"Finally, some warm weather!"
-All Norwegians living farther north than Trondheim
[–]ThrogArot 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Dude, hate to say this but...I love my cold weather. I'm currently living in the best and only place for getting education for space stuff, and I'm loving it.
Though shame it's so close to Jehova's Witness capital 101 here in Norway.
[–]NozQ 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago*
Knock on their door and ask this question: "Excuse me, but have you heard about how the flying spaghettimonster boiled for your sins?"
[–]TheJack38 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I currently live in Bergen, and previously lived in Sogn, and I'd still be saying that.
[–]roc1 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Upvote for living in Bergen. My family is from Bergen! Cheers to you, good sir (or madam).
[–]TheJack38 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I'm male, so sir it is :P
I'm not originally from Bergen, but I'm currently studying here, so yay Bergen! xD
[–]pinkemma 24 points25 points26 points 7 months ago
Actually, many denounce religion (even if they're part of the state church) but still call themselves spiritual. This is part agnosticism, and part believing in spirits, ghosts, nature powers, etc.
If this stat is taken from somewhere, I can only guess atheism = non-established religion.
But anyway, we do speak Norwegian in Hell. It's only 30 min north of me, Hell, Google maps
[–]bronsonbaker 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Can I come.... please?
[–]pinkemma 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I know this is showing off a stupid feeling of superiority. Got higher education, a good worker, atheist (well duh), and willing to learn the language and/or skii? Come right on over.
[–]bronsonbaker 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I'm in college right now, I am an atheist, and I think Old Norse (I don't know what you guys speak NOW) is beautiful. See you in a few years.
[–]pinkemma 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Look me up when you come over. Just ask around for Emma :)
[–]bronsonbaker 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
What DO you guys speak now?
You can choose between Bokmål and Nynorsk, though both are classed as written languages only. Everyone speaks a dialect of some sorts.
Nynorsk is what's closest to the original roots of the language and norse, bokmål is a bastardization of Norwegian and Danish. Under 10% write Nynorsk, and most speak horrible, horrible dialects. I grew up in the middle of where Nynorsk was once formalized, so I'm allowed to say this :)
Where would you point me to learn these languages?
[–]KillaPeas 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
Norway.
[–]math792d 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Norway's a great country if you like really expensive oil.
No, I'm not mad because I live in Denmark and carry an inherent inferiority complex towards Norway, or because my country is ruled by racist dingbats.
I'm just kind of jealous.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
imo the best way to learn a language is to move to the place, but you can always prepare by taking some online courses/listening to internet radio/watching movies with subtitles.
I have a friend that moved to oslo, and after 1 year or so she could speak decent norwegian.
[–]pinkemma 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
You can try my local university, http://www.ntnu.edu/now/intro
Pimsleur have norwegian audio courses
We have also speak English really well, mostly, so you can always learn after you get into the country.
My artificial intelligence teacher had lived in Norway for almost a decade, had a wife and 2 children. And his vocabulary wasn't much bigger than "Student", "Unnskyld meg", "Kan du snakke Engelsk", and "Faen!". Though he had just started a course when I studied :)
[–]Kogledk 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I giggled imagining a sign out there saying "Welcome to Hell!"
[–]Areion 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Apparently it's very popular for tourists/foreign students/etc to buy a two way ticket to Hell when they are visiting this part of the country.
I believe that sign actually exist, and is often stolen by tourists.
[–]nowisee 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
fixed the link for you HELL - GODS EXPEDITION
Edit: Wikipedia article
I have known about Hell for a long time now, and I still lol'd at that. Have an upvote!
[–]liw 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
As it happens, they do speak Norwegian in Hell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Norway. I don't know if they prefer bokmål or nynorsk, or both.
[–]calibwam 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
As nobody in Norway speaks either bokmål or nynorsk, they don't in Hell either. The writing is in bokmål, and the people there speak with trøndersk dialect.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
I am Norwegian and I liked this. I am also an atheist, which I just remembered would be relevant.
I can't speak for any other countries as I have never lived anywhere else, but I've never faced discrimination or judgement (That I've noticed anyway) for being an Atheist, something I am very forthcoming with. My brother is a believing christian and despite our religious differences never really get into serious fights about it. I'll let him keep his misguided beliefs without any basis in fact...Because I'm a nice guy like that.
[–]nilum 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Norway... will you please invade America? I know it sort of goes against what you believe in, but we could really use some help.
[–]Technologenesis 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Well, that was a nice read.
Anyway if you guys need me, I'll be in fucking Norway.
[–]Panda_paddle 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Hmmmm so how hard is Norwegian to learn for an English speaker? Also how hard is it to get a work visa.
[–]Areion 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I wouldn't know about the work visa, but norwegian is a fairly easy language to learn if you are an english speaker. It has very simple grammar, and a vocabulary that is so similar to english it's almost scary. Add on the fact that we steal english words for a lot of things and you should be able to learn it in no time. Don't expect that you'll ever be able to sound like a norwegian tho. I've met tons of english speakers who have learned norwegian and they all have a heavy english accent they just can't get rid of.
[–]goodwolf 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
It might just be the easiest language for English speakers to learn. I've just taken it up and I've found myself amazed by the fact that grammar in the two languages is virtually the same.
The most trouble you'll have is learning to make whole new noises with your mouth you never thought possible.
[–]nowisee 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
Most people in Norway don't mind if you speak a mix of Norwegian and English. English is our second language, so almost everyone is fluent. I work with some people that have immigrated from UK/US and they seem to manage well.
Even so I would recommend you start learning basic Norwegian since that would help you land a job, and is also a great help to you in everyday life situations.
In regards to the work visa i don't have a good answer, but you could try the nearest Norwegian embassy or check out Norwegian Directorate of Immigration
[–]math792d 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Just be glad you don't have to learn Danish. Danish is up there with every language in the cyrilic and Chinese alphabet on the list of "hardest languages to learn in the world." The Norwegians got the long end of the stick there.
[–]trixter21992251 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago

THEY GOT RICH FROM OIL!!!!1!
and very good management of those ressources.
[–]kidl33t 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I considered making this comic during the whole Tebow thing. As a western Norwegian (Canadian, arctic brothers!) I've always wondered why the worlds most atheistic country had the highest standard of living. Ohh wait, it's because you put real human needs in front of religious BS. Carry on!
[–]Wolftongue 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Of course they speak Norwegian in Hell.

[–]bronsonbaker 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Are we referring to Norweigen black death metal?
Fact. Black Metal os norway's largest cultural export.
[–]Automaticwriting 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
What is black death metal exactly and what's the difference between that and old metal bands I listened to as a kid in the 80's like slayer, kreator, etc? Sorry, I'm old.
[–]Kill3rKin3 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Well its complicated, Black metal is sort of a counter push, to death because deathmetal became what some pepole precived as glossy, black metal and death metal is not the same, and should not be mixed. If you are a metal head from the 80`s this might help.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1CxRvICzpQ
[–]peacockskeleton 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Black metal is far more gritty than death metal. The best examples i can give you are Darkthrone or immortal for black metal. For death metal i'm not sure, but i think cannibal corpse, dimmu borgir and Behemoth fall under death metal.
slayer and kreator are thrash metal. The vocals are more scream oriented, not so much growling etc.
Interesting. Back in the day we just called it heavy metal and everything else on headbangers ball was butt rock or shit, depending if our parents were in the room.
Heavy metal is the common demoniator. Thrash metal, black metal, death metal, stoner metal, speed metal, viking metal, groove metal and progressive metal are all parts of the heavy metal scene.
Heavy metal started out with black sabbath and, like a language, started evolving.
[–]UnholyDemigod -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
Norwegian black metal is usually Satan orientated. Mayhem is the most infamous, being involved in church burnings and stuff. One band member murdered another, one committed suicide, and when discovered by the other band members, they took a photo and used it as the cover art for their next album
[–]Zalitara 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Varg Vikernes who killed that guy is out again btw. Walking among the rest of us.
[–]haifischsandiwch 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Kings of Convenience and Röyksopp are the only two I know.
[–]qshoe1 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I'm a third Norwegian!
[–]Lowbacca1977 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Who were the first two?
[–]brikkwall 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I'm assuming you're american, because of that comment.
What is the deal with americans that absolutely love to say that they are either 1/16 norwegian or that a friend's friend is 1/32 norwegian?
I've been to the states twice and had that conversation at least once every day during my stays. Just..why?
Swedish and Norwegian is pretty similar, so i'll be ok when it comes to the social aspect. Then again.. What language does satan speak? Probably Norwegian. I hear he's ginger.
[–]RasputinSkoro 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Yeah, moving there when I get the chance .. Denmark be in shitty state man..
[–]MikeTheManipulator 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I've searched for the reports to back this comic up but I haven't found them. Could someone point me in the right direction?
[–]Wozzle90 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I don't want to diminish the many (and there are) societal achievements of Norway, but keep in mind less than 5 million people live there. The smaller the population the easier it is to govern and get things done.
Still, don't change what you're doing, Norway! I'm still impressed!
[–]martincake 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
The smaller the population the easier it is to govern and get things done.
You've clearly never met the Norwegian government.
[–]Zalitara 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Indeed, getting things done is not one of our strongest sides. Hard to get things done when you don't wake up early for church, and sleep in instead.
[–]GiPwner 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Doesn't it bother anyone that the same things get posted and posted again, yet people still up-vote the crap out of it?
[–]black34v6 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Everytime I speak up in class I always get people upset with me - it's not my fault that the facts disprove the teacher, or that I just happen to retain obscure shit like that...
It really isn't...
TL;DR: my first name is Russell and this shit is the story of my life.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
The only thing I get from this is that high average wage is seen as something admirable. They also have some of the most expensive living conditions in the world.
And the GDP is because of the oil and natural gas deposits they struck while they were mainly christian.
Edit: Not to say that it isn't a good country to be in, but the reason for that is hardly due to their recent atheism. And the main point of atheism not ruining countries still stands.
[–]surells 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
My name is Russell (anagram)
[–]metarzan 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I've never met someone in Norway who openly says they're religious. I've never had a discussion with a believer. I rarely see people with a cross around their neck. Politicians never mention personal religion in official statements.
I could go on and on...
I love Norway.
[–]Zalitara 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I live in the bible belt in Norway, and while I don't have statistics the people my age (20 in a month) seems to favor atheism heavily. But I do see people with a cross around their neck, and many that are openly religious. They just don't push it around, they are religious and that's enough for them. I have several friends who are deeply religious and I have never been bothered by them trying to convert me. And this is the bible belt remember, the "equvialent" of Americas texas and so on...
[–]Ruste 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
My name is Russell. I never see it spelled that way.
[–]harabanaz 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
As a Norwegian myself I would like to add this: http://qkme.me/35ja16 . There was a shortage of butter in the country before Christmas, and a bit of yapping about it on the news and some giggling from our neighbours. Oh well. Happy the people who have only such problems to bitch and moan about. :-) --- and perhaps it took our minds off the Breivik massacre somewhat.

Hey! We are still considered christians at birth, according to the state's statistics. Only those who give a **** make the effort of actually signing out of the state church.
Same thing in sweden? If so I take a bow and congratulate =)

The only problem with Norway is that they aren't a republic, they have a royal family. A monarchy is an archaic governmental system if ever I saw one, even if it doesn't have any power.
What difference does it make? It's a very, very small problem really...
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
That'd be Finland. Nice try though.
[–]AquelecaraDEpoa 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Source?
Same here, I have been considering it just to make a statement, but really there's no point to it. I am atheist, any letters from the church simply go directly in the garbage.
[–]goodwolf 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Do religious groups in Norway care that most Norwegians have no place for religion in their lives? Are they scared?
They get state funding for each "believer" they've got on paper. They're happy enough that the money is running in and they can show a good stat on how many are "following" them.
It sounds a bit catholic-churchy.
If you're Irish, the question is "Catholic or Protestant?" "Atheist." "Catholic or protestant atheist?"
Once you're a member you can't get out, I'm told.
People are too lazy to leave. A lot also stay so they can have a church wedding with their beloved later. My uncle didn't stay for that, he was refused by his first love (I want a church marriage, join or I leave), my brother stayed so he could marry the woman of his dreams. (Though when he found the woman, they had a state wedding anyway ;) )
I guess Scandinavian loss of religion has been a lot more gradual then. In Australasia secularists don't like the Church because the church still has too much impact on politics, schooling and such.
We have growing numbers of humanist organisations serving the community competing with Churches. I think it would bother me living in a country with lots of faux-christians.
It's not a hassle! It's one form that needs to be mailed in.
Please help fight the state church!
Your not helping secularizing Norway :(
It really is time the state church gets to feel the burn. Imagine if we could make the poll numbers reality, less than 20% in the state church!
Thank you :) I'll remind you June 30th, ok? ;)
[–]Noxire 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
It's the same in Sweden, most are members of the church regardless of beliefs.
Fewer than 20% is believing in a deity.
