Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

No, but if I produced a piece of art I thought Reddit Gaming would like I'd post it. The comments were separate. The first being interrogative of the work's origin. (A euphemism at that. I was mostly sure it wasn't the OP, but was hoping for a direction toward the actual author.) The second statement was in light of the fact that the work is based on a character from our collective childhood, but the theme of it is very adult and good for reflection.

This image has been posted numerous times on /r/gaming which is why I asked if it were your first day. It was to imply this would be the only way you missed seeing the thread before.

Also, I don't really find the image to be "very adult and good for reflection." I would probably be able to enjoy it if Mario were just old, and reminiscing about the good times. But this image depicts Mario, a character who is renowned the world over for his ability to jump, with no legs.

I don't think that is very adult at all. Honestly, the picture nauseates me when I see it. Sure there is a lot of emotion you can draw from the depiction of him in this state. It reminds us that Mario was just a man like us, and even heroes will age and die. I just think cutting off his legs was a bit too far. It's just a little too dark for me to appreciate it the same way you and others do.

Oh, I've been on Reddit maybe a couple months and I hadn't seen this one yet.

What I meant by that statement is that it's not a basic shot of Mario, the way the box-art from one of the games might be - though those are art in themselves I'm sure. It basically takes a character that lacks any serious background - and therefore the audience that lacks any emotional involvement in him - and completely swaps that around.

It's kind of like if you've seen that original Batman TV show. I'm only 27, so I don't really remember watching it as a kid, but I did see it a few times; if I remember correctly, Batman was originally seen as a kind of joke or a parody, but today he's probably one of the most emotionally investing characters from a comic universe. This is something similar, especially since I played Mario games so early in life (like most people have) and never thought about him in this way. Seeing him in a wheelchair with no legs (as you brought up, he's known for his ability to jump) being aided by his brother (who is at best a side-character) with all those 'aged' memories on his wall is a huge change of context.

I basically think of it the other way: this reminds us that WE are aging and will deal with loss. I also think there is an added element (ironically) of the lack of Princess Peach, so either she's dead, or doesn't love him, or maybe he couldn't save her in the end. I also don't think it deals with the death of a hero as much as the 'non-hero-ness' if that makes sense; it deals with him in his humanity, which is an issue that has never really been explored in the games...because the back story is basically nonsensical and meant for children. Because of this, I'd think that most people who view this also project their own ideas of loss onto it - I think I did when I saw it anyway.

At any rate, I like it a lot. I'd certainly pay for a reproduction of it.
