I have a Zune HD and aside from the total lack of apps I much prefer it to the iPod Touch which my sister has. Once again, the total lack of apps... That's all I regret. Just to be absolutely clear, Zune is better, except for the number of apps, and quali- You know what, by know the karma's already gone, i'm just gonna go cry. ಥ_ಥ

I know its not the exact same but i love the zune player on my WP7 phone! Coming from an iPod touch as my main music player.

[–]shadowdude777 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Zune HD was absolutely fucking amazing. It had the best sound quality of any PMP besides the Cowon ones, but it was:

  • Much better built than the Cowon players
  • Much sexier than the Cowon players
  • Had more apps than the Cowon players (as you said, about seven more than the Cowon players... for a total of seven)

[–]phantasmagorical 8 points9 points ago

I love my Zune HD, too! The UI, dark background, wireless syncing... it's amazing!

[–]P1_Press_Start 1 point2 points ago

Well, to be fair it isn't like an mp3 player needs apps to be good. All that should matter is mp3 aspect. Battery life, sound quality, UI, etc.

Meh, apps are for smart phones. And, lets be honest, audiosurf tilt is the only app you need on your zune.

[–]Senor_Wilson 130 points131 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There were reports before he died that he was anonymously giving a lot of money to cancer research and such. Not as much as Bill Gates, but he wasn't worth as much as Bill Gates.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ARE YOU SAYING THAT EVERYTHING ISN'T BLACK AND WHITE AND ONE CAN'T SUM UP THE CONTENT OF SOMEONES CHARACTER IN ONE SENTENCE?

That's crazy talk.

[–]junkmale 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've read before how he funneled his money through his wife to charity and just kept it anonymous. He isn't the greedy bastard this thread wants him to be. BUT, I have read numerous accounts that he was a dictator/asshole boss, which I can actually understand. He had an awesome vision and was shut down a couple of times.

On the other hand, I think it is great for Gates, Branson, and other moguls to "advertise" their charities. We love to hate on the 1%, but at the end of the day I think they do more for society on an efficiency level than any government could.

[–]branwall 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That last paragraph is so true. Sure, there may be a lot of rich assholes, but I think the "1%" is actually a rather capable and misrepresented group of people.

Does anybody still remember that bill gates bailed apple out?

[–]keath 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another consideration is that Steve Jobs was not a billionaire for as long as Gates.

When Jobs was kicked out of Apple, he was worth about $100 million. He could have retired, but founded Next, and later purchased Pixar with his own money.

Neither turned a profit for years. He kept them going with his own cash, and was reportedly down to about $40 million when Next was bought by Pixar. (as reported on CNBC Titans

Yes, ultimately, both companies succeeded wildly; about the same time he was diagnosed with cancer.

We kind of make fun of the idea of the "job creators", but it's certainly true of Steve Jobs.

The hate is misplaced, and sadly probably only related to some individuals' allegiance to competing products.

[–]earlyretirement 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where are these reports?

[–]katamarimasu 24 points25 points ago

[–]duiker101 15 points16 points ago

Completely uncorroborated reports.

[–]chillinatthecomp 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe because he himself was diagnosed with cancer? Seems pretty selfish to be totally honest.

[–]rogersmith25 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In that case, do you think that people with debilitating diseases secretly hope that billionaires contract the disease so that more money goes into researching their particular affliction?

Too bad billionaires so rarely suffer from famine or unclean water. Good for Gates giving for the sake of giving!

[–]joetoc 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I donno. If I was dying of cancer I would probably give ALL my money to research.

[–]renholder 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It probably wouldn't do much for you though. Research takes a long time, so if you just wanted to survive, it would be smarter to get lots of doctors and what not to utilize the technology we already have.

If you just want to ensure that others won't suffer through what you did, then donating to research would be a very admirable thing to do, in my opinion.

[–]Senor_Wilson 101 points102 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if it was for selfish reasons it still benefits others. So I don't really care.

Every one does things for their own benefit. It's human nature

[–]Incoherentrant 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah in fact I would say a large portion of people who donate to causes are trying to resolve something for themselves/that is happening to them/happened to them. For example, kid dies in alcohol related crash, mom signs up to fight teens access to alcohol. Mom dies of/diagnosed with breast cancer, children make breast cancer fund to collect money to cure it.

It's just how people work. Although I don't know why he would have had to keep it secret...

[–]Errday_Im_Hylian 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He told his biographer that Gates would only be remembered for his philanthropic efforts because he felt Gates "stole" the Mac interface, and wasn't as innovative as Apple.

Jobs hardly knew how to program his own computers, and let us not forget what Apple did to IBM. Relevant Jobs interview. He was a great salesman, but Gates was a good everything-else.

Gates was not always this benevolent either. If you were 20 or older during the mid 90s, you would remember that Gates ruthlessly and quite illegally screwed over millions of people. He committed some acts that were waaay more evil than what Jobs has ever done.

I'm happy he's trying to redeem some of the evil he committed and I hope it will bring him peace.

[–]HaveaManhattan 10 points11 points ago

Correct, it was his wife that convinced him to start donating significantly.

Who? Netscape employees? Let's face it, IE was superior to Netscape because Netscape's management was utterly clueless regarding the direction of web browsers. For fuck's sake, they were trying to sell Navigator! And it was an utter POS. (Netscape user here from 1995 until 2001.)

He committed some acts that were waaay more evil than what Jobs has ever done.

Fuck Jobs. Most over-rated nerd of all time.

[–]New_Wav 121 points122 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally I think Steve Jobs did a lot of good. He inspired a lot of people to make some cool things and pushed the market in some cool directions. At the same time many of his products had bases in older technology he didn't create and yet he still took and got credit for creating the product. He also had a very strong affliction to open source anything which is not something I personally agree with.

I think Jobs did some good for the tech world but took credit and is given way more credit than he deserves for somethings he improved but didn't invent and that is what bugs me. I mean hell I've heard people go as far as to credit him with the creation of the touch screen for mobile devices.

[–]erated 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some people who say "Fuck Steve Jobs" do not argue with what you are saying. In fact, the reasoning behind it has nothing to do with technology. They, like me, are just pointing out that he was a total jerk.

[–]bradsh 42 points43 points ago

The reason for the hate is that we all know it's a shit legacy. When you die, would you like to be known for your fucking products? Or for the incredible good you did through the charity you built? The neat gadgets you created? Or the lives you saved, the diseases you fought?

You don't hear people talking about Gates' legacy at Microsoft, and when he dies, Microsoft will practically be a blip in his obituary. No one cares.

People are talking about Jobs' gadgets because there is nothing else to talk about. He was a selfish dick who made stuff people liked and a bunch of money. The end. Gates made a bunch of money... and that does not seem to be his end game, or his final purpose.

I don't particularly care for Steve Jobs or Bill Gates myself, but in response to your question: it depends. You can live your life however you like and value anything you please, but there is certainly no definite "good or bad", "right or wrong" way to spend your existence. Jobs spent his time making products, something he loved to do, and Gates likes business and to give his money to charity. I see nothing wrong with either path.

Life's not a pissing contest.

[–]dancon25 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You win. All I see in this thread are people bashing the shit out of Jobs for doing what he loved. I'm glad at least someone here recognizes that what he did was good in and of itself, and shouldn't be judged based on others' values.

[–]torbar203 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Just because you don't donate to charity doesn't make you a bad person. Yes, he did some dickish things in the past, such as refused to admit that his daughter was his daughter, but he made up for it.

[–]zebrawaterfall 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So in your opinion Gates has led a better life? Who is really to decide? Jobs left his mark in a different way. Maybe Jobs wanted his legacy to be Apple and his products? Life isn't as one sided as you make it.

Apple did buy out a lot of patents on that. Plus, they did get some very abstract patents on multi touch input. If it all held up legally.. I'm sure that they have enough to take credit as the creators and sole owners of multitouch displays.

Regardless of your view on his products - he pushed the envelope and inspired other companies to do so as well (to compete for customers, of course) I personally don't like Apple products, but i certainly respect what Steve Jobs brought to the industry

Are people not allowed to donate money to research a disease they personally have? I'll have to take note of that.

It may not be the most selfless thing in the world, but research takes years. Whether he wanted to or not, his money will help more people in the future than it helped him.

This is loathsome. Crowing over someone's death because he had the audacity to keep the money he earned? You people ought to reappraise what you consider righteous, because you're not living up to any proper standard.

Thank you. I don't really know much about Steve Jobs, and I don't own any Apple products besides my old iPod Nano (you know, the fat, sexy chode one), but that was his money. He's entitled to do whatever he wants with it.

I'm all for praising philanthropists, but demonizing people who want to hold on to their hard-earned money rubs me the wrong way. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting your family and their children (and so on) to be the direct beneficiary of your wealth.

If I was ballin'-outta-control rich, I'd honestly probably buy my friends and family a lot of gifts first. I mean, they're my "loved ones" for a reason, you know?

I have problems with this for two reasons:

1) It's his money. If he wanted to bathe in a tub of gold doubloons every day, then whatever. An American making $25,000 a year still makes over 10x as much as the average South African. And how many of you can honestly say you've donated proportionally as much as you expected Steve Jobs to donate?

2) We don't know how much he actually donated. I'm not saying he did this, but I have a lot of respect for anonymous donors because it's truer altruism - you get absolutely nothing in return, not even recognition (unless outwardly informing people of your donations is guaranteed to ensure more donations).

I'm not supporting anything about either of these two, but I would like to point out that how charitable they are has absolutely no reflection upon the quality of their products. You would need a hell of a lot more data to draw any kind of actual correlation.

Additionally, I think it's funny that Steve Jobs was a self-proclaimed "Buddhist," while Bill Gates is "openly" atheist.

Lol I haven't met one Apple employee who denies Jobb's was an asshole. But that's not why we loved him. We loved him because he had the uncanny ability to see the future before us and create products in relation to that vision. I guess the price for his level of perfectionism was that he was an asshole and he didn't get along with others causing stress which leads to cancer.

[–]jellohead 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just want to point out that Steve Jobs gave away and is still giving away all of his money. The one genuine conversation I had with Steve Jobs was about giving, he essentially quoted the Bible saying that giving should be in secret, otherwise something about the joy being taken away ( I didn't understand it).

He also mentioned that wealthy people need to be very careful about giving away to charity organizations because if you give large enough sums, you influence governments and when that happens "bad" people get involved diverting you money to change other countries politics

I'm sorry, does everybody forget the thousands of jobs that Steve Jobs created, or the unbelievable multitude of ways that our lives were enriched by his products? If he had quit to do philanthropy when he had the out we wouldnt have the iphone, the ipad, or even the ipod. Apple fired him, and he could have left to "help the world" but no he kept working and gave us an even greater gift. If you want to help the world, be productive. A rising tide lifts all boats.

And I don't understand why some of you think when anybody dies of cancer, it is acceptable to make fun of them (not talking specifically about the post, more so some of the comments). No, i'm not an apple fanboy, and I know I'll probably get downvoted into oblivion for this whole comment, but I wanted to speak my mind.

[–]LazyAardvark 1 point2 points ago

quick thing i dont think Jobs was very responsible for growth in the computing technology field. i think what he influenced was the inclusion of technology in popular culture and that what he really did was influence computers in the business aspect.

and i agree people should make fun of the dead

I noticed in this thread that the reasoning for Steve Jobs philanthropy is very similar to the reasoning for Creationism.

"But you don't KNOW that Steve didn't donate money, so how can you be sure? I am right!"

"But you don't KNOW that God didn't create the Earth, so how can you be sure? I am right!"

[–]Sydin 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't read Jobs' biography, but I heard he didn't think very highly of Gates. I found this with a quick google search. Doesn't really sound like really good friends that admired each others work.

"Bill is basically unimaginative and has never invented anything, which is why I think he's more comfortable now in philanthropy than technology. He just shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas."

To be fair, Bill Gates was also paid over 2 billion a year, while Steve jobs was only paid 1 dollar per year plus stock. He kept stock so he would make better decisions for the company if he wanted to make any money of his own.

Good guy Jobs, gives himself only stock to ensure he has the company's best interest in mind.

Scumbag Gates pays himself billions.

I don't care of this gets down voted, it's still the truth. Just because he was Bill Gates doesn't give him any more right get paid so much just like any other CEO that gets paid millions or billions.

[–]Arx0s 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In all fairness, Bill Gates got a lot more money from a company worth a lot less than Apple. Steve Jobs was worth only about $8.3 billion, while Bill Gates is worth over $56 billion. Plus, who knows how many charities Steve Jobs donated to privately.

I'll get downvoted to hell on this, but Gates donates to Monsanto, which in turn creates GMO that's been documented to cause all sorts of health problems in animals and possibly humans. Monsanto also has a plan to kill all bees and replace them with their own super bees. Monsanto also lines the pockets of ambassadors as politicians to further their agenda of controlling the world's food supply.

I'd rather Jobs hoard his money than fund a company that is slowly destroying the world's food supply using money influenced politics.
