obviously possible they're on drugs but even most big cats are pretty relaxed most of the time.

[–]bigfig 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Keep them well fed, and I'll bet there is only a 1% chance of getting mauled.

[–]lol_oopsie 6 points7 points ago

Yup, you could pet them. They were awake, not drugged or anything, but very peaceful. Apparently there are times of day when they are more sleepy and docile.

You can have Tigons as well. Whether you get a liger or tigon depends if you mate a female lion with male tiger or vice versa.

[–]evioive 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never understood the obsession with the White Tiger or even White Lions for that matter, but then again, I suppose it's akin to people wanting to breed and preserve "purebred" dogs despite health concerns for the animals.

I just wish these tiger breeders didn't give bullshit excuses about species protection and the like and just instead acknowledge that the whole thing is a vanity project.

[–]YouKiddin 22 points23 points ago

I went to this Tiger Temple in Kanchaburi as well, and here's my experience along with lots of photos of the tigers there: http://mithunonthe.net/2009/12/31/thailand-2009-day-2-kanchanaburi-bridge-over-the-river-kwai-and-tiger-temple-wat-pa-luangta-bua/

You get to be really close to the tigers, and the monks claim they are doing this in the name of conservation. Yet, there's an entry fee that isn't that cheap and the international 'volunteers' there simply look like young stoners who just took up work at the Tiger Temple to stay in Thailand longer.

[–]myaccountdracula 7 points8 points ago

[–]hereshowitis 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because in order for such 'cute' scenes as this to occur - of people interacting peacefully with top level predators - something has to have happened to the animal so that every natural predatory instinct it had has been crushed.

I saw the whole documentary over it. It was NOT a very nice place. And don't come and say that just because they are endangered, they handle them just however. I can take it that the monks are ignorant about the issue.

Some Thai zoos are just horrendous.

[–]prettyricky187 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was there just last year. I think the monks are just dudes dressed up as monks. I believe the "monk" in this pic is the same one I saw smoking a cigarette, and earlier was popping an ornery cub in the head with a stick (not beating). My understanding of Buddhism is that monks do not do harm to any creatures.

[–]pour_some_sugar 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If he was just "bopping" it and not beating it, maybe he was just training it? If they were actually harming these animals I don't think they would actually live that long.

I am sure that if the guy in the picture had actually hurt the tiger at any point in its life, it would remember and at some point have him for lunch instead.

[–]bigcitycrows 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have a gander at the long list of abuse and mistreatment at the Tiger temple, including malnourishment, physical abuse (beatings, pulling entire tigers by their tails to move them ten feet over), and dilapidated/low-quality housing. When not in the valley for tourist pictures, they're kept cages of concrete and metal bars.

Pretty much every zoo standards organization in the world has come out against these guys, including the AZA in America that makes sure American zoos have things like grassy enclosures with room to run.

[–]pour_some_sugar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]linearcore 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My understanding of Buddhism is that monks do not do harm to any creatures.

Buddhism is a massive collection of a diverse set of sects. Much like "Christianity" can refer to any of (reportedly) 30,000 different versions, Buddhism can mean any of a number of sects. And there isn't even some single belief that ties them all together like the resurrection event in Christianity.

[–]HuxleyBomb 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see the problem. The monk seems nice enough to share his meal with the tiger. He's even feeding it with chopsticks.

[–]hereshowitis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As humans and tigers are different species, whose common ancestor existed a very long time ago it would be impossible for a human and tiger to reproduce offspring. The accusations of inbreeding refer to a tiger with another tiger.

I have actually spent some time at the Tiger temple , in kanachanaburi , thailand , I was lucky enough to talk to the Vet who was american and he explained that the tigers are only exposed to humans at around mid-day after they have being fed , this is when they are most sluggish and sleepy also the strong mid-day sun adds to their laziness. The animals are not drugged. they are also fed a cooked meat diet none of them have ever eaten raw meat. Unfortunately the entire thing is a scam and involves corruption with local police, army and ordinary people. The story is that they found the tigers but in fact they come from tiger farms in Laos and are bred at the temple. Im not sure how involved the monks are but its hard to figure how they dont know what exactly is going on. The place is sorta of a cruel tourist trap.

[–]bigcitycrows 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you want more information and a handy link to give people when they insist the tigers are "well-trained". there's this.

Although the claims of what they're fed differ; chicken leftovers and dog food, hardly good tiger fare. As an aside, "cooked meat" is also a huge red flag- they need it raw, bloody, full of whole-bone-with-marrow, and with vitamin supplements. Cooking it removes a lot of the good stuff they still need.

thanks for that explains a lot , its hard for someone not used to tigers or their diet figuring out a situation like that , my gut instinct was that there was something not right with the place , the lack of raw meat seems obvious now. That place is just wrong , i lived in kanachanburi for a while and always refused going there once i suspected something.

looks like a sak yant tattoo: http://www.sak-yant.com/

they're common to Northern Thailand and are written in an old Buddhist script... they are essentially good luck charms. I think they are technically supposed to be tattooed by monks using a really long metal or bamboo needle

Yeah, buddhism's perspective on reincarnation is pretty stupid, but they don't have a mono or poly theistic deity(ies) to worship...buddha was just a dude who attained enlightenment. Samsara and Nirvana are both very much not a heaven and hell, and there is no distinct "dogma" other than compassion.

It's my favorite religion, but it's really close to not being one.

From my understanding, people in those areas still believe in gods, but the belief in them really has almost nothing to do with Buddhism. I'm a Buddhist and don't believe in gods or anything, but the religion isn't really focused on deities so it varies from person to person. And even if you do believe in gods, and believe that they can help you be better off in the next life, the whole point of Buddhism is to end the cycle of reincarnation so there's not much gods could do for you in that department anyway.

[–]heynowbbb 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah....but their worshiping doesn't really have anything to do with the true nature of buddhism. Besides the buddhism in thailand is very closely tied with their culture, so their understanding of it becomes as basic as possible. But don't blame the Buddhism for that. If you ask the average thai person about basic buddhist doctrines like the 8 noble truths, they couldn't tell you much (in my experience). So please don't let that stop you from further exploring this philosophy.

Per Joe Rogan. "Tigers are monsters. We just don't think so because we're used to them. If a space ship came down and a bunch of tigers got off of it, you'd want to kill them all."

It's very interesting. I've worked at the largest tiger sanctuary in America, not sure about the world. When they're captive raised, they love people and think we're fabulous. It's when they want to play with us and don't realize how incredible fragile we are that the issues happen, not because they want to eat us. Perhaps the calm centerness of the monks creates an environment of stable energy, and the cats don't get too excited?

I wouldn't respect that monk too much...

tl;dr monk works at tourist trap that treats its tigers terribly and doesn't give a shit about them as a species, but panders to the natural wonder of Westerners like us with the 'mystic' theme.

I've sadded many sads over these pictures, knowing what's behind them.

This place is pretty nuts. I met a western guy in Laos who worked there as a sort of big cat expert. He took me there and showed me a pair of asiatic lions. Which according to him are fuckin rare. It was weird. He made it kind of a big deal but they were just kind of off to the side. Any random tourist could easily find them. The place is also kinda sad. I bug tourist trap. And i think they drug the cats.
